The old deck has now been taken down. You can see it at this link.
Here is the flooring. It took a while to decide to go away from 'real' wood to the fake kind. The thought of not having to do a yearly maintenance - no sanding, sealing or repairing - helped with our decision. Truthfully, it is more appealing to get away from the maintenance aspect as we get older. We also felt we received good advice from the owner of the deck-building company.
We had three estimates and after looking at the samples he showed us, and the knowledge that he had about this product, it gave us confidence that we had picked the right person. His was the best out of the three estimates we had asked for. It was also his own business, and we more often than not like to support our local businesses.
The material is called Trex. There were several colors to choose from. It was hard but we finally settled for this...
along with white framework with aluminum railings...
and kept our fingers crossed that we had made the right choices.
Once again, we were very impressed with these young men, not only for the long hours they worked, but for their skill. Their good manners were also noted by both of us.
Next you can see the original wooden post and the protective sleeve that surrounds it. There are a couple of leaves on the top. The leaves are falling like rain today, but I am thankful it hasn't actually rained hard, except in the beginning.
"Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do."
~Pele, Brazilian soccer player~
I was looking through my collection of poetry, and couldn’t find one that fit with what I wanted to say. Gregg really likes this AI program - Perplexity - and unbeknownst to me, he asked for a poem describing this whole experience. It is a bit whimsical and a bit silly, but I said I would share it.
Craftsmen five, we sing your praise,
For building us a deck in just a few days.
With skill and care, you worked each plank,
And now our backyard is a place to thank.
Your hammers rang and saws did whir,
As you built a place for us to stir.
We'll sit and relax, with drinks in hand,
And enjoy the fruits of your labors so grand.
We thank you for your hard work and skill,
And for building us a deck that's such a thrill.
Craftsmen five, we sing your praise,
For building us a deck in just a few days.
And there you go, groaner or not, I said I would share the poem with you all today, and it does embody how we felt.
Also, you can see how it's coming along. I will have one more post when it is finished. Last Friday (the 29th) they were 99% there. On Monday (yesterday) they came back one more time to finish up on the cosmetics. I will start putting together a final post to share soon.
This week our neighborhood has had a lot of hammering going on. Several neighbors have been having new roofs after the hailstorm from several weeks ago. The people behind us had men on their roof at the same time as our deck was being built.
Thanks for looking and have a great day!
It is looking great - and less maintenance is a huge win too.
ReplyDeleteThank you Sue, it truly is :)
DeleteI love the color you chose for the floor. Real wood warps, and constantly needs coated and such. The black and white trim make it all look modern. What lovely work they did! Now about underneath, will it have some kind of floor so you could put stuff under there? Will animals get underneath there You may actually like that, if it would help protect wildlife.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ginny :) We had the same underneath with the old wooden trellis, and used to put a few things under the deck. I have talked to Gregg about having it as a designated dry area, but that will be something we will have to do later, to make it more enclosed and free from rain. We never noticed any animals under there, not the larger kind anyway.
DeleteWell that does look lovely in all white surrounds. The floor is a good idea and similar is used down here for many things. Enjoy your new deck Denise.
ReplyDeleteHappy you think so Margaret, thank you :) We intend to put a few pieces of outdoor furniture out there but are going to wait until next spring now. We have a couple of very comfortable fold up canvas-type chairs we tuck away in the boot/trunk of the car, for when we road trip, and could put those out there if we felt like sitting out on the deck in the meantime.
DeleteIt actually looks like you took very good care of the old deck! Love how the new side pieces have small enough holes to hopefully keep out unwanted critters. Be sure those workers get that poem! They could use it as a reference! Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda :) Those side pieces will be a deterrent to bigger critters, which is what we had with the old deck. The old deck was getting a bit worrisome and needed to be replaced as the wood was finally started to rot.
DeleteA very beautiful terrace.
ReplyDeleteThank you Anne :)
DeleteOh! The deck is gorgeous!! Well done on the Trex pick...and color! I love the white railings.
ReplyDeleteWill you have a cover added?
hugs
Donna
Thanks Donna :) No cover added, just the privacy fence.
DeleteOh I love the looks of that. I also like the idea of no maintenance. My deck needs to be powerwashed and stained very badly but I just don't have the ambition to do it.
ReplyDeleteThank you Ann! Not having to maintain it as much was a big plus in our decision. I expect we will have to powerwash it eventually, and the leaves are falling so there will be sweeping involved :) Also trying to figure out how to feed the birds as the rail is thinner, and we don't really want to attach any hardware. We will figure that out eventually.
DeleteLooks like a big job. Completely DIY.
ReplyDeleteYes, lots of sawing and banging this past week :)
DeleteHello Denise,
ReplyDeleteYour new deck is looking beautiful. It is nice to the trek, less maintenance is good.
Take care, have a great day and happy week ahead!
Thank you Eileen and I wish you the same :)
DeleteAs one gets older less maintenance becomes more appealing. Miriam is the gardener in our family and she now says, “The garden is terrific, the gardening not so much.”
ReplyDeleteVery much so David and I love Miriam's saying :)
DeleteI actually quite like the fake one...looks great!
ReplyDeleteSuper, thank you Angie :)
Deletei have all the questions Ginny asked and one more, what is going on the tall poles? will there be a roof? It looks really good with your home and fits right in like it was always there. now i wonder how the wildlife will like it. will they run and scamper? will the cam show us great shots? can't wait to see it finished.
ReplyDeleteHi Sandra :) The tall poles are the framework for the privacy screen. There will be no roof. We had a wildlife visitor last night which I will tell you about in another post. It answered a question as I wondered the same. I'm looking forward to putting our deck cam out there again but have to sort out the bird feeding situation first. It's quite warm during the day this week, but when nature's food starts getting scarce, I will be feeding them again. I'll do another post very soon on the finished deck and what I come up with as far as the birds (and squirrels) are concerned.
DeleteI do like the choices you made. So wise as we age to choose products that are less labor intensive. It really looks wonderful. Let's see how your feathered friends and silly squirrels feel about your changes. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Ellen, so glad :) Most definitely, and I think of these things more and more lately. Yes, we'll have to wait and see what my backyard buddies feel about it.
DeleteHello! It is stunning!!! I absolutely love it. And the low maintenance is a win! Enjoy every minute, my friend.
ReplyDeleteKind of you to say so Billie Jo, and much appreciated :) We will, thank you so much!
DeleteWow! This is so pretty, a very nice deck indeed. Have a great day today.
ReplyDeleteHello there and welcome to my blog :) Thank you very much and you have a great day also.
DeleteComing along so nicely! The good part this is going on outside your house!
ReplyDeleteThanks Christine :) very true!
DeleteYour new deck is lovely. You will enjoy it a lot, I’m sure, and hassle free. Your little poem is quite fetching – you have a way with words.
ReplyDeleteThank you Vagabond :) but cannot claim the poem as my own. It was written by an AI poem that my husband found.
DeleteQuite a project.
ReplyDeleteIt was, the biggest one we have had for many years :)
DeleteThat does look a very nice new deck ...
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Thank you Jan and all the best to you too :)
DeleteDenise, you have a beautiful deck! The fact it is maintenance free is wonderful. The color is lovely accented by the white railings. I'm sure you will enjoy many lovely hours enjoying the outdoors there. Oh, and the poem was cute!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Martha Ellen :) I am so glad you liked it. It will be fun to choose what we are going to put out there.
DeleteCongratulations. Trex is good stuff. They make it in Winchester, basically from wood scraps and recycled plastic bags. Some of the nonprofits here have conducted plastic bag drives with Trex, giving them a free bench for reaching a certain goal.
ReplyDeleteThank you Linda :) and that’s very interesting. I am so glad to know this. Much appreciated!
DeleteI love our poem -- certainly better than anything I would write! And I like the flooring you chose. It makes a lot of sense and looks terrific.
ReplyDeleteGreat! Thank you Jeanie :) so glad you feel that way.
DeleteI love both poems, very suitable for the work done. Your new deck is terrific. I love it.
ReplyDeleteWonderful! Thank you Gigi :) and I am happy you like our new deck. It gives me confidence that we made the right choice.
