An in between post while I am putting together my last one on Frying Pan Park.
Knowing how much I enjoy fashions through the ages, Gregg shared this old postcard that popped up in one of his e-mails. These ladies are paddling at the water's edge in Torquay, which is where I worked for several years before I met my dear husband there almost 43 years ago. I can't imagine wearing all those clothes on a hot day at the beach, but wear them they did and enjoyed themselves tremendously by the look of it.
Here is an interesting Jane Austen quote:
"I hate to hear you talk about all women as if they were fine ladies instead of rational creatures. None of us want to be in calm waters all our lives."
Any thoughts on that quote?
The meaning I get from this quote is how men treated ladies as fragile creatures fit mainly for housework and mothering. Perhaps they do not want them involved in any important decision making, thinking they are protecting them. What a fun picture!!

ReplyDeleteJane Austen isn't speaking for me. The purportedly Chinese curse 'May you live in interesting times' has always struck me as vicious. Calmness/dullness is just fine by me.
It would be a challenge I agree. That sounds good to me too :)

DeleteWhat a great reminder that we have heads on our shoulders and can persevere as needed. It's always cool to look at fashions and furniture from back in the day. I adore looking at fashions from the 40's, 50's and 60's and try to catch movies from that whenever possible. Happy Tuesday and Hugs! RO

Deletemy thoughts are the days of fine ladies are gone and also most ladies are not rational anymore... the lady world seems to have gone crazy. I don't want to act like these ladies, but some women are out of control to me

ReplyDeleteA little adventure is always fun. I'm not too brave so I don't think I would want any kind of danger :) I remember climbing a cliff face at the beach once to escape the incoming tide with friends. That was when I was a young teenager. Didn't think much of it at the time but now I roll my eyes at the thought :)
