AROUND AND ABOUTS - OLD RECIPES MADE

I had intended to post this for tomorrow but accidentally put it up now. I'll just leave it as it is. There will be no new post at midnight. One of those times my finger-pusher was faster than my brain this evening.

I haven't been around and about too much this week so far, or the last for that matter. Hoping to rectify that tomorrow. I can't go on any of my long walks but a ride in the car will be nice.

Today we made our daughter-in-law's recipe. She shared this a couple of years ago and it is a favorite, real easy and fast to put it together, Lemon Spaghetti with Spinach. I covered mine liberally with hot pepper flakes, freshly ground black pepper, sliced green onions and grated Parmesan. We also added extra lemon juice which we love. You can add your own favorites. We thought sliced mushroom might be nice, and sweet red pepper.

We took a drive over to Manassas National Battlefield Park on Thursday, 1/8/26, to see the sunset and enjoy a walk. Unfortunately the sun dipped below a wide cloud bank - no spectacular sunset but the skies were beautiful. There were about a dozen cars in the parking lot but there are enough wide, open spaces that we were in our own space all the time we were there.  I need my walker but as this is one area where there are hardly any benches, its seat comes in handy. The visitor center is equipped with great ramps for people with disabilities. I just read that there are benches around, but we looked and couldn’t find any. I will ask people at the visitor center next time. The building looked like it was closing. We asked someone bringing the flag down, at the beginning of our walk, when did we have to leave the parking lot. I was concerned that the barriers would be locked preventing us from getting our car out. She told us this was done half-an-hour after sunset. We made it in good time.
We went to Santini’s on our way home and shared a steak and cheese sub, plus a packet of steak fries. We were going somewhere else but it was rush hour and it was impossible to change lanes in the direction we needed to go - no gaps - and the cars were zipping along. Before we knew it we were on the freeway heading in the direction of home, and not wanting to deal with u-turns, Santini’s it was. We each had a cream soda which is the only soda I will ever drink. It was a tasty meal and a real nice treat. It is not one of our regular drop-in places, but we enjoy it when we go. Santini’s is a sports bar/restaurant but I noticed all the TV screens were frozen. No doubt they will be fixed before the weekend crowd arrives.
I seem to be talking about food a lot but here is something else we made today Saturday, 1/10/26, Chicken and Dumplings.
This is my dear other half’s favorite meal since childhood. The link to the recipe on my blog is here.

The Christmas Tree is still up! I am slower getting it down this year but still enjoying the lights at night. I have been watching Grantchester. It’s about a vicar and policeman who solve crimes in a post-war English village. It’s very well done but let’s just say it’s not like the Hallmark movie channel. I am on the 4th, or maybe the 5th season now and we have our second vicar. Some seasons have been better than others. They are not like my village vicar who used to come around for tea every Thursday night. My mum would cook him a hot meal and dad would give him a tot of whisky later, after his cup of tea. The vicarage was just up the road from where we lived. The church, where Gregg and I were eventually married, was down in the valley. He would always walk home, stopping in for dinner with various parishioners. We took care of him on Thursday evenings and always enjoyed his company. Nice young chap! As for Grantchester, this seems to be a good season and I am totally invested in all the characters.
I see the star is leaning over. I will get the tall one to straighten it for me tomorrow. He will be over for his usual Sunday visit. Then next week I will start taking the ornaments down. I will miss them!
We had a lovely chat with my brother-in-law in Germany today (Saturday, 1/10/26). Never get off the phone in under an hour and we always enjoy our chats. I see you over there have had a lot of bad weather. Brother-in-law told me that Cornwall has had a bit of a time of it. Anyhow, I hope wherever you live, that all is well.

Thanks for visiting, thanks for reading and I hope you all have a wonderful Sunday.

  4. Dear Denise, that was a great trip! It's a shame there weren't any benches; we need some too! It's interesting what you all eat at your restaurants!
The spaghetti and chicken soup looked delicious!
Yes, we had a snowstorm and a cold snap today, and it's supposed to stay that way until tomorrow, then everything will calm down again.

  5. I'm hoping to make at least one of these delicious recipes. I love cream soda as well. I have some bottles here now. A cream soda float with vanilla ice-cream is really good too.

  10. Enticing meals!
We are about to put our tree away, fully decorated for the second year. It worked well last year and wasn't covered in dust and cobwebs. Getting lazier by the day!

  12. Sue has de-Christmasfied our place, and the neighbour guy took his big yard display down yesterday.

I understand that Grantchester is in its final run. Due to lack of PBS, I haven’t kept up with the past few seasons. It was always just an alright series for me.

    1. Good for Sue! All the neighborhood decorations have disappeared from the gardens now :) I am up to season 8 on Grantchester, still enjoying the characters. We are about to welcome the third vicar. I have seen shows I enjoy more but still find this entertaining, though I gave myself a bit of a break.

  13. Denise you and Gregg know how to make each and every moment of your days extra special and filled with lots of love, fun and OMword food.
I say enjoy your tree. I still have battery operated candles on the hearth and other places in the house. Very nice on long cold winter nights.

  14. I enjoyed reading about the Vicar that came to visit on Thursdays when you were growing up, Denise. We watched the Grantchester series this past fall since we'll be visiting the little village just outside of Cambridge come March of this year, Lord willing. We're looking forward to seeing the church and visiting a tea room there. All the food you showed here looks delicious! Happy Sunday and Monday!

  15. Lots of good food there! I have a small wooden structure with a fake garland and lights. That has not made its way to the basement yet. It's so small it doesn't seem to matter. I haven't heard of Grantchester.

  17. that pasta looks good. Lemon and spinach pasta -- can't beat it. The day at Manassas and after sounds fun too. What an interesting spot. I stripped my big tree this afternoon and Rick will take it downstairs for me. A smaller skinny tree with woodland things I didn't get out before will go in its place. I really need the sparkle lights in these dark days. I like Grantchester but I agree on the vicars. I was never fond of number two.. However, number 3, when you get there -- I like him a lot!

    1. That’s great you like Grantchester :) I am a big fan of Robson Green too. He really reminds me of my Dad who had the same job as Robson’s character. He’s wonderful in that role. Truth be told, I have to be in the mood for cooking. Dinner today was Panera Bread’s broccoli and cheese soup from Costco, along with a crusty roll.

  19. We had quite a lot of snow on Friday and it was a stay at home weekend but it rained last night and most of it is now gone. Being in the Midlands and close to the hill we don't tend to get the extremes that other parts of the country get. We are very blessed to live where we do. You have some very pretty ornaments on your tree; Jemims Puddle duck is lovely. I loved Beatrix Potter characters and read all the books as a child.

    1. Would those be the Malvern Hills Beverley? Such a beautiful area! Glad most of your snow has gone. I am always on the look-out for Beatrix Potter ornaments. I have two Jemima Puddleducks, made by different companies and are slightly different sizes. Love them!

  20. Love the add of the lemon. Tim asked for lemon in his noodle dish the other day and I grew up with lemon/cheese together so I wanna make him something like that. So fun. Looks like a good meal, sorry about the traffic lanes. They can get nuts.

    1. It’s a wonderful combination, I love the smell of lemon juice on my fingers too. The only time I remember lemon juice on any of our food when we were kids, was when Mum sprinkled it over our Shrove Tuesday Pancakes, along with the sugar, and I think that was out of one of those lemon-shaped plastic containers. I don’t remember seeing real lemons where I lived. Of course, I could have been living in a goldfish bowl back then. I didn’t really pay too much notice of what was in the greengrocers. I was usually the one who had to stand on the corner looking after the shopping bags :)

  21. All my Christmas decorations are away now but many friends have decided to leave the twinkling lights around mantels, sideboards etc up a little longer. January is a darker colder month and the lights bring cheer.
