AN OLD GATE

I could happily lean on a gate all the livelong day, chatting to passers-by about the wind and the rain.  I do a lot of gate-leaning while I am supposed to be gardening; instead of hoeing, I lean on the gate, stare at the vegetable beds and ponder.

I have my own memory of an old gate in front of our home, and from the ages of five to fifteen, I spent many a time swinging on it, leaning on it, climbing up it (to a child it seemed like Mt. Everest) and watching the world go by.  This is not that gate I am sharing today, but an old photo I took on our last trip to England.

  1. I must say I don't have any memory of ever leaning on a gate but this is a beautiful gate and I would lean on it if I could. We never had fencing when I was growing up

    1. We lived in a police house, and that old gate was a great memory for me for life as a little kid swinging on the gate. I'm surprised it never dropped its hinges looking back, but they built them solidly back then :) Hubby grew up with no fencing either. I did wherever we lived.

  3. To me, wooden gates are a country sign of times gone by. I am trying to think if I have any gate memories, but alas I don't. I would LIVE by this one, with the little path and gorgeous big hedges!

    1. Thanks Ginny, I often think of that old gate in my childhood, and scenes flash through my memory of what I saw when swinging on the old gate.

  4. We used to have a small gate at the bottom of the garden the the UK. Don't think I ever got to swing on it though! Great shot. Have a good week Diane

    1. Where we lived in that old neighborhood, everyone seemed to have a garden gate. I don't see too many around here as there are not many people who fence in their gardens. Thanks Diane and have a good week too :)

  9. This lovely little gate makes one think of happy days in a warm, loving home with smiling faces around the evening fire while the children are read to, maybe Peter Pan (my daughter's favorite!) I just love it!

  10. I think I must have swung on the gate a little too much, my clearest memories of it is Mum calling to me to get off the gate before I broke it! Your gate today is well worth a photo all to itself.

  11. I have my own memories and I don't even have an old gate. When I'm working in my yard I get to talk to all the people who go by.

    1. Thank you Debbie, I seem to notice everything and the memories always flood back. Probably why it takes me thrice as long to get anywhere as I keep stopping to take photos, and remembering, lol!
