I could happily lean on a gate all the livelong day, chatting to passers-by about the wind and the rain. I do a lot of gate-leaning while I am supposed to be gardening; instead of hoeing, I lean on the gate, stare at the vegetable beds and ponder.

I have my own memory of an old gate in front of our home, and from the ages of five to fifteen, I spent many a time swinging on it, leaning on it, climbing up it (to a child it seemed like Mt. Everest) and watching the world go by. This is not that gate I am sharing today, but an old photo I took on our last trip to England.
I must say I don't have any memory of ever leaning on a gate but this is a beautiful gate and I would lean on it if I could. We never had fencing when I was growing up
ReplyDeleteWe lived in a police house, and that old gate was a great memory for me for life as a little kid swinging on the gate. I'm surprised it never dropped its hinges looking back, but they built them solidly back then :) Hubby grew up with no fencing either. I did wherever we lived.
DeleteDenise, nice remembrance. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThank you Doug :)
DeleteQuiet, nice...
ReplyDeleteThank you Sandi :)
DeleteTo me, wooden gates are a country sign of times gone by. I am trying to think if I have any gate memories, but alas I don't. I would LIVE by this one, with the little path and gorgeous big hedges!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ginny, I often think of that old gate in my childhood, and scenes flash through my memory of what I saw when swinging on the old gate.
DeleteWe used to have a small gate at the bottom of the garden the the UK. Don't think I ever got to swing on it though! Great shot. Have a good week Diane
ReplyDeleteWhere we lived in that old neighborhood, everyone seemed to have a garden gate. I don't see too many around here as there are not many people who fence in their gardens. Thanks Diane and have a good week too :)
DeleteA lovely shot. You don't really see such gates here.
ReplyDeleteThanks William :)
Deletea gate to a secret garden
ReplyDeleteI would love a secret garden :)

ReplyDeleteThank you Eileen and the same wishes for you too :)
DeleteI have similar memories...
ReplyDeleteThat's lovely!
DeleteThank you for sharing yourself!
ReplyDeleteYou are very welcome and thank you Cloudia :)
DeleteSuch a lovely photo, Denise! It looks so peaceful and enchanting!
ReplyDeleteVery happy you enjoyed it Linda :) Thank you!
DeleteThis lovely little gate makes one think of happy days in a warm, loving home with smiling faces around the evening fire while the children are read to, maybe Peter Pan (my daughter's favorite!) I just love it!
ReplyDeleteThank you Marie, I am so glad it evoked such a wonderful feeling of home around the fire.
DeleteI think I must have swung on the gate a little too much, my clearest memories of it is Mum calling to me to get off the gate before I broke it! Your gate today is well worth a photo all to itself.
ReplyDeleteThank you Pauline, and for sharing those memories of your own gate. I'm sure I had similar conversations with my Mum :)
DeleteI have my own memories and I don't even have an old gate. When I'm working in my yard I get to talk to all the people who go by.
ReplyDeleteThat's real nice Red. Now I can envision you talking to your neighbors as they go by.
DeleteThat's my kind of gate! Fun memories.
ReplyDeleteYes indeed and thanks Ellen :)
DeleteI like going through the gates to the historical houses in Williamsburg Va. I see them as welcoming and I love a garden gate. I do love the one you have pictured. betsy
ReplyDeleteThank you Betsy, I know Williamsburg well and know of those gates. I love going there.
DeleteThat is certainly a very picturesque gate.
ReplyDeleteI thought so too :)
Deleteit's such a pretty image denise - most people would walk right by and not even notice!! nice that it evoked a happy memory for you!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Debbie, I seem to notice everything and the memories always flood back. Probably why it takes me thrice as long to get anywhere as I keep stopping to take photos, and remembering, lol!
DeleteThe light is wonderful in this photo! What a lovely gate!
ReplyDeleteThanks Lois I liked it too.
DeleteThanks Linda, I actually took it from this angle because there were people in the garden and I didn't want to appear too nosey, lol!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photo and wonderful memories! No fences or gates where I lived as a child, but Bill talks about both.
ReplyDeleteThank you Sallie :)
DeleteOh, so sweet a memory! It's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThank you Jenn :)
DeleteOh what a great memory. I love the gate pic. Nice job.. Make that cake, cherry and pineapple make a fantastic combo. It is very simple to make and don't take anything special to make it....enjoy
ReplyDeleteHappy you enjoyed my memories Pam, and the photo. Thanks for the tip on the cake. Definitely going to make it and I will let you know when I do.
