BIRDS FOUND IN THE EVERGLADES - FROM MY ARCHIVES

These are an archive continuation from our trip to the Everglades in January 2014.  One of the many reasons I enjoy Florida is because of the abundance of birdlife.  You can get up relatively close to them, especially when we were in the Everglades.

Wood Stork above and the Great Blue Heron below.

Next shows you the extraordinary pattern of feathers on the Anhinga.

Another perched on an old tree branch...

and one taking off across the water.

The Green Heron I shared recently.

The following extraordinary-looking bird is a Purple Gallinule.  Look at those feet?  Its long toes help it to walk on floating vegetation like lilypads.

Next is a Tri-colored Heron.

and also a Great Blue Heron (link in my second photo). He had just caught his lunch. Further away and photo is a little blurry.

I made a collage of heads and already identified above, except for the Double-crested Cormorant top right.

That's all for today.
Thanks for looking and
enjoy your Friday!

  1. These are all beautiful! I have never seen an Anhinga looking like this! The black & white colors are so intense, and I never even noticed they have this feather pattern!! I am thinking this must be a male in breeding season. The Wood Stork's beak does kind of look wooden!

    1. The blue around the eye does mean it is a male Anhinga, the blue becomes more vibrant in breeding season. Well, I didn't connect the dots but that beak does look like it is made of wood. Thanks Ginny :)

  4. There is no question that Florida is an attractive destination for birders, although it seems like the whole state is being paved over.

    1. It is but oh my gosh, I do hope they don't pave everything over! I'm thankful for the nature reserves and parks that prevent it and there seem to be many. Thanks for your input David, food for thought.

  7. Oh Denise! What splendid captures of these wonderful large birds. The Purple Gallinule's feathers have beautiful colours, and the feathers of the Anhinga's are very attractive. I also like what you did with the collage. A fine collection from your archives which I enjoyed very much.

Wood Storks she says. hummmm says I... I do love them. we see white ibis on a daily basis in our neighborhood, the others we must go to where they live
