DRIVING AROUND THE OTHER DAY...

we found ourselves on a road we rarely frequent. It was like driving along it for the first time. I am always interested in the architecture of the various homes we see and I took a few photos. Some were quite big, some quite small and others falling down. There were a couple of churches.

It was a pretty blue sky that day as you can see. Below I didn't get the whole building into frame. I changed the settings on my cell phone which made them narrower. I thought I would get more of a panoramic look to my photos but didn't take into account I needed to be further back from places. I took this while driving along on the passenger side and couldn't stop because of the traffic following us. I kept missing bits!

The abandoned places, once someone's dream home, always interest me. I wonder who the people were, when was this built? What kind of lives did their occupants have, happy ones hopefully.

Here is a closer view.

And then we get places like this.

and a very English looking home that could have been near the village I originally came from, except that it would have been an all-white exterior with those black beams.

I had a very enjoyable time looking at all the different places.

This was the last photo. I took others but they came out not so good, blurry, cut off in places. I'm glad I got these as we weren't able to stop once, just kept clicking and I straightened a few.

It is 75°F (24°C) on May 6th, 2026 and a bit rainy but I am happy for the extra warmth. Gregg is with our son. I decided to stay home today. We are going off to Costco tomorrow to look at glass frames. I'm looking forward to that. Yes, I'm excited to go to Costco and I see the humor, but I do like looking around that place. I won't get much further than the eye department. By the time we finish in there I will be glad to get home, which always seems to be the way these days. I am eager to get my corrective lenses though.

I hope you are all having a good week so far,
and thanks for visiting.

  1. Dear Denise, you’ve taken photos of such pretty houses—and the church, too! It’s a completely different style than what we have here. I really like them as well, and it looks like you had such lovely, warm weather.
I hope you have lots of fun picking out a new pair of glasses!
    Hugs, Elke

    1. I am very happy you like them dear Elke. It is always interesting to see the styles from country to country. I enjoy those in your part of the world too, and when I have visited my family who live in the Black Forest. The weather is turning warmer here I am happy to say. I hope yours has too. Thank you, still in the process of picking glasses but should get there soon :) Hugs, Denise

  2. I hope you will show us your new glasses. And maybe even compare them to the old ones. The first church is so pretty!! And the rundown little house is so hidden! I would love to know who lived there.

    1. I will as soon as I get them Ginny and a good idea to compare. I will remember that. These old buildings are always very interesting. Even the big homes that are brand new that we see, I will say I wonder who lives there.

  3. I live in New England and love the churches in the center of town with the tall steeples that can be seen for miles

  5. I completely understand that fascination with abandoned houses. You can’t help but look at a sagging porch or a broken window and try to "fill in the blanks" of the Sunday dinners and busy mornings that used to happen there. It’s a bit bittersweet, but there’s a quiet beauty in how nature starts to take those places back.

  7. Costco is always quite the spectacle, so getting spectacles shouldn’t be a problem.

  9. There is such interesting diversity in the architecture. It is always a bit sad to see the small cozy homes, once fresh and full of hope, abandoned and/or not cared for.

    1. I love old barns too but didn't get far enough into the countryside to see any. We had some rain thanks and now the area is so nice and green. All lush new and green leaves everywhere. I love this time of the year. Thank you Cecilia, hugs Denise

  13. These are lovely back lanes to travel through, I’d have enjoyed being in the back of your car looking out the window. Costco is an adventure! I am not a member but sometimes go along with a friend. Always fun!

  14. Oh, my I am like that with Sam's - a place like Costco. I want to go then I get there and it is too big. I also do the same thing - I go on a trip, and we pass house upon house and I think of all the people there are in the world, and I will never meet them.

    1. There's a Sam's not too far from our Costco. We thought of joining that too but thought we'd bite off more than we could chew with both memberships :) They have a good reputation. It's fun to drive around isn't it? Thanks Sandie!

    1. That's a great idea, the only time I think about going out at night is when it's Halloween or Christmas time to see the decorations. You have sown a seed Debbie. I saw a few new eyeglasses that I liked at the doctor's office :)
