OLD FAMILY PHOTO - SIX SISTERS

Gregg recently acquired this wonderful old photograph of family members, six sisters taken a very long time ago.  These old photos are the real treasures.

    This is a wonderful photo and yes, they are indeed treasures. I have many old photos from my family but unfortunately no one thought to write names on the back, so I can only guess who some of them are.

      I have as many photos without names Lois, and I'm trying to ID and put on the back of them who they are. Also scanning and digitally saving now. It is an enormous task :)

    Oh my! This is a wonderful treasure!! Does he know how they are related to him, and what year it was taken? I look at their faces, and their clothes...so long ago! Many years ago, I had noticed that people in very old pictures never smiled. Then I read that they had to stand very still and not move anything for a very long time. So it was not possible to hold a smile that long. Poor people could not afford photos, so they took one last photo after the person ad died, to remember their face. Sorry for being gruesome, but I just LOVE this picture!

      Thank you Ginny. I have heard of this practice, it’s all part of the history of photography and must have been a great comfort to those who lost their loved ones. I had also been told of the ‘waiting a long time’ to have a photo taken. Must have been hard, especially for the little ones. Glad you enjoyed both the picture and the quote :)

    Fabulous photos and so lucky to have a big family. I am still very sad my only, much elder brother died in a car crash at 21, so I am basically an only child. As my parents were both only children, no close relatives at all :-(( Take care Diane

      Thank you Diane, although Gregg only has two siblings, the extended family is very large and the cousins are wonderfully generous with their photos. I am so sorry to hear about your brother.

    this is AMAZING, 6 daughters. I love the stair step they used to take it. the older could have been the mother of the youngest. what a great piece of history to have

    Definitely a treasure. I have very, very few photos of my parents and none of any relative further back. Or even of my parent's siblings.

    Quite a wonderful old photo that Gregg has got and I wondered if the sisters shown were perhaps family members from back when...or if he simply bought the photo because he liked the image. Many times, I have seen old family photos in antique shops and I nearly always stop to look through them and sometimes fantasize about the people and places.

      Hello Dorothy, this photo is part of his family from about 1903. I have just found out they are his first cousins twice removed :) I like that idea of going to antique shops and buying old photos. They must have some real treasures. If only it comes with a history but making one up would be fun, you could write a book :)
