“l’m like an old turtle these days. I don’t run wide-open everywhere, but at the end of the day, I’ll be where I’m supposed to be.”
More facts about Box Turtles can be found here.
Thanks for looking and
I hope your week has been
a great one.
I have added this for our international friends to translate on the widget on my sidebar.
On the turtle image:
“Hello, I’m 47 years old. I’ve never left these 5 acres.
47 years in 5 acres. Mental map of every rock, log and puddle.
3 to 6 eggs per year - 90% predation rate - needs 100 years to work.
Winter hibernaculum - Summer range
Toxic mushroom specialist - eats fungi that poison mammals.
Relocate me and I spend months trying to return: crossing roads, burning energy, dying.
Shell hinge - closes completely. Airtight. Survives dogs, raccoons and lawnmowers.
I can live to 100 but only if you let me stay.
If you see me crossing your driveway: I’m going somewhere specific.

They look so ancient that's for sure. We have seen some swimming in the sea on our travels.

DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteGreat post on the Box Turtles, it is sad housing projects are taking over the habitats of wildlife. Take care, have a great day and a happy weekend.
Very true and thank you Eileen. I wish you the same :)
DeleteTurtles need all the care we can give them, and it would be great if we stopped taking most of their habitat and polluting what remains.
ReplyDeleteCouldn’t agree with you more David. Thank you :)
DeleteI've kind of been living my life on a loop for quite some time now. I guess that makes me a lot like a box turtle.

ReplyDeleteYou are very welcome Sandra. Always a good thing to help in any small way we can. They end up leading to bigger things :) Gregg’s sister for instance, volunteers a lot of her time protecting sea turtle eggs with an organization where she lives. I have long admired her for doing that.

DeleteOh yes! I love to watch the box turtle in my back yard. There is a certain way he goes across my yard and that is the way he goes! We have steep steps out front and one time the poor thing had fallen on his back. Of course, I turned him over! (Sometimes, it is difficult for them to do so.) AND if a turtle is crossing a road, help him or her across if possible. You know I do! I love turtles. xx
ReplyDeleteGood for you Kay. I will always stop for turtles :)
DeleteFascinating creatures ...
