This is another post from my old blog that I closed several years ago. As I am still not able to go too far, I thought it would be a good time to transfer our travels, or others, to this one. I intend to do this several times for as many months as it takes, as I want to get everything on one blog, travels and all.
Charlie and Cora's visitor
At which Cora said, "Times have changed Charlie, how about YOU putting the kettle on." And yes I am smiling.
We visited Monterey in October 2009, and several years before that, hubby was going to the Navy Postgraduate School. We lived in Monterey for a couple of years, when our son was three years old, and to say we loved it is an understatement. If we had had the chance, this was one of the places we would have decided to live permanently, but there are many forks in life's highway aren't there? We feel blessed we had this wonderful opportunity and have visited two or three times since. The aquarium was a favorite. We had yearly passes when we lived there, and visited often.
On this occasion when we were touring the aquarium in 2009, we made our way to their outside observation deck. It has an incredible view looking across the bay and there was a lot of activity going on. The ever-present Cormorants were sitting on the rocks, and we saw a man snorkeling nearby. At the time I thought perhaps the man was on the staff at the aquarium, checking things out. From our angle it seemed that Charlie and Cora were very interested in what he was doing.
If you enlarge the photo below, you will see that a curious seal has joined in, top right. The red float is attached to the man in the water who is out of sight for the moment.
Same photo, but I circled the seal.
I would dearly have enjoyed having a conversation with the diver to see what he was doing, but maybe he was just having fun. Or perhaps he was collecting shellfish, mussels, clams? Who knows!
He swam off shortly afterwards and we left to tour the rest of the aquarium.
Added note: everything seen floating in the water is actually part of the kelp forest. You can read about it at this link.

These are lovely captures Denise and it's always good to look back and repost when necessary.
ReplyDeleteThank you Margaret, I agree, I enjoy looking back at all the memories as I get older.
Deletethe diver looks like a water monster lurking around. Surprised he didn't scare the birds away. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteHe does and I noticed he has added camouflage to his head gear. Maybe the birds are used to him swimming around. That's why I thought perhaps he was one of the aquarium staff checking things out and had done this regularly.
DeleteI think it would be the most fun thing to do, just stand on the observation deck and see all these things going on.
ReplyDeleteIt was Ginny, a favorite pastime of mine :)
DeleteI wouldn't like to be the diver. Never know what might be in the water there. The birds are cute. We stayed in Monterey on our first visit to the States in 1970. It is a lovely town.
ReplyDeleteIt would be interesting to find out what was in those waters. The link I provided at the bottom of my post takes you to their website that shows photos of marine life in the area. It's good to learn you visited Monterey in 1970. I had forgotten you had visited before your second trip when we met up, a lovely memory of meeting you and Bill :)
DeleteHow great is this visit!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Anni, it certainly was a lovely memory.
DeleteWonderful photos. I don't think I would have spotted that seal if you hadn't mentioned it. Probably not the diver either.
ReplyDeleteHard to see amongst all that seaweed I know :) Thank you Ann!
DeleteIf you didn't say it's a seal, I thought it was garbage.
ReplyDeleteGlad I pointed it out Angie :) What looks like garbage is actually kelp.
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteWonderful captures of the cormorants, seal and the man snorkeling. Take care, enjoy your day!
Thank you Eileen, much appreciated :) You take care and enjoy your day also.
DeleteI love Monterrey Bay and especially the aquarium. Living there would be a fantasy retirement, but not in my budget.
ReplyDeleteWonderful Carol! Yes, a fantasy indeed, for us too :)
Deleteit is beautiful and would not have noticed the diver if you had not mentioned him. it is odd how our lives fork and fork again and we end up where we are and had no idea we would
ReplyDeleteThanks Sandra, and I think about those forks in the road all the time these days :)
DeleteYou wonder what the seal and birds think.
ReplyDeleteOne day we will be able to ask them through AI. Science-fiction perhaps but a lot of our science fiction turned into science fact. I think we have only touched the tip of the iceberg.
DeleteLovely to read your post and see your photographs ... good memories for you.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Hi Jan, I am so glad you enjoyed them :) Yes, very good memories. All the best to you too.

ReplyDeleteYou are very welcome Martha Ellen, I am happy you enjoyed. Not quite there yet for renewing my walks but hopefully soon. Thank you so much for asking :)
