A POEM - WINTER

Winter

When the geese are flying south
And the sky is grey, my dears,
Close your eyes, and lift your nose;
Listen with your careful ears.

Feel the winter coming on,
Hear it in the crackling trees;
Note the crisping, quivering wind
Sharply snapping at their leaves.

Feel it on the windowpanes –
Chilly glass on fingertips –
Mark the biting of the air,
Heated breath on numbing lips.

See it in the early eves,
In the glowing sunset where
Shadows of the naked trees
Rattle in the biting air.

Watch the nuthatch and the wren;
They know it is time once more
To abandon careful nests,
As they’ve done each year before.

Let it rest upon your face,
Let it reach and pull you in.
See how pretty nature is
When she ushers winter in.

  1. Oh my word, what a wonderful poem! And the descriptions are so vivid... Chilly glass, biting air, crackling trees. In a way, it makes winter seem like the best thing ever.

  11. Currently, there's a large community of Canada Geese and a larger group of Mallard ducks and gulls on the Nashua River, plus some gulls. They are looking for food as the river banks are once again snow covered and when anyone walks along the river bank, all come swimming over.

  21. This is a lovely poem, and I'm so glad to hear that you appreciate the winter months, Denise. Many just want spring to come with the warm weather, but it's hard for me to say good-bye to winter, as it's my favorite season living in the mountains.

    1. Thank you Sheri, so glad you agree. I thought the same when I found it. I find the winter to be a friend. I would love to experience it in the mountains. I used to holiday in the Alps in the winter. My friends and I loved it. The mountains are gorgeous any season, but I particularly love them in the wintertime :)
