Oatlands on April 21st (2019), the sky was glorious. Just couldn't capture it all in a photo, but I gave it a good try.
"It is a very beautiful day. The woman looks around and thinks: 'there cannot ever have been a spring more beautiful than this. I did not know until now that clouds could be like this. I did not know that the sky is the sea and that clouds are the souls of happy ships, sunk long ago. I did not know that the wind could be tender, like hands as they caress.
What did I know, until now?'"
~Unica Zürn~
"Aren't the clouds beautiful? They look like big balls of cotton. I could just lie here all day and watch them drift by. If you use your imaginations you can see lots of things in the cloud formations. What do you think you see Linus?" "Well, those clouds up there look like the map of the British Honduras on the Caribbean. That cloud up there looks a little like the profile of Thomas Eakins, the famous painter and sculptor. And that group of clouds over there gives me the impression of the stoning of Stephen...I can see the apostle Paul standing there to one side..." "Uh-huh, that's good. What do you see in the clouds Charlie Brown?" "Well, I was going to say I saw a ducky and a horsie, but I changed my mind."
~Charles M. Schulz from
The Complete Peanuts, Vol. 5: 1959-1960~
In the photo above you can see the Old Stone House, which is on part of the Manassas Civil War Battleground. The photos below were taken in Leesburg (Virginia) after our visit to the plantation. I found this website that tells its history.
I always enjoy looking at the old homes in historical areas.
I couldn't find out much about them...
but saw a very brief comment about the old log cabin built in 1763.
Who walked through that door and looked out of the window I wonder?
The last photo is of one of the side streets leading down to the main road.
The clouds really are the star of this incredible post. And it does look like someone is peeking out of the window...a bit unsettling! Perhaps it it just the way the curtain is hanging.
ReplyDeleteHi Ginny, thank you and I was just using my imagination about someone looking out the window, stepping back in time wondering who all looked out of that window. A small flight of fancy on my part :)
DeleteThe clouds is all the photographs are brilliant.
ReplyDeleteThanks Margaret, they were the prettiest I had seen in a long time.
DeleteIt does indeed look like a beautiful day.
ReplyDeleteI hope I am never too old and jaded to marvel at clouds (and thanks for the cloud quotes).
Thank you EC and you are very welcome. I am of the same mind, never too old to enjoy the beauty of cloud watching.
DeleteThe fluffy clouds are lovely and so too those beautiful old houses. Love your text also.
ReplyDeleteThank you Diane, glad you enjoyed :)
DeleteLoved this post, Denise. It reminded me of the days when I explored, sadly now unable so to do. The cloud's are brilliant, it's a long time since I saw such a display.
ReplyDeleteThat's great Valerie, thank you, and I'm glad you have those good memories.
Delete~Belas fotografias, gostei de ver.

ReplyDeleteThank you Sandra, it is always hard for me to pick a favorite.
DeleteHello, the clouds and sky are beautiful. Love the houses and neighborhood. Pretty photos. Enjoy your day and week ahead.
ReplyDeleteThank you Eileen and the same to you :)
DeleteI have friends with an old log cabin in a similar style. They chose to keep it as a guest house and build a new cottage beside it.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful and what a great idea :)
DeleteWoow so beautiful shots! Great work!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much ReHi Tu :)
DeleteWhile hitch hiking one time I rode with a couple with two little kids. For much of my time with them they looked at clouds to see forms. I often wonder what happened to these kids. I'm sure their imaginations were better than most .
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had some wonderful hikes with the kids Red and I bet they loved you for it. Imagination is a great and wonderful part of our lives.
DeleteClouds are fascinating and I love old buildings. Have a good week, Diane
ReplyDeleteWe are of like mind Diane, you have a great weekend :)
DeleteHi Denise,
ReplyDeleteSome superb images of clouds and the sky with matching words with them.
Love the old house and the area appears very interesting.
All the best John
Hi John, thank you. The skies were just begging for me to photograph them. The prettiest I had seen in a long time. The Old Stone House is one of my favorite landmarks around here, with lots of lovely walks around it.
DeleteI love this post, Denise. Such lovely words and beautiful photos of the clouds! The old houses are beautiful and I wonder the same thing about the folks that have walked through the doors and looked out the windows! So much history follows us everywhere we go, doesn't it? Thank you for sharing your lovely day!
ReplyDeleteI am happy you enjoyed it Martha Ellen and you are very welcome. History certainly does follow us everywhere we go, couldn't have put it better myself. I was always curious about life and it hasn't stopped throughout my own.
DeleteGorgeous skies!
ReplyDeleteAgreed William, just it was glorious that day.
DeleteThe clouds are amazing, Denise. They add drama to your other photos especially that one of the Old Stone House. I hope you find out more information about the history of who lived in the houses. It looks as if they have been beautifully restored.
ReplyDeleteThank you, it is a wonderful area and I hope I can find out more about the homes.
