Revisiting a trip I took to England in June 2015.
Where we stayed there was a small garden, and one day I was delighted to see a European Robin.
They were and still are very popular illustrations to put on Christmas Cards as you probably know, and I remember them from those cards that popped through the letter box each December. I don't remember seeing them when I was growing up, but then I wasn't as interested in observing birds as I am now. I was always happy to see the seagulls swoop into our garden from the age of 15 onwards, when we moved nearer the seaside, and always when we visited the beach. But I was beyond happy to get my first real sighting of this dear little Robin.
The next day I saw a Common Wood Pigeon...
and also a male Blackbird.
We kept ourselves busy sight-seeing on our English holiday, but it was nice to come back and sit in the garden. Our Robin kept us company quite a lot. We think she may have had a nest in the bushes.

The blackbird looks very clever and smart! And of course, this is the only REAL robin! the ones here in the states are some kind of Thrush I believe. This one does look a bit like a bluebird, so cute!
ReplyDeleteI seem to remember reading that they were very smart Ginny. I learned from Red about the American Robin not being a real robin from Red only a little while ago. I am happy you enjoyed my birds :)
DeleteLovely birds. I too came to bird watching late - but am revelling in it now.
ReplyDeleteThank you EC, I also came to it late but loving it now too. I am loving all those Australian birds you share on your blog :)

DeleteI've never seen a European robin but if I do I'll know what they are now.
ReplyDeleteThank you Linda :) I always used to think of them as English Robins because of my memory of the Christmas Cards, but only much later did I learn that people referred to them as European Robins.
Deletehe is a sweet and beautiful Robin. i have always liked pigeons but know there are many who consider them pest
ReplyDeleteThanks Sandra, I like them too but I suppose there are a lot of birds out there people would think of as pests :)

DeleteI remember the first time we saw a darling British robin, Denise. They are so sweet and appear to have an orange heart on their chest. The wood pigeon has such a soothing call. Some say it sounds like--"My toe hurts, Betty." Lovely photos, Denise. Thank you for always bringing interesting posts.
ReplyDeleteThey are lovely aren't they Martha Ellen? I will remember that about the toe hurting ;) I am very happy you think my posts are interesting, thank you so much!

ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful day!
Thank you Lea! It is always nice to see birds in other countries and other areas of the States. I notice birds out west that we don't get here in the East. Always a treat to see some different ones.
