“John Boynton Priestley (13 September 1894 – 14 August 1984) was an English novelist, playwright, screenwriter, broadcaster and social commentator.
His Yorkshire background is reflected in much of his fiction, notably in The Good Companions (1929), which first brought him to wide public notice. Many of his plays are structured around a time slip, and he went on to develop a new theory of time, with different dimensions that link past, present and future.
In 1940 he broadcast a series of short propagandaradio talks, which were credited with strengthening civilian morale during the Battle of Britain. In the following years his left-wing beliefs brought him into conflict with the government and influenced the development of the welfare state.”

DeleteA simple quote but so true! I always thought that it was quite magical to wake up to a new world, when it snowed heavily overnight. We don’t get to experience that very often where I live but I do remember the very harsh winter of 1962/1963!
ReplyDeleteJ.B. Priestley was an interesting man and his writing certainly brought much discussion. I taught, ‘An Inspector Calls’ for many years, for GCSE..a brilliant book that raised many questions as well as telling us much about the struggles of the working class, prior to WW1. I really enjoyed teaching this play. ‘Time and the Conways’ is another good read!

Hello Sal, I remember when my dad and I had to abandon our car and walk home in a heavy snow fall. It took us forever to get home but thankfully we got there where mother was waiting with a hot cup of tea and a roaring fire. This was along the old ring road going towards Marldon. We had already passed Shiphay. I can’t remember the exact year but I was working in Torquay so 1970’ish give or take a year or two. Your winter must have been a doozy.

I remember every time it snowed overnight, the joy of looking out the window at a world transformed over night. we never ever never had whipped cream on our things out side, but we did make ice cream of the snow on top of the car.

DeleteAs a child I was thrilled with snow after we moved from Alabama to Tennessee. Thrilled until my mittens were soaking wet and I was freezing. I love the pictures of snow though.
ReplyDeleteLiving in Florida as you do, it would be hard to get used to snow further up north. I don’t remember getting snow when I was young. Maybe it’s too far back that I have just forgotten.

DeleteOh, this quote is so true, Denise. When I first moved up here, my neighbor told me once that there is just something about the first snow. All is quiet, and everything becomes still for awhile. It really is a magical experience, isn't it?

Deletesuch a beautiful picture, turned into art!! we watched our snow fall yesterday and that was quite fun. it does usually snow through the night and you don't get to enjoy that part of it. from 7 am until 5 pm we watched it fall, and it was beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Debbie :) so glad you got your snow. Loved looking out at it today. It was very windy and though it didn’t snow, the wind blew it off the roofs and it looked like a sparkling mist with everywhere in swirls, fabulous especially with the sun being out. Definitely magical!
