I have been noticing the sunflowers driving out of the neighborhood. Someone had planted a line of them by their letter box. The last time I saw them they weren't blooming. Today there was quite a show, and it was time to take my cell phone out. They made a very pretty sight.
When we got to the DMV, the first thing I noticed was that the parking lot was not overflowing like the times I have been there before. There were many empty spots. I was surprised how quiet it was. When we got inside and signed in, I was still filling out the form they gave me when I was called. We were in and out under 15 minutes. My Real ID license will arrive in the mail. I can't remember how long he said, hopefully under two weeks. In the meantime I was given an official sheet of paper which will act as a temporary one. We noticed a sign at the counter letting us know we could have done all this online, which is probably why it was so quiet, maybe.
Our next stop was at Wegmans. I had a notice a few days ago to say I was due for my second shingles shot. No appointment is needed, you just walk in and wait your turn, which usually isn't very long.
I sat myself down next to this very nice couple about our age. They were also waiting in the small sitting area. The man heard me and said, "You must be from Texas?" I looked at him and answered with a big smile, "I'm from England." He said he knew that and assured me he was joking. Ah, a comedian! He, his wife and I had a chuckle. After 50 years you can still tell where I came from originally. I'm always surprised when people acknowledge my accent. I do have a different one compared to how I used to sound. I think I have mentioned before that when I have gone back to the UK, people think I am Canadian.
The man played a guessing game as to where I was from. Not from Wales, he said, not from Scotland, he said. You did say England right? Not from the North, and then the Pharmacist opened the door, and they got up and as they went into her office I told him I grew up near Birmingham, but moved to Devonshire when I was 15. He nodded sagely as he disappeared out of sight. They saw them again a few minutes later. Gregg had joined me. We had another short conversation about the man's time in England. He had been over there working for a while. It was a very nice conversation.
When we joined the pharmacist she had heard my chat with the couple. After I received the shot, she told me she had vacationed in the UK with an aunt who lived in Reading. This was when she was young and remembered what a great time she had at a rock concert. I should have asked her whom she saw. I told her that when I flew into Heathrow, I would go to Reading to catch the train down to Devon. She was lovely and great at doing her job. I hardly felt a thing.
Gregg told me later he noticed a sign showing an award that Wegmans received, for being the best pharmacy in America. I can believe it. We have never had anything but the best service here and every pharmacist has been very professional and friendly. Most importantly, all the inoculations received have been painless. I was glad to get home, however, and found myself dozing off for a few minutes.
I had a chuckle. These photos were taken in seconds as they heard Gregg’s voice calling them. He exited via the garage door in the front of the house, had already told me not to open anything, even though I badly wanted to fuss them. Last time they slipped through a crack, and one followed the other before I could blink an eye. After remembering the last time, good sense prevailed.
Gregg said they were fast as lightning. They wouldn't listen to him and made their way further down the street to the corner house. Soon after, their human turned up and said to Gregg, "They got out again?" He apologized but Gregg told him don't worry, we love them. We do, but at the same time we’re glad they are now safely back in their own garden.

What a great idea for using up the bananas!
ReplyDeleteIt’s lovely that everything worked out so well. I also had a conversation with an older man about where we come from; we compared notes because he was from a completely different part of the country and—just like me—found a home here.
The dogs are so sweet; those two rascals clearly adore you!
The sunflowers are so beautiful—and there are so many of them! It’s going to be 22 degrees here today, too, and then the real heatwave hits!
Have a wonderful day! Hugs, Elke
Thank you Elke. I sometimes use them up by making banana bread but I wanted to make something a little lighter. It is the first time I have used them for 'ice-cream' :) How lovely that you had your own conversation with the man and which part of the country you both came from. And you ended up living in the same area. Thank you for sharing that :) Rascals, a good word for them but totally adorable. Stay cool in your heatwave, and you have a wonderful day also. Hugs, Denise
Deletewow, everything went so smoothly for you at the pharmacy and the DMV. Usually the DMV here is terribly crowded. You got great photos of the labs, they look like they are still puppies. They sure do like the both of you!
ReplyDeleteIt did and a surprise that it all went so well. This is the first time I haven't been in the DMV where we haven't had to wait for half an hour or more. Those puppies like everybody I think :) I could adopt them, only wish. I'm afraid my days of owning a pup are not realistic but I could look after any when my son and daughter-in-law decide to a adopt one. They have talked about it.
DeleteWe had our flu injections just yesterday for another year.
ReplyDeleteI do love those two dogs that escape from your neighbour once in awile.
Your recipe sounds good, Denise - thank you.
Good for you Margaret, it is very important especially at this stage of our lives. They are easy to love those dogs :) You are very welcome for the recipe and thank you :)
DeleteGreat to get your second shingles shot. I've know coworkers and patients with it and it is a bag thing to endure. Love the goldies; always bouncing around for jolly troubles. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda :) My son and daughter-in-law have a friend who had shingles a long time ago and unfortunately it left them with lasting-nerve damage and he still has to deal with the horrible pain. It made us take serious note and spurred us on to get ours done.
DeleteA quick trip to DMV is to be cherished
ReplyDeleteThat it is and thank you :) that's a good word for it.
DeleteWhat an absolute whirlwind of a productive morning. Getting in and out of the DMV in under 15 minutes feels like winning the lottery, though finding those blooming sunflowers by the neighborhood letterbox sounds like the perfect way to kick off the drive. I loved reading about your chat at the pharmacy. Your banana and Greek yogurt freezer treat sounds delicious and so refreshing for a 72-degree day, especially with the blueberries on the side; I sometimes blend in a spoonful of peanut butter or a handful of dark chocolate chips with that exact mix, which gives it a really great twist if you are looking for new ideas to try next time. I love sunflowers; I think they are the star of summer.
ReplyDeleteHi Melody, it certainly was. I was glad to get home after that morning but felt very good about getting these two important things done. Sunflowers are one of my favorite flowers, always so cheery. You are right about them being the stars of summer. They had bouquets of them at the store, and I wish I had bought one, but I was eager to get home by that time :)Your peanut butter and dark chocolate chips sounds like a delicious addition to this. I love both! I will definitely try it next time.
DeleteHello, Denise
ReplyDeleteIt is nice to have an easy experience at the DMV. I just love the Golden Retrievers, they remind me of my old Daisy and Goldie dogs. The sunflowers are lovely. Take care, enjoy your day!
Thanks Eileen, it was one of the easiest experiences I have ever had at the DMV :) Always a bittersweet memory to see pups that remind us of our own dear pups and yes, the sunflowers were lovely. Glad you enjoyed. You take care and enjoy your day also, or I should say evening as it's quite late as I am catching up on my comments. Happy weekend to you too :)
DeleteThat's awesome that you were in and out so fast at the DMV. Sounds like you had some nice conversations at Wegmans too. How sweet that the dogs come to visit you although I suppose their escape is not much appreciated by their owner. There was a dog around here who was always showing up on Facebook because he was running loose. Apparently he was very good at figuring out how to get free.
ReplyDeleteAll round it was a lovely day to speak to nice people. Yes those were sweet dogs and I'm sure it must be frustrating for them to have a couple of Houdinis on their hands at times :) Just glad that they have made it back safely. We had a dog who could jump a 6 ft fence, used to take a running jump, grab her front legs on the top of the fence, heave her hind legs that had a middle support, and over she went. I remember despairing of trying to keep her contained. I was always worried about her getting lost but she never did. I couldn't figure out how she was getting out of our garden - high fences all around - until I saw her do it with my own eyes :)
DeleteIf people take you for a Canadian that’s a high honour, Marit!
ReplyDeleteIndeed David :)
DeleteDid I just call you Marit? Sorry, Denise!
ReplyDeleteNo problem David, I've done this more times than I can count in the land of blog :)
DeleteInteresting that you can get shingles shot at pharmacist...thought you have to go to your family doctor for that. My mom had shingles two years ago, and it was a hell of pain according to her.
ReplyDeleteWe have had vaccinations at our doctors but more often than not, we go to the pharmacists at our favorite supermarket. We have never had any complaints, they are literally an award-winning pharmacy.
DeleteWell that was an all around good day. Nice to have at least once in awhile. I did make the egg roll in a bowl with ground turkey and bok choi. Wrote about it yesterday. Thansk again for a delicious recipe. Will be a go to one for sure.
ReplyDeleteDenise I cannot leave a comment in comment box. It keeps asking me to prove I'm not a robot...which I do but it doesn't believe me. So I am commenting here under Marcia's comment
DeleteWhat a beautiful way to start a day with a row of happy Sun flowers, they were good luck to you at DMV and at pharmacy for your 2nd shingles shot.
What a fun conversation you had about your lovely accent.
One of my oldest friend's mom is British. I always loved her accent.
Hugs cecilia
Thank you Marcia and that sounds wonderful! :) You're very welcome to the recipe. I am looking forward to seeing yours.
DeleteHi Cecilia, I'm so sorry you had problems and hope that glitch has disappeared by now. I'm not sure why these things happen. I didn't change any settings and this was a complete surprise to me. Much appreciate you persisting and hopefully the cyber gremlins have gone back home. You're so kind and I'm wondering how long your friend's mom has been over here. That's a lovely way of thinking those sunflowers brought me good luck. I will have to remember that :) Hugs, Denise
DeleteAccents make us unique. I'm pleased you have retained enough of yours to be recognisably English. 😉
ReplyDeleteThose dogs are beautiful, but I fear for them if they keep escaping. - traffic, dog-nappers, dog-haters.
Very true, I've always been interested in accents. I'm glad you're pleased I retained mine. It still takes me by surprise when someone mentions it. Everything you said about those sweet dogs, has crossed my mind too. We have had a few lost signs up in our neighborhood, for cats too. I fear the foxes may have had a hand in some of them. I used to hear about coyotes in the area but not for a long while.
DeleteGoldens are such wonderful dogs!
ReplyDeleteThey certainly are and so sweet natured :)
DeleteYour dogs are just adorable and I'm glad they're home safely. I've got to get my shingles and also my Covid booster! Thanks for the reminder.
ReplyDeleteAren't they Jeanie? And I'm glad too :) I'm all up to date on my shots now thankfully, and you are very welcome for the reminder.
Delete"On line" has changed many things in the world.
ReplyDeleteIt certainly has :)
DeleteGorgeous photo Denise, lovely flowers and cute doggies. They look so happy. :-D
ReplyDeleteThe Post Office do the update for the Driving Licence over here which make it easier I think, certainly for me anyway!
Thank you Ananka, they were very happy little doggies :) That's interesting about the Post Office. I'm glad you find it easier. We have always had to go to the DMV but now that we know we can do it online, even easier.
DeleteHow wonderful! I always get a fever , headache and body ache after every vaccination, and two shingles shots had that result. I am glad you didn’t have any side effects. I love those sunflowers! So pretty.
ReplyDeleteThanks Gigi, yes I was surprised I didn't feel any bad side effects. I have a bit of a sore arm but nothing bad. Sunflowers are beautiful aren't they? :)
DeleteGoldens are angels! Mischievous angels. I would make your concoction right now if I had yogurt.
ReplyDeleteThey certainly are, very mischievous angels, lol! :) Glad you liked the sound of my concoction. I'll make it again soon.
DeleteGetting through the DMV so quickly must have been a great surprise. In my neck of the woods it is usually very crowded.
ReplyDeleteThe sunflowers are beautiful, and you got great shots of the doggies. At first I thought they were yours, waiting to get back in.
It was and I was delighted :) It is usually crowded here too so it was a very pleasant surprise. Those funny doggies, I'm glad they hung around long enough for these photos. Because they were gone! No, not mine, I wish.
DeleteWell done on getting your license renewed.
ReplyDeleteLovely line of sunflowers.
The dog are so cute, you got some very nice photographs of them ... such cute rascals :)
I can't believe it's Wednesday!
Have a good end of the week.
All the best Jan
Thank you Jan, I was glad to get that done and crossed off the list :) Happy you enjoyed the rascals and the flowers. I can’t believe it’s Wednesday either. You have a good end of the week too and all the best, Denise.
DeleteBello perritos. Te mando un beso.
ReplyDeleteEstoy de acuerdo, eran unos perritos preciosos :) Te mando un beso.
DeleteOh no. They're back. They are very cute, but I can relate to their speed. You can't turn your back in a minute. And congrats on the short time at the DMV. Even if you could do it online, at least you didn't kill a lot of time.
ReplyDeleteI remember those experiences with our own dog years ago, she was just the same. A second from your sight and away she would go like the wind :) Thanks for the congrats. And very true on your last sentence.
DeleteA great day filled with good conversation, service and a furry visit! Those naughty dogs are sure cute.
ReplyDeleteThank you Ellen, it was a lovely day all round :)
DeleteOur cats are as tricky!
ReplyDeleteI have heard cats can be as tricky Jenn :)
DeleteThose dogs are so cute but I think they are two bundles of furry mischief too.
ReplyDeleteThose sunflowers are so cheery and bright. Mine are still growing and are yet to flower. I shall look forward to their sunny yellow heads appearing.
Interesting conversation with the people at the pharmacy about where you came from originally. I think we always keep a little bit of our accent from early days even if we move far away over the years. My hubby still retains some of his Essex accent. I have never moved far away so my Worcestershire borders accent has stayed the same.
Thank you Beverley, that is a good description of them :) I look forward to seeing photos of your own sunflowers. It's lovely to hear that you and hubby have both retained your Worcestershire and Essex accents. It's so much a part of who we are :)
DeleteAdorable dogs!
ReplyDeleteOh they were, totally :)
DeleteThose pups are too stinkin' cute. Love that you had a great experience at Wegmans. It's been awhile since I've been there. Our location sadly took away a bunch of items I used to get. That's okay though, with gas these days I've been sticking mostly to ALDI but boy oh boy, I did so LOVE Wegmans back in the day. Their produce. Devine.
ReplyDeleteI agree :) I didn’t know you had Wegmans over there Ivy. ALDI is starting to open stores all over the place here. They are very popular but not as close.
