Lost by David Wagoner
Stand still. The trees ahead and bushes beside you
Are not lost. Wherever you are is called Here,
And you must treat it as a powerful stranger,
Must ask permission to know it and be known.
The forest breathes. Listen. It answers,
I have made this place around you.
If you leave it, you may come back again, saying Here.
No two trees are the same to Raven.
No two branches are the same to Wren.
If what a tree or a bush does is lost on you,
You are surely lost. Stand still. The forest knows
Where you are. You must let it find you.
Emotional, evocative, exquisite.
ReplyDeleteThank you EC :)
DeleteThank goodness we all know where home is.
ReplyDeleteYes indeed, thank you Valerie:)
DeleteI love, love, love this poem. Have never seen it before. it fits the beautiful photos perfectly and is so true. standing still in the forrest is a favorite thing. but I don't do LOST well.. so it is on a trail in a park, not the REAL forest
ReplyDeleteThank you Sandra, that’s all we need, so long as there are trees :)

ReplyDeleteYou are very welcome Barb, I'm glad it was of some help :)
DeleteAn unusual and beautiful poem about nature. I love the trunks of theses trees in the last picture. They look like River Birch.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to make a note of the River Birch Ginny, glad you enjoyed them.
DeleteA beleza das árvores é não haver duas iguais.
ReplyDeleteUm abraço e continuação de boa semana.

DeletePardon the pun but I’m glad to have found Lost here on your site. Your tree shots are ideal for the prose. I admit I’d probably leave breadcrumbs on an unknown forest trail, however. :)
ReplyDeleteI love puns! Breadcrumbs are always a good idea :)))
