More from the archives. This is a sight you will often see in Yellowstone. First you notice the line of cars slowing down, and then the focus of their attention becomes apparent.
In this case it was a Bison ambling nonchalantly up the road. Sometimes they will be right in the middle or like this beauty, considerately making his way along the side.
When taking photos we pulled into a parking lot with several other people. As you can see he attracted attention. A steady stream of cars went by, open windows, people with cameras pointing in his direction.
Eventually this handsome fellow decided it was time to move on.
There are always some I noticed, who took chances standing a little too close. Our instincts and caution kept us inside our car. We have actually seen how fast they can turn and move in one's direction. Soon a park ranger shows up to make sure that people remember their common sense, encouraging them to stand behind or get back inside their car. The Rangers are always around thankfully, protecting not only us but these beautiful animals.
These encounters are always memorable. We enjoyed seeing other Bison on our days driving around Yellowstone.

by the time I got to the end I was smiling so big it hurt. I would die of joy if I saw this in the road.. LOVE the butt shots... he is pretty awesome stomping along the road..

ReplyDeleteBeautiful bison. I had a bison burger years ago. It was dry and too lean. Cow burger tastes better.
ReplyDeleteWow, you got great pictures! And is that a mom and baby? Silly people, that man was putting himself and his baby in danger. They likely think that Bison can't move that fast because they are so big and lumbering. Not so! They seem to be used to people and are just minding their own business. Guess they are used to it. Splendid post!

Heisann, in Norway we have musk in Dovre National Park, I have never seen them close, but they are enormous, Bison/buffalos must be in family with them????

Hi Denise, wow what a beast, its only when you can compare them such as to the Ranger you get an idea as to the size. Would make a bit of a mess to the car. Regards John
ReplyDeleteWe experienced the same when we visited Yellowstone last year during our holiday. People actually walked towards them even though there were warning signs everywhere.

Fantastic looking animals - don't see them too often in the Uk... Joking aside, I would love to visit Yellowstone. Great shots! Do you know the difference between a buffalo and a bison? - You can't wash your hands in a bison. Sorry...:-)

ReplyDeleteYes, it's better to be safe than sorry. Some people didn't realise it and stand too close. Sometimes they use flash with the camera too

ReplyDeleteNice encounters! We also had many roadside Bison in Custer State Park in South Dakota. Although it was early June, there had already been three attacks of visitors by this large herd. People forget they are wild creatures and even walk right up to them.
