FEW PEOPLE KNOW…

“Few people know how to take a walk. The qualifications are endurance, plain clothes, old shoes, an eye for nature, good humor, vast curiosity, good speech, good silence, and nothing too much.”

~Ralph Waldo Emerson~

Ralph Waldo Emerson (May 25, 1803 - April 27, 1882) who went by his middle name Waldo, was an American essayist, lecturer, philosopher, abolitionist and poet who led the Transcendentalist/Transcendentalism movement of the mid-19th century. He was seen as a champion of Individualism and critical thinking, as well as a prescient critic of the countervailing pressures of society and conformity. Friedrich Nietzsche thought he was "the most gifted of the Americans", and Walt Whitman called him his "master".

  3. That's a perfect description about taking a walk. Silence is particularly important in order to enjoy the wildlife, the birds singing and so on. The photo illustration is lovely. I can imagine taking a walk in the woods along that path.

    1. Oh my, we have yet to experience the humidity. I will not be taking a lot of walks when that happens. I find it can be quite crushing! I will probably be doing the same as you. Sending hugs :)

    1. Hi Linda :) Yes, it's hard when having knee problems. I can attest to that. Hopefully that will all calm down for both of us.

    1. Do we ever Martha Ellen. It will certainly curtail our outdoor walks. Someone suggested the malls but I can't tolerate them at any time of the day. Oh well! I will think of something. I hope your day was a great one too :)

  12. I agree Denise. I had a very nice 3,144 step 1 mile walk this am. I used my words lokts too several sweet furry friends walking their humans. Met Daisy a Black who is a service dog (she was working so I admire her with words only) and Levi a mix of several med size dog varities. He was cute

  16. Good silence - that is hard to achieve for sure! I don't walk with headphones or the like but everyone and everything around me seems so busy/chaotic when I walk outside. Very thoughtful quote...now my mind is thinking:) Hope you are enjoying these beautiful weather to start our week here in Northern Virginia!

    1. Hi Jennifer, this is one of my favorite places to walk as apart from the wildlife and depending on the time we go (try to avoid the weekends), it is relatively quiet on a week day. A few walkers but otherwise blessed peace :) Extraordinary considering this beautiful park is in the middle of an extremely busy urban area :)
