Yesterday was an interesting day here. It rained for most of the day and during the evening we were under a severe thunderstorm/tornado watch. Neither came to anything and I am hoping no one else experienced them either, that they just disappeared up into the sky. The last warning that did any damage around here was years ago when a tornado touched down two miles away, and shaved the front off a lot of homes, along with their roofs. Before then I didn't even know we had that kind of weather in our area. We know how devastating they can be from all the news reports.
Rain or no rain, we decided to go out and get lunch for a change. We know of a Vietnamese sandwich shop called Banh Mi DC Sandwich. It is about 35 minutes away, and we always order the same thing, a Meatball Banh Mi. Gregg discovered it years ago when he worked in Washington DC. It was about half-way home. We don't usually have breakfast on such days, and eat lunch early-ish. We arrived here before noon. There is no sit-down area inside, which is fine as we always have a car picnic in the parking lot. The sandwich is consistently excellent and in all the years we have been coming here, we have never been disappointed. It is in a shopping area and the parking lot is filled with cars, but we always get a space in front of the sandwich shop as people are aways coming and going.

I rarely post on the weekend, but this is a wonderful cause and I wanted to share it with you today.
I was glad and surprised to see a post from you today. What a great thing this place is doing. Both Phil and I used to work in D.C.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ginny, I may not do them every Saturday but I'm glad you enjoyed seeing this one :) That's interesting about you both working there. Washington DC is a beautiful city. I have been there many times over the years. The Smithsonian Museums are incredible!

ReplyDeleteYes, but this made me very reflective on how we can eat when so many go hungry. We do donate when we are able to.
DeleteWe are having the same thing here right now. There is a huge fire quite a ways from Corpus burning some 4600 acres of brush area. Firefighters and volunteers are being fed by such as yours.

How awful about the fire Anni. I hope it has been put out by now (it's the 6th as I write this). Good to hear about the firefighters and volunteers being taken care of. We owe them our never-ending thanks. A work colleague of Gregg's took him to a Vietnamese restaurant before we moved here over 30 years ago. He couldn't wait to take us there and even our son took to it straight away. He was ten at the time.

It is so nice to hear good news instead of bad, with people helping others. we had the same weather you did, threats of storms that never came and drizzly rains off and on and no sunshine. we were hoping for inches or rain but were happy to get what we got

It's pouring down today, no walking today :) There are a lot of good people out there helping others, and it's heartwarming to hear about them after all that goes on in the news. Jose Andreas is one of many whom I greatly admire for all the work he is doing right now.
DeleteAfter our tornado in 2020 and then another in Dec. 2021, here in TN we get nervous when that T word is mentioned. Glad all is well.

ReplyDeleteThe community kitchen is a great idea. I had never heard the term "food insecure" before so I went looking to see exactly what it meant. I read an interesting article on the food insecure hoax. It basically said that the standards for determining food insecurity are a bit out of whack.
Forgot to take one this time Ann :) Next time I go I will try and remember. Interesting about that article. Too bad about the few bad apples when there are so many good people out there trying to put food on their table.
