SATURDAY MORNING AT THE BIRD FEEDER - THE SQUIRREL AND THE CHIPMUNK

I have many favorite visitors to my deck, this is one of them.  I find Chipmunks very comical little characters.  I sat on the carpet for half an hour, on the opposite side of the glass, watching him come and go while he scurried back and forth, filling his cheeks to the max with those peanuts, shell and all.

By this time he's gotten used to the lady with the black box, but.....

We occasionally have a conversation where I not only speak squirrel, but chipmunk also.

I think he finally remembered our last conversation because he gave me a lovely smile and came closer to the glass.

How are you doing little fella?

Errrr........

Hmmmm......I don't think they'll be too happy about that either.

I certainly am but you know what, you've got to stop chewing up the deck?

Hey, I think someone is telling porkies!

Sorry Mr. Chipmunk, that's English slang, Cockney actually.  It short for "pork pies", translation "lies".  Our little squirrel is trying to point the finger elsewhere instead of owning up to the truth.  And there I was looking at Gregg a little strangely for a while.

That's great, you do that.  See you next time!

I'm proud of you for telling the truth little buddy, and Gregg is too.

Hold on, I have to go to the store.  Be back in half an hour.  I have to tell you Mr. Chipmunk, the cashier is looking at me real funny these days with all these bags of peanuts I keep putting in my basket.  I told her I was making a lot of peanut butter.  Uh-oh!  I'm telling porkies, aren't I?

There is a great explanation of term 'porkies' at this link.

  1. What a little cutie. Porkies were used as a description for fibs here too.

    1. Glad you think so Angie. He usually makes several trips back and forth to his burrow, but Mr. Squirrel gets his fair share too :)

    1. They've been a bit scarce here too lately. I don't think they like the feed I've been putting out, but I still have quite a lot to finish off before I try another kind of seed :)

  8. Is a porkie like a white lie? or is it different? i enjoyed every word, every photo, every laugh out loud moment today. I love squirrels and have never seen a chipmunk, and he/she is just darling. I would never get anything done if i had these two to wash. i read the post then went through the photo slide show to enjoy their sweet faces

  9. Oh my, you have really made my day!! You should be a writer for a publication. I so much enjoy your birdfeeder days! And how I love Chipmunks! We had them behind the house that I grew up in. We would sit on the back porch steps as still as a statue forever it seemed, holding out a peanut. And if we were lucky, a Chipmunk would scurry up, grab it and run. The squirrels did this constantly, but the Chipmunks were so much more timid. As well they should be, they have many predators.

  10. I love your chipmunk and that reminds me I am missing mine this year. I never mind when the chips get into the bird feeder (just the squirrels). But so far I've not seen Skippy. Maybe I'm just missing him timewise.

  14. That's so cute, Denise. I don't see chipmunks that much up here, just the squirrels. You took some awesome photos of him. He looks a bit smaller than the squirrel, doesn't he? Oh, I do hope none bury themselves anywhere near my house. That would freak me out. He must have had a feast with those peanuts.

    1. Thank you so much Sheri, I really appreciate your sweet comments. He is quite a bit smaller than the squirrel. No, as long as they stay outside they're fine with me. In all these years we have been seeing them, I have never ever had any problems. Now I hope I haven't jinxed myself :)
