ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND - MURALS

This was one of my two favorite murals I saw that day. I am sure I missed many but before I go again, I will find out where they are.

This is at the entrance of the US Naval Academy.

The ships were on the wall hidden by the car.

Veering away from murals for a minute, on the grounds of the academy is the statue of a goat, which is the United States Naval Academy Mascot. Its story on how it was chosen as the mascot can be read here.

The following murals were in various places heading home but on the outskirts of town, in a more industrial area.

The next four photos of a mural painted on a wall, were done by local teenagers and they called it 'The Garden of Inclusion.' I couldn't find much about it except for a fleeting glimpse of a local newspaper article, before a pop-up appeared blocking everything and asking that I buy a four-month subscription to read it. I didn't want to do that so let it be.

"Tener Felizidad" according to google translate means "Have Happiness".

It must have been done some time ago as it seemed worn and faded.

There were good messages painted all along that wall, such as "Be Happy" and "Nosotros Somos" - "We Are".

This was very nice but hard to photograph for one complete photo.
I missed a panel, but this was at the end and was my other favorite.

A mural map can be found here of the following.

There is a YouTube at this link explaining the art, and these murals are seen.  I looked for ID and didn't find them all. This one of the young girl below is called "Girl & Angler Fish", by artist Vermelho. It can be found on the Capital Teas HQ building.

I didn't know this until searching online for info on the murals, that we were actually in the Annapolis Design District, in an industrial area bounded by West Street, Chinquapin Round Road, Legion Avenue and Forest Drive. The photo below is a painting of a fox.

What I found: "Brazilian-born artist Roberta Pardo, is the force behind this particular mural collection. Roberta, an Arundel County resident, created Urban Walls Brazil, an arts residency program that brings young, international street artists to Annapolis.

Thanks for looking and I hope your week has started well.

  4. Murals certainly do have the ability to enliven dull spaces, and convey messages too. Thanks for sharing these examples.

  6. There was a time before murals become popular. I find myself wondering when the change occurred, but it’s good that it did. I don’t think urban areas have billboards anymore, or not to the same degree as they once did.

    1. I'll have to look up the history of them AC. I guess graffiti came first and it evolved maybe? Billboards were a big part of our travels at one time. Always fun to see what they were advertising when we got up close enough to read them :)

  11. I wonder if the murals are a new thing. We lived there once and there were no murals but heck, that was back in the dark ages so anything and everything changes over time.

    1. We did and many more I wasn't able to take :) Couldn't get a direct line on that building mural as there was only a narrow road and obstructions on the other side.

    1. Thanks Ivy! I got the idea to ask Google about it. This is what it said:

The mural on the front wall of Third Eye Comics in Annapolis, MD, is called "FLOAT: From The Deep" and was created by artist Matt Corrado. It features a large, detailed depiction of a Kraken-like creature with an octopus-like head and a skull-like face, inspired by the creature from the classic horror film Creature from the Black Lagoon." I am going to ask Google first before I start doing a deep dive. This took seconds to get this information.

    1. Me too, I've enjoyed them from the west to the east coast on our travels. I wish I had thought about taking more photos. Yes, exuding goodness with their positive messages is an added pleasure to them. They just make you feel good reading them. I agree on those many talented artists Sheri. You have a pleasant November week also my dear friend :)

  18. I guess some artists don't use the best paint so some murals are in decay. You remind me to get out and find some murals here.

    1. Agreed but I'm wondering if this was only supposed to be a temporary mural as I caught a fleeting glimpse of a different one a few years before with no description unfortunately.
