I hope you all had a wonderful day yesterday. I am looking forward to visiting and seeing all your photos.
A short post here, mostly relaxing and putting our feet up. These are a few leftover cookies we bought from a bakery a few days ago. I will be sharing photos from our Christmas Day and the visit to the bakery over the next few days.
The day after Christmas is Boxing Day where I grew up. There are several stories of how it came to be, but one story I was told was that it dates back to the Victorian era when neighbors came together to fill individual boxes with generous donations, so that people who were experiencing poverty could knock on their doors and receive one of these boxes. I believe Boxing Day originated in Great Britain but is also celebrated in several Commonwealth countries. Our Canadian, Australian and New Zealand friends, and elsewhere, might be able to tell us more.
My memories are that my parents invited family and friends over and Mother fixed a tea with all the leftover food from the day before, sandwiches and cake, that kind of thing.
Thanks for stopping by and Happy Boxing Day!
We certainly celebrate Boxing Day here. It is perhaps our biggest sale of the year - despite being a public holiday for many. I much prefer it as a day to remember the less fortunate, and had certainly heard that story of its origins.
ReplyDeleteThank you Sue, I’m with you :)
DeleteThank you for the explanation of boxing Day! Put your feet up and have a cookie. Aloha!
ReplyDeleteYou are very welcome and thank you. Aloha :)
DeleteWhat pretty cookies those are. I have always heard about boxing day but never knew much about it. I guess it was just one of those days that I didn't get to celebrate so I didn't think about it. The story I seem to remember hearing was that people traded jobs at work. I like your story better.
ReplyDeleteThey were delicious too :) that’s an interesting explanation. Thanks Ann!
DeleteThe cookies look so festive and pretty. I hope you and your family had a lovely Christmas. I wish you all the best in 2024, a very Happy and Healthy New Year! Take care, have a wonderful week!
ReplyDeleteWe did, Eileen and I hope the same for you :) Thank you Eileen, and I wish you the same:)
DeleteAh, what Christmas would be complete without a Stormtrooper? 😂
ReplyDeleteThanks for the smile Sandi, we do have Star Wars fans in our midst and it was a small gift to them. We also decided it was Luke Skywalker rescuing Princess Leia, an homage to all our first responders keeping us safe instead of being home with their families on Christmas Day, and that’s where my brain wanders :)
DeleteI have also heard it called St. Stephen's day for probably just about the same reason.
ReplyDeleteLovely, thank you for the explanation :)
DeleteI had never heard of boxing day until I started blogging and found friends all over the world and all the countries you mentioned and I became more aware of it. It sounds like the original boxing day was the one that we should have stuck with I like that idea a lot
ReplyDeleteMe too Sandra :) and we still follow it.
DeleteGrowing up I always thought Boxing Day was all about the sport. It wasn't until my late teens until I finally figured it out.
ReplyDeleteI can definitely understand that, it would be an automatic assumption :)
DeleteThere are many good stories about the origin of Boxing Day. They were all positive.
ReplyDeleteGood to know, thanks Red :)
DeleteHappy Boxing Day!
ReplyDeleteThank you Christine, you too :)
