we were out bright and early that morning and were off to Costco to pick up my prescription (prism) glasses, which will fix my double vision. I went to the ophthalmologist a few weeks ago, which I mentioned on here at the time. I was told I had an astigmatism.

ON MONDAY...
We had momentarily forgotten that it was Memorial Day and Costco was closed. No matter, we decided to go shopping. Driving out of the neighborhood we saw a few houses decorated with flags and banners. This was one of them. On the way to the supermarket, we stopped at a traffic light and this dog very kindly posed for me.
He was definitely showing me his best side.
and was momentarily curious about us.
A few days ago we had glorious skies and I was interested in this cloud formation...to me it looks like someone is lying back on a deck chair.
But the skies have been more like this lately.
For years we used to pass this old house, and it had been empty for as far back as I can remember. It had seen better days. One day when we drove by, there was fencing all around. We realized its days were numbered. Not long after that it was bulldozed.
They have been building this ever since. It's for people to rent personal storage spaces. There are another two similarly designed buildings nearby, one right next to it and another not too far behind. We are still in our decluttering stage at home, and this place always reminds me, we need to get cracking on that again.
Gregg got his linguiça (pronounced "leen-GWEE-sah) from Harris Teeters on our shopping expedition. We don't have it all the time, but I found a recipe for smoked sausage, cabbage and potato cooked in a slow cooker. I asked him if he would like to try it, as a potato and cabbage combo are a favorite dish of his. His mom used to cook it for his birthday meal when he was young, but with a boiled ham. He's not a big fan of smoked sausage and the only time we ever go to this particular supermarket is when he gets a yen for linguiça. I will use it in this recipe. We can't find it anywhere else around here.
It's a Portuguese sausage that is a real nostalgia item for him. He remembers when he visited relatives in New England. His mother's family used to fix it - very popular up there - and when relatives from that area visited, they would always bring a batch for the family. Gregg's step-grandfather was of Portuguese heritage. I only met him once, not too long after we were married. He passed away and I didn't get the chance to meet him again. I took to him right away, a dear man. Wonderfully gracious and kind in nature. He was a true gentleman, everyone loved him including me.
Added this the next day (26th). Up early again and were at Costco’s at opening time. We were still third in line to see the lady at the eye-glass department. After 20 minutes she handed me my eye glasses that I had ordered. I didn’t want bifocals/trifocals as the last time I was never able to get used to them, and as at this stage I am worried about falling, I splurged and bought three pair. I now have reading, distance and sunglasses, all prescription and prisms.
I was very nervous but she gave me the long distance ones first. I put them on and my double vision disappeared immediately. I just about clapped my hands. It sounds dreadful but I have been living with this double vision for a year. At first I was waiting for it to get better. It took a while for me to go to my doctor, but eventually admitted to myself it definitely wasn’t going away. I did have my eyes checked by another ophthalmologist in the beginning, as I already had a regular appointment. I can’t remember what he said about my double vision, after just getting the usual things done. Everything else was tested. He suggested going to my regular doctor if it didn’t get any better.
Many appointments at the doctor afterwards, it was off to an ophthalmologist who was more local. She was amazing, looked so very young, was incredibly thorough, softly spoken and the kind of professional who puts you at your ease immediately (you can see the post about that visit here). She diagnosed the astigmatism after looking at all the results.
I will take photos of the new glasses soon. They have boring frames and maybe I should have spent more time with frame designs, but I didn’t hang around and wanted out of there.
Anyway, a little bit of a ramble today.
Thanks for visiting and I hope
your day is a great one.

Thank you so for taking the time to leave a comment. I enjoy reading them very much and always try to return a visit. As I do monitor comments it may take a while for them to appear, even quite late depending on what is going on and how much time I am able to spend on the computer.
I appreciate all who look at my blog, but I will not be publishing any businesses. If you are only able to publish anonymously, would you sign your name, and leave an addy so I can return your visit where possible? Thank you!

You have a nice photo of the building that was.
ReplyDeleteIt's good to get glass so you can see correctly, I too have astigmatism but can see very well without glass on for distance. I've just got one pair of glass and mostly use them to read, Denise.
Thank you Margaret, up until this problem with my double vision, the only time I wore glasses was for reading. I had very good vision for seeing in the distance, up until a year ago. My double vision wasn't a problem if I looked at my hands or things that were close to me. It was when I looked in the distance that my double vision became a problem, so I couldn't drive for instance. If I looked at my two guys on the couch a few feet to my right, I saw four of them. It was most peculiar. The same would happen to my left but looking down at my hands, no problem. I am going to get my driver's license before my birthday. It will be good to be able to drive again.
DeleteI’m so happy for you that your eyesight is good again—it’s great that you went to the eye doctor.
ReplyDeleteThat photo of the sky is lovely, though the others look like rain clouds—mind you, I’d be glad if it would finally rain here!
That dog is so cute!! The buildings are interesting. Everything you shared was fascinating!
I wish you a wonderful day! Hugs, Elke
Thank you dear Elke :) much appreciated and I am happy you enjoyed my post. I wish you a wonderful day also. Hugs, Denise
DeleteHave a beautiful day my friend. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteThank you dear Regine, the same to you. Hugs Denise :)
DeleteSo that building is for storage places? Interesting. Here the storage lockers look like long rows of connected garages.
ReplyDeleteGlad you were able to get your new glasses and that's super that they helped so much. What a relief it must be to have them take away the double vision.
Thank you Ann, I am a happy camper today. Yes, it was a big relief. We have those building styles too. In fact, as we look across to that large storage facility being built, to our right is another that you described. This is very much smaller than the new one across the street.
DeleteThree pairs of glasses - you're well set up now. What a relief.
ReplyDeleteThe sausage dish sounds very tasty.
I certainly am and it was a big relief. I am looking forward to making this new recipe today.
DeleteAs long as the glasses help you see correctly, it's fine to have some boring frames. I actually always choose the same boring one. Just want to get in, get done and out. LOL
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree more Angie. I've never been a fashion-plate, and that goes for eye ware too. Functional is all I care about at this stage of my life :) Your last sentence fits me to a 't' :)
DeleteIn general, I like those young medical professionals. I figure that they are au courant with the very latest knowledge and technology. I suppose one should weigh that against experience, but at the speed of development these days familiarity with older methods and equipment is often no longer valid.
ReplyDeleteI have never had any complaints about them and in fact have nothing but good things to say. I agree with you about them being up-to-date on things.
DeleteI'd rather have boring frames but I've had eye issues since I was born so they are just another tool for me.
ReplyDeletePrism glasses must have come a long way since the time I first saw them!
I've heard of the word prism but not in relation to eye ware. I expect they have come a long way and we've only seen the tip of the iceberg. Totally agree on your comment on the boring frames Val.
DeleteYou had me looking up linguiça just before you defined it. Silly me. I seem to be the one in my little family who likes sausages. I don’t know what’s wrong with people. Way to go with the glasses!
ReplyDeleteI think our Wegmans has every kind of sausage available except for British Bangers and linguiça. I get our occasional British Bangers from a British shop in Vienna (Virginia), and Harris Teeters has the linguiça. (I added its pronunciation in my post.) I grew up on British Bangers for weekend breakfasts and still enjoy them. A variety of other sausages we can get everywhere else are too highly spiced for me. Do you like spicy? Thank you on the way to go, appreciate that :)
DeleteWe've had a lot of that rain too. Hope you can get those glasses soon and they help you see. I think that dog is (at least party) one of those Japanese Shibu Ina dogs. They remind me of when I visited Japan with my school. We were eating breakfast at a window table in our hotel. A man walked by with his Shibu Ina who was a cutie. Somehow we made eye contact and he stopped and showed us his dog. That made us all smile. Thanks for bringing back that memory to me and making me smile this morning Denis.
ReplyDeleteWell, first of all, how wonderful that you visited Japan. I am very happy to have brought that delightful memory of the gentleman and his Shibu Ina :) I can put myself right there and would have been delighted too. Dogs - animals in general I think - can bring about the most wonderful moments in time. I am very happy I bought this one back to you.
DeleteHello Denise,
ReplyDeleteI love the cute doggie at the car window. You reminded me I should be getting my eyes checked. Our vision is so important. Take care, enjoy your day!
He is adorable, isn't he? Happy to remind you that you need to get your eyes checked Eileen. Very important as you say. You take care and enjoy your day also :)
DeleteI have astigmatism too but never experienced double vision.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing that Marcia, I didn't realize you could have this and not get the double vision. I thought it was an automatic given and now I know :)
DeleteThe cloud does look like someone reclining. The sausage is new to me. I'm betting it's good. I need to make an a appointment with the eye doc.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sandra, glad you saw it too in that cloud. I'll share the sausage recipe on one of my Monday Morning Recipe posts sometime. I'm glad you are going to make an eye appointment :)
DeleteLovely dog!
ReplyDeleteThank you Anne, I thought so too :)
DeleteGreat photos and lovely dog :-D
ReplyDeleteHappy you think so Ananka, thank you :)
DeleteDenise,'
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your visits and your very kind words which I truly do appreciate....Love the banner with the eagle on it, sweet dog and I think the cloud formation looks like a flag waved in the breeze....Glad to hear your eye sight will be corrected....I go to a Geriatric opthalmologist as I have cataracts that I will probably need taken care of next year... She is young too with 4 kids...I love to see what other people buy and watch people share their hauls on You Tube.... Have a great week!!
Hugs,
Deb

You are very welcome, I enjoyed my visit immensely :) I like your take on that pretty cloud formation. I think cataract surgery will be in my future as they said I have the start of them but don't need anything done yet. Seeing what other people buy is a lot of fun and it gives me some great ideas. You have a great weekend too Deb, hugs, Denise
DeleteOH boy Denise you will now be able to see with the vision of Superman.
ReplyDeleteCute pup. Our route to get our hair cut is thru one of the first subdivisons in Raleigh back in the 1960's. So many ranch and split level homes are being replaced with Mega Mansions on the same size lot they. They make the original homes around them look like Monoply pieces
Hugs cecilia
Now that would be amazing :))) I hope you enjoy your hair cut. What you describe is happening here too. Some people are buying the land, leveling the old homes and building those mega mansions. I often wonder what people think living next to one of those things. They have probably lived in their homes their whole lives, some of them at least. Hugs, Denise
DeleteMy plans changed for the day, so I am blogging after all. I was going to ask to see your glasses. I have two pair. They are regular and computer. I love Costco for glasses! These big rental storage buildings; they are building them everywhere!! Several new ones here, and we live in a small city. I have never heard of this kind of sausage, no wonder it is hard to find. I have such bad astigmatism that one doctor told me it could make my retina detach. But I have never had double vision. I am glad yours was only that you needed new glasses.
ReplyDeleteGreat to see you Ginny :) I will share the glasses soon. It's the sunglasses I am interested in now, as I have never worn the kind that turns dark in sunlight. They do have a very nice selection. It would be interesting to find out if there are any other parts of the States where this sausage is sold. I believe there is a large community of Portuguese people who moved into New England a few generations back but don't quote me on that. I should do more research. That's interesting about your doctor telling you that astigmatism could cause a detached retina.
DeleteOh, hallelujah, Denise! I'm so happy to read that your double vision has been fixed. Whew! Enjoy your new views!!
ReplyDeleteHallelujah indeed Ellen and thank you so much. I certainly will :)
DeleteGlad you got your new glasses
ReplyDeleteThank you Christine, I appreciate that :)
DeleteYay for your new glasses. Must we wonderful to able to see clearly.
ReplyDeleteYay indeed, thank you so much Hena :) it certainly is!
DeleteHurrah with the new glasses. I get new hearing aids tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteThank you Latane, and hurray for your new hearing aids too :)
DeleteSo pleased you got your new glasses and are happy with them.
ReplyDeleteAs Ellen said ... enjoy your new views :)
All the best Jan
Thank you Jan, it certainly makes a big difference! I haven't gotten over the novelty of them yet. Just amazing what can be done these days :) All the best to you too, Denise
DeleteLindo perrito. Te mando un beso.
ReplyDeleteGracias, era un perrito encantador :) Te mando un beso.
DeleteThere is nothing more wonderful than being able to see clearly. Glad that has happened. And if you need three pair you need three pair.
ReplyDeleteWe used to have a Harris Teeter here - I miss it.
Yes, Gregg always jokes with me that I am a cheap date but not so cheap this time I told him, even though we got a much better deal at Costco :) We don't go to it that often, Harris Teeter, as our other supermarkets are much closer. It's a great store. I'm sorry yours left.
DeleteWe tried to go to Costco on Memorial Day too! Ah well! Good for them, I guess, and their employees. I'm so glad you got your glasses and are pleased with them. Three cheers for only seeing single vision!
ReplyDeleteFortunately, we figured it out before we went there. I often think they should be less packed on holidays, because of everyone being where they've got to be, but last minute things need to be taken care of I guess :)
DeleteSo glad that the glasses are good to go. Very important that we take care of ourselves, and that's why I'm doing all this mouth work. It's well overdue. I remember back in the day also getting a good deal on Costco glasses. Good to read they're still doing that.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ivy and agree with you 100%. Very glad you are getting yourself taken care of too with your dental issues. We were a lot happier at Costco’s prices, and the lady who helped us was wonderful!
Deletewe have these type storage units every where here. they put them up almost overnight. they even turned part of our mall that closed into one. and old shopping center was turned into one next to home Depot and they put out 100 poor people living in a mobile home park from the 60's, they rented the old trailers cheap. the owners sold it and the gave all 100 people 30 days to find a place and of course could not. bull dozed the whole park and built a 4 story storage . glad you got the glasses, and happy you can see now. my sight is very important to me
ReplyDeleteHi Sandra, it’s amazing how fast these buildings go up! Clever turnaround with the old shopping center. Oh dear on all those people being evicted though. I have heard of old motels/ and hotels being empty for years. It’s a pity they can’t be put up in those places. It would go a long way to solving and helping the homeless. Thank you on the glasses, they certainly took care of my double vision problem.
