This dog reminds me of my Nanny's dog Tony, except that he was all white. He had a sweet nature just like my Nanny, Dad's mother. I still have very fond memories of this dear lady. I was around ten years' old when she passed. I remember whenever I knew we were visiting her, which was often, I had the happiest feeling, just like I do now with the memory. My mother loved her very much also, and told me stories about her earlier life after she had gone. The two of them would sit for considerable lengths of time, just talking about the old days. One was when she met my Nandad. She wouldn't seriously think of going out with him because she was older than he by a few years, but he would not give up. He had set his cap for her and he took it upon himself to go over to the sea captain's house, where she worked as housekeeper and a nanny for their children. Nandad got down on his knees and yelled through the letterbox at the top of his lungs,
"Miss Lucy, will you go out with me? I will not leave until you agree", over and over again. To stop this embarrassment and for fear of being fired, she finally agreed and the rest as they say, is history.

What a great story! And his plan worked, too. This picture is just wonderful! I love the angle of the shot, too.
ReplyDeleteThankfully :) They were married for 60 plus years. Thank you Ginny, he was quite a ways off when I saw him so I was better able to line up my shot.
DeleteWhat a lovely story. Nandad knew what he wanted...
ReplyDeleteThank you EC and yes, Nandad was more bluster on the outside, but inside he was a marshmallow :)

DeleteHow lovely. I do like to hear stories of happy relationships. This one reminded me of my Joe, who was four years younger than me.... what the heck - he was happy with that.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad my story reminded you of Joe Valerie, and age should be the last thing considered where true love is concerned.

DeleteWhat a precious story!!!! I love it!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing it with us.
Did your mom write down any of the stories about "the old days"??? It would be wonderful if she did.
But if she didn't, you could now!!!!! Oh it would be a shame, to have these family treasures, lost to coming generations. Yes????

Thank you LC and you are very welcome. No, my Mom did not write her stories down but thankfully I remember many of them and am doing just that. I agree with you totally, future generations need to learn of them. We were just saying how lucky ours will be. They will have more information about us than ever before.
DeleteSweet dog, Denise, and such a lovely story.

DeleteYou brought a nostalgic tear to my eye, remembering my Lancashire mum telling a story or ten about folks back home: "oh and he had his cap set on her and wouldn't go away until he'd won her over."

DeleteWhat a delightful story, Denise. And how lucky are you to share the genes of such a romantic, brave man? I call what he did very brave. "The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear."
ReplyDeleteThank you Pauline, that is so sweet of you. I am very happy you enjoyed it and how my Nandad would love that quote, as do I :)
DeleteSo sweet! We don't have a dog, but my friend does and that dog sits every afternoon with her son watching him do his homework and waits by the window in the afternoon for the school bus to show up. It is such a sweet relationship.
