OPTHALMOLOGY APPOINTMENT YESTERDAY - MONDAY, MAY 4TH, 2026

Written yesterday: Gregg and I had back-to-back appointments today. An interesting experience as it was the most thorough eye exam I have ever had, even more so than the one 12 months ago. A new place, great eye doctor and the staff were very nice. We will be going back when needed.

The main reason I went today was that I have been having trouble with an annoying double vision for longer than I care to admit. I have basically been going around with one eye closed and, having trouble walking due to arthritis on top of that, not a good combination. It’s okay if I say, look at my hands close up, but long distance I see two of everything side by side and quite far apart.

I have to get my driver’s license renewed before my birthday in a couple of months, and finally had to admit this wasn’t going to go away on its own. Driving hasn’t been an issue as Gregg does all of it these days, but I want to keep my hand in. Anyhow, Gregg finally dragged me into the place and said he was getting his done and I was getting mine done, no arguments. No argument from me, I had had enough of this.

Apparently I have an astigmatism (Mao Clinic explanation at this link) but was told this could be corrected using a prism lens on my new glasses, which I will get very soon. I also have slight early stage cataracts but don’t need anything done yet. Gregg too but his are a little more advanced and he will need those taken care of soon. We have been told by several family members and friends that their procedures went perfectly.

Unfortunately the eye glasses at this place were over-the-top-expensive, so we will be buying those elsewhere. I rather liked the pair in my photos above, especially the ones top left. Very snazzy!

The rest of the day we were at home and we both took a three hour nap. I kept waking up last night, probably thinking about this appointment.

So that’s what we were doing yesterday.

Thanks for the visit and you all take good care of yourselves.

  1. I am so glad your double vision was nothing serious. You had me scared for a bit. I have had cataract surgery on both eyes, piece of cake. The most troublesome part was having to use all the eye drops afterward. The top left look like something out of a fairy tale!

    1. I was relieved. Thank you for telling about your cataract experience. I agree about those glasses, more for show than for purchase :)

  2. Well done for going to the eye doctor; your husband was absolutely right to take you along. Now you know what's wrong! Good luck choosing your glasses, and all the best to your husband for the surgery.

  3. Glad Gregg took you for the eye appointment. At least now you know the cause of the double vision and can get it taken care of.

    1. Hi Angie and thank you. I encourage you to get your eyes checked. I waited too long for this to go away. I also have a family member a lot younger who had quite a serious eye condition and didn’t know about it until their exam. Mine last year gave me a good report but this all happened in the past year. I have a feeling I am a lot older than you are but you will be happy to get it done :)

  8. I don't require glasses at this point in my life after having been required on my license for many decades. They self-corrected somewhat in old age. Of course, they could self-destruct at any moment. I do worry when I get that shimmering on the edges.

    1. That happened to Gregg. All of a sudden, he didn’t need glasses after wearing them full time since he was 17. Then a couple of years ago he was told he had mono vision and didn’t need them at all, not even for reading. But sorry to say, his vision has changed and he is now back to glasses. I hope you continue not to need yours :)

  10. Thankful you have an answer and cure for the vision. Glass frames are so $$$$$$$$$$$ add to that special lens YIKES. I hope find a good place with choices you like. I recall when my inlaws had cataract surgery in the 1980's they had to lie flat on their backs for about 24 hours. Not any more so happy for modern medicine

  11. Keep up your driving. My uncle drove everywhere and my aunt pretty much gave it up. Now my uncle has vision problems and she is too afraid to get behind the wheel. It is causing them so many problems.

    1. Thank you Hena, and that's good advice :) I think something like this happening is in the back of my mind, so you have echoed my thoughts. My mother was too nervous to drive also and was quite happy to be chauffeured everywhere. Dad always remained healthy fortunately, but we can never count on these things. Best to be prepared.

  12. It is always so important to have our eye sight tested and indeed our eyes examined.
A family member recently had her cataracts sorted ... she was a little apprehensive but overjoyed with the result.
    Take care and keep driving.

    All the best Jan

  14. Gosh, you're pretty patient with your eyeballs. I've had "stigmatism" all my life so I'm picky about my lenses. I was very near-sighted as a child, which can cause the need for cataracts to be done in your 50s. It was a breeze with a jillion eye drops but important. As an RN I had 3 hospital patients with major infections who didn't do their eyedrops correctly after cataract surgery. I chose a fixed, single focus replacement lens and my current glasses are much thinner. I actually don't need the top distance part, but I didn't want just reader glasses. My Mom kept misplacing hers all the time. Sometimes after the first eye is done, it's easier to pop out the lens from your old glasses. You wait a week or two, and then have the 2nd eyeball done. If you don't get queezy, watch a YouTube video of the procedure; kinda cool how they roll the new lens into place and unfurl it. Keep driving! You'll have places to see! Linda in Kansas

    1. Thanks Sandie, I appreciate that. I have been back and forth for regular doctor appointments, had different procedures done and they always said things were okay, and to go to get my eyes checked. The first eye appointment they gave me a glowing report and said my eyes were okay but to go back if the double vision didn’t go away. I have always been a slow healer, it runs in my family so I kept hoping it would clear up by itself. It didn’t so when I went to this doctor she gave me a more thorough exam and found out what the problem was. It was a much longer process and I didn’t think I was ever going to get out of there but very much worth the time and effort to finally get a diagnosis.

  18. I am glad you got answers, and will get corrective lenses. Larry will have cataracts removed later this year, too. Most people say the change in their vision is amazing. I have an eye exam scheduled in June. It has been many years since I have had one, so it is past time.

  19. Top left glasses are very snazzy. I got two pairs of glasses at Costco for the price I used to pay for one pair at a fancy shop. That is a fun treat to have 2 different pairs. That is good your vision will be corrected with the new glasses.

  23. I've had astigmatism for most of my adult life. It mainly kept me from driving at night. When I had cataract surgery a few years ago, I was able to get corrective lenses ... they were not covered by insurance, but the choice was good.
I can drive at night again and my vision [except for reading] is much better.

The eye surgeon put antibiotics in the eye during surgery so there was no need for drops afterward which was nice.
Glasses are soo damned expensive. I'm going to see if they will use my old frames.

    1. Thank you for telling me about your own eye experiences Val. I'm learning a lot thanks to you and other blogging friends. I've noticed that I am very sensitive to light and even my sunglasses aren't doing their job. Maybe I need to pay more for those too. This doctor did say that I should be using sunglasses all the time when out and about. I will have to invest in those too.

  25. I have astigmatism too so still need to wear post-cataract glasses. When I had double vision this spring (did they give you an answer?), I learned it was medication reacting. But I was wearing a patch on the one eye because it was downright scary when driving! I hope you are straightened out. Try Costco if you have one near. I had heard good recommendations (including from my ophthalmologist) and was pleased at the inexpensive frames. I saved a LOT and have been thrilled with my glasses.

    1. Thanks Ginny, my problem was due to the astigmatism and not medication related. I can't imagine you driving with a patch, that must have been scary too. We are going to Costco tomorrow so thank you for adding your opinions on getting glasses from them. I have heard other good things too.

  26. Double vision can't be much fun, so it's good that it's being dealt with. I was told years ago that everyone develops cataracts eventually - it's one of the medals we earn for living . . .

  29. Used to work in an Opticians years ago. Enjoyed it. Hit 41 and developed a cataract in my left eye. Got checked for so many illness and all came back negative. Was an aggressive cataract and formed quickly. Got my operation the same day the Queen died, so I remember that. Right eye is fine, just normal age-related issues...need bright light for reading small print. I have glasses for small print but right can handle it. What I find it tough with is the left eye going from distance to near and near to distance quickly. It takes time and usually involves covering one eye at a time for a few seconds. They still cannot tell me why I had it in one eye at such a young age and my right being fine.

The funny thing...most, if not all, of my injuries and issues are on my left side.

    1. Thank you for writing all this down Ananka, that's fascinating and I am so sorry you had all those problems with your eyes, and then breaking your ankle. I'm curious and wondering if you are left-handed or right-handed, and is there a connection? I don't know why I thought about that, just popped into my head as these things do, lol! So glad you are recovering.

  31. One of my daughters has prisms in her glasses, and I fear I might need them at some point. So far the ophthalmologist doesn’t think they would help me. I’m not going to get anything done until I know for sure that my left eye has recovered from the cataract surgery that I had a year ago. Had a lot of trouble with it at first.
