I haven't seen any deer in quite a while. These are old photos from my archives.
We were at Big Meadows on Skyline Drive, and I was looking to take photos of wildflowers. I came across her in a secluded thicket.
We saw each other at the same time. (I am not as close as it looks as I had my camera with a zoom lens.)
My day was made! I had not thought I would see such a sweet animal, it was so unexpected. I held my breath thinking she would take flight but no, her ears twitched a little and happily she didn't make a move. I quickly snapped these photos at the same time backing out ever so slowly, with my very special gift of the day, not just for the photos but for the very sight of her. About an hour later on the other side of the meadow I came across another much younger one, a fawn. She still had a few spots. I wasn't looking for either and yet there they were.
These old photos brought back a very special day.
One deer was exciting but two? Magical! So no, I haven't seen any deer for quite a while on our trips out, but I'm glad I have these to remind me of what a very special day that was. Maybe I should stop looking so hard for them, maybe they will just appear like that day at Big Meadows.
Thanks for looking and
I hope your day is a great one!
We have a lot of deer here, many are dead on the side of the road. So I have quite a few photos of them. But I have never seen or snapped one laying down!!!
ReplyDeleteThat’s always sad! We used to get them in our neighborhood but I haven’t seen any here in years.
DeleteBeautiful, beautiful, beautiful. A day to remember forever.
ReplyDeleteVery much so and thank you :)
DeleteThe only time we see deer is when we visit a big country estate where they can run freely in the parkland areas. It must have been thrilling to see deer and their young ones on that day. They look relaxed and I'm glad you were able to take photos.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much. I have seen photos of the deer on these country estates you mention. Wonderful!
DeleteThese are beautiful. We don't get to see them down here though there are plenty on several farms I believe.
ReplyDeleteThey were, very much so :) If you ever get to see any on those farms on one of your trips, I would love to see them :)
DeleteIt's always a thrill to see wild animals and deer are so special. Lovely photographs.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, it certainly is :)
DeleteSaw about a dozen of them the other day in a local woodland.
ReplyDeleteThat’s great to see that many :)
DeleteClose encounters with nature like this are treasures. The only time I've ever seen a deer is when I've been driving and they were running out in front of me. Naturally I've not been able to take pictures of them.
ReplyDeleteVery much so :) Scary when that happens.
DeleteA beautiful deer, they are so sweet. I always enjoy seeing the deer, we have seen them many times at Shenandoah, some very close up too. Take care, have a wonderful day!
ReplyDeleteVery much so :) I haven’t been able to walk across the meadow for a while. I used to see a lot of them there. Thank you and I wish you the same.
DeleteWhat a gift Denise! Two sweet creatures in the same day is amazing. That was the way I felt the day I saw wild turkeys resting. Nature is amazing.
ReplyDeleteMost definitely and always a gift :) I don’t get to see wild turkeys walking or resting. I would have been thrilled to see them like you did. I agree, nature truly is amazing!
DeleteThe deer is looking so cute
ReplyDeleteTotally agree :)
DeleteThe eyes of the deer are just beautiful! You photographed animals very well, Denise.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much and I agree, they have the most beautiful eyes :)
DeleteGlad you got to take the shot. And see two. Most excellent.
ReplyDeleteMost excellent indeed :)
Delete❤️
DeleteI have never had one appear in the wild. of course I don't go in the wild where they live so why would I . this is indeed magical
ReplyDeleteWe don’t get there often these days and on our recent trip didn’t see any. Still, I have these photos :)
DeleteDeer are just so graceful land lovely.
ReplyDeleteCouldn’t agree more :)
DeleteI love seeing deer out in the wild. They seem to appear in the most unlikely places.
ReplyDeleteAgree on both counts, thanks Yogi :)
DeleteGorgeous shots
ReplyDeleteThank you so much :)
DeleteWe pass far more deer than we see. However , they are a beautiful animal. They go across my yard most nights.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt you are right :) I hope you don’t have any tulips in your garden :)
DeleteIt is always fun to a point when the deer reappear. We are beginning to see them again here. I have to shoo them away when they start nibbling on the clematis!! :)
ReplyDeleteI did not know they liked clematis too :)
DeleteOh I totallly agree seeing one deer was amazing but TWO definitely magical. What goregous eyes she has too.
ReplyDeleteMany years ago we took our early morning walk on the trail around the NC Art Museum. Once we came upon a Mom and Fawn snacking on wildflowers. Mom looked as us but must have decided we were not a threat. After a minute or so they moved back into the groove of trees. DEFINITELY MAGICAL
Hugs Cecilia
They say the eyes are the windows to the soul. I can well believe it with these deer. Thank you for sharing the memory of your walk and seeing the Mom and Fawn. You had your own magical experience :)
DeleteOh, aren't they beautiful animals. We moved to this house two years ago and shortly afterwards saw a deer in one of the fields which runs alongside the lane at the top of our street. We've seen them a few times since. It's always magical when we see them.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds wonderful! I would love to have fields that are as close as yours. We don't have to drive too far though and I am always looking out for them :)
Deleteooooh how wonderful, i love them as well!! depending on where they are they seem to be pretty tame. a friend just sent me a video of some, at a soccer field, where her son was practicing. had to be at least 12 and they could have cared less that all the people were there. it is raining today but on the next sunny day i am going to go!!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see your photos! How extraordinary that they don't mind all those people around. Here's hoping you get your sunny day soon :)
DeleteNext time you pass through South Dakota, let me know, I'll set you up to see dozens of deer up close and personal!
ReplyDeleteI will remember that, thank you so much! I look forward to the day :)
DeleteYears ago, while on Skyline Drive a deer joined us for our picnic lunch. Almost literally. We though it was "so cool" that we were almost offering our peanut butter and jelly sandwiches - then I remembered, "hey this wildlife, etc etc" and I quickly got the children out of the way. The deer are so tame in the park!!
ReplyDeleteGood for you Jennifer, it is always so tempting to feed them but we are not doing them any kindness, even if it seems we are. They are habituated to humans enough and it’s best to keep them wild, and their natural food is so much healthier for them. Hopefully the park people keep an eye on them in wintertime. They are a joy to see :) what a lovely experience you all had.
DeleteWhat a wonderful encounter, Denise! Your photos are enchanting and bring the magic of that day to life. Nature has a way of surprising us when we least expect it. Thanks for sharing this special moment!
ReplyDeleteHugs and blessings
Thank you kindly Veronica Lee :) and you are very welcome! Very true, nature surprises me all the time. Hugs and blessings to you also.
DeleteDeer are so lovely in the spring.
ReplyDeleteThey surely are, thank you Susan :)
DeleteHello Denise. Beautiful photos, you were very lucky. When one meets such animals one feels awe of nature. It reminded me of a fairy tale I had written at Christmas and lived it so vividly.. I am leaving the link because I think you would like to read it https://peripetiazois.blogspot.com/2023/12/
ReplyDeleteHave a nice day🌷🧡!
Thank you Katerina and thank you also for the link. I will enjoy reading your fairy tale :) You have a nice day also, with lots of sunshine ☀️🌷💛
DeleteGreat photos.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Sandra :)
DeleteBig Meadows is a great place to see deer. I also see them often at Dickey Ridge, but there it is mostly in the late afternoon.
ReplyDeleteI do think we were there at the wrong time of day. Maybe next time :)
DeleteA double thrill. Wonderful pictures of the deer.
ReplyDeleteThank you Beverley, it certainly was :)
