FAVORITES - SUBJECT: LEAVES

Leaves can be as pretty as a flower.  Here are a few favorites, not taken this past month but over several years.

“Anyone can love a rose, but it takes a lot to love a leaf.  It’s ordinary to love the beautiful, but it’s beautiful to love the ordinary.”

  1. Denise, first of all, I wanted to let you know that I learned something from you tonight. You're right, it IS the Acorn Woodpecker. I always thought it was the red-headed Woodpecker all these years, but they are a bit different. I really do love the bird, but it can be annoying at times. Last year, I heard him in the middle of the night pecking under the eaves of my house, and before I moved in, I noticed holes under the eaves, which have to be patched before the house is painted. But it is a lovely bird, isn't it? Do you see them at all around your neck of the woods? I love this quote that you shared, and I believe I used it one time on a blog post.

Wishing you wonderful October days, Denise.

    1. Hi Sheri, that's wonderful! So glad I could help. I was always confused as to why our Red-bellied woodpecker wasn't called a Red-headed woodpecker, as there was very little red on its tummy, and yet more red on its head, and then I saw the Red-headed one and it all became clear. We used to have one as an alarm clock over our bedroom window. Much preferred the cooing of the doves :) That would be disconcerting with the holes. I see what the trees are like where they have buried their acorns. Yes, a lovely bird. We have the Red-bellied woodpecker and the Downy woodpecker here, I see them every day. Thank you Sheri, I wish you the same :)

  3. They can indeed (and often are) be as beautiful as any flower. There is such a huge range of colour, shape and textures.

  5. A lovely mosaic Denise. It's good to focus on leaves. I like to identify trees, bushes and plants from the shape of the leaf.
