“Few people know how to take a walk. The qualifications are endurance, plain clothes, old shoes, an eye for nature, good humor, vast curiosity, good speech, good silence, and nothing too much.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson (May 25, 1803 - April 27, 1882) who went by his middle name Waldo, was an American essayist, lecturer, philosopher, abolitionist and poet who led the Transcendentalist/Transcendentalism movement of the mid-19th century. He was seen as a champion of Individualism and critical thinking, as well as a prescient critic of the countervailing pressures of society and conformity. Friedrich Nietzsche thought he was "the most gifted of the Americans", and Walt Whitman called him his "master".
Good morning Denise.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with Emerson.
Very beautiful photos!
Greetings Katerina :) Thank you so much, he was a very wise man.
DeleteThis is quite something to think about!! Which I never have before in this particular way!
ReplyDeleteThese interesting quotes do make us think don't they? :)
DeleteHow very true!
ReplyDeleteYes indeed :)
DeleteEmerson is so wise!
ReplyDeleteVery :)
DeleteThat's a perfect description about taking a walk. Silence is particularly important in order to enjoy the wildlife, the birds singing and so on. The photo illustration is lovely. I can imagine taking a walk in the woods along that path.
ReplyDeleteI love a good walk in silence Linda and agree with you :) Thank you!
DeleteTrue. Anice capture there too.
ReplyDeleteThank you Margaret, happy you enjoyed :)
DeleteSounds good to me.
ReplyDeleteMe too :)
DeleteA perfect comment!
ReplyDeleteI thought so too :)
DeleteI like the quote. The photos are drawing me in. I want to follow that path.
ReplyDeleteSo glad Ann :) I enjoy walking this path and have been along it many, many times over the years.
DeleteWhat a remarkable quote - it's not too much.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely not too much. It is a great quote :)
DeleteA great quote! Take care, enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked it Eileen and I wish you the same :)
DeleteI do...but I do it in my house...lol...I've worn a long path in the livingroom. It's already too hot to walk outside.
ReplyDeletehugs
Donna
Oh my, we have yet to experience the humidity. I will not be taking a lot of walks when that happens. I find it can be quite crushing! I will probably be doing the same as you. Sending hugs :)
DeleteRalph Waldo Emerson is as wise today as he was back then.
ReplyDeleteSo wise David :)
Deletebeautiful and true
ReplyDeleteVery much so, thank you Sandi :)
DeleteRalph Waldo Emerson was a wise man in his description of walking in the countryside and forests.
ReplyDeleteYes he was, thank you Beverley :)
DeleteLove this from Mr. Emerson and a perfect walk you have captured, my friend! Beautiful in every way. Now we need to get those shoes on before it heats up. Have a great day.
ReplyDeleteDo we ever Martha Ellen. It will certainly curtail our outdoor walks. Someone suggested the malls but I can't tolerate them at any time of the day. Oh well! I will think of something. I hope your day was a great one too :)
Deleteagree 1000 percent
ReplyDeleteYes indeed, thanks Sandra :)
DeleteI agree Denise. I had a very nice 3,144 step 1 mile walk this am. I used my words lokts too several sweet furry friends walking their humans. Met Daisy a Black who is a service dog (she was working so I admire her with words only) and Levi a mix of several med size dog varities. He was cute
ReplyDeleteHugs Cecilia
That's wonderful Cecilia :) How lovely meeting your furry friends. Bless them! Sending hugs!
DeleteWorks for me!
ReplyDeleteMe too :)
DeleteThat is a beautiful trail to walk!
ReplyDeleteI love it Ellen, I have to remember to look at my feet sometimes as my head is always looking up at the tree tops :)
DeleteGood quote from Emerson but we could have some fun with some of his vague comments
ReplyDeleteI believe we could, thank you Red :)
Deletewhat a great verse and a beautiful picture!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Debbie, glad you enjoyed them :)
DeleteHi Linda :) Yes, it's hard when having knee problems. I can attest to that. Hopefully that will all calm down for both of us.
ReplyDeleteGood silence - that is hard to achieve for sure! I don't walk with headphones or the like but everyone and everything around me seems so busy/chaotic when I walk outside. Very thoughtful quote...now my mind is thinking:) Hope you are enjoying these beautiful weather to start our week here in Northern Virginia!
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer, this is one of my favorite places to walk as apart from the wildlife and depending on the time we go (try to avoid the weekends), it is relatively quiet on a week day. A few walkers but otherwise blessed peace :) Extraordinary considering this beautiful park is in the middle of an extremely busy urban area :)
DeleteI believe you exemplify those qualities and it makes you a good companion in these jaunts we take together. Looking forward to more bird cartoon antics too! I hope you are really enjoying a beautiful spring together. Aloha!
ReplyDeleteThank you Cloudia, you couldn’t have paid me a better compliment. It’s been a lovely Spring thank you, I hope yours has too :)
DeleteGreat quote and beautiful photos, Denise.
ReplyDeleteEmerson is so wise!
Thank you Veronica Lee, I agree with you :)
DeleteEmerson wrote very wise words, Denise, because there is nothing better than a quiet walk in nature as I know that you and Gregg heartily agree.
ReplyDeleteWe certainly do Dorothy and thank you. Emerson was a very wise man :)
DeleteThat path is just so inviting...
ReplyDeleteIt's calling me right now Rose :)
DeleteRalph Waldo Emerson sure knows how to write the delightful quotes. I like this one, and I love spending time in nature.
ReplyDelete~Sheri
Didn't he? I love his poetry. We are kindred spirits Sheri, another nature lover :)
