to the two industrious young men - brothers - who turned up yesterday afternoon and asked if they could shovel our driveway. We also asked them if they could do the path up to the front door and around our mailbox and we explain about the thick ice (we stopped our mail until next week, so that our mailman wouldn't have to deal with trying to get to our mailbox and he's such a nice man, he would do that).
As soon as they left, dear other half got the car out and was able to get through the neighborhood okay, stopped off for a few groceries and brought me back a coffee. He was very glad to get out.
There is still not as much room to drive in the neighborhood, as there are big mounds of snow on each side to navigate, but navigate he did. With this storm being so widespread, many of you are probably seeing these same conditions yourselves. At least the parking lots at the stores have been cleared for the most part, and the main roads are clear.
Our weekend forecast: a very cold start with temperatures near 25-30 degrees F (-3.9°C to -1.1°C) for highs and sub-freezing, near-record lows (single digits to teens) through the weekend. The weather remains cold and mostly dry through early next week, with daytime highs gradually rising from the mid 20s to upper 30 degrees F by midweek. Woo-hoo! A heatwave!
Gregg asked if I would like to get a grilled chicken sandwich from one of our fast-food places we go to. I was happy to say yes, and I took a few photos coming back, just to show you what the roads were like.
I was happy to get out so, a big shout out to the two young men who knocked on our door. Also, a big thank you to all those hard-working people who get up in the wee hours to clear our roads. We are very grateful!

What a blessing! We have not had anyone knock at the door yet, which is unusual. It has been 3 degrees! You are both so brave to have ventured out!!
ReplyDeleteHi Ginny, most definitely they were a blessing :) I hope you get some help too very soon. Gregg did his scouting party first and then too me out afterwards. I didn't even have to get out of the car so know fear of slipping on ice anywhere.
Deleteit is so nice to read positive posts about the young people of today, so many of them are really wonderful. our snowblower broke after one pass on the driveway and that was it. no one has come, but they would not even be able to get to the front door, the snow was/is solid ice and still unshoveled. we are just getting too old. a friend of chucks came and got the snowblower and drove it to the shop to get it fixed, they said it would be 2 - 3 weeks. i have not left the house in 10 days, but i am ok, i will really appreciate getting out when i can. i am so happy you had help, and a chicken sandwich. we will not last too much longer before we will have to go for food, i can't have it delivered!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Debbie and it's the reason I like to share these lovely people I come into contact with, in this case these young lads. We also hear about other acts of kindnesses from family and friends. There are a lot of good people out there and that has always given me hope. We are no longer at an age where we are able to do these heavy dig-outs or gardening clean-ups. I think this is way too much for the snowblowers as you found out. By the time you get out and about it will be such a wonderful treat. I felt that way yesterday :) Both of us can occupy ourselves very well and even when housebound are never bored but it sure was nice to take a drive finally. I hope you will be able to soon also.
DeleteOh gosh! I'll bet my daughter wishes those young boys lived next to them in Chicagoland. They've had so much snow and ice too.
ReplyDeleteThank you Kay, it is so cold here the snow and ice aren't going anywhere any time soon :) I hope your daughter and her family are okay and will get someone to help also.
DeleteThat's so sweet of the neighbor boys, and now you can go outside again.
ReplyDeleteYou have so much snow! Great photos, and you got your treat too.
It's -5 degrees here and will stay that way all day, and it's supposed to get even colder overnight tomorrow! More snow is expected.
I wish you a good February and take good care! hugs Elke
Greetings Elke, they certainly were :) Thank you and I'm glad you enjoyed my photos. You have the frigid weather and now more snow. I wish you a good February too and take care, keep warm and safe :) Hugs, Denise
DeleteOdd how something that melts can also seem like cement when trying to shovel it. Thank goodness for youth! People helping people restores faith in mankind.
ReplyDeleteIt's very odd Penelope :) Never ever seen it quite like this. Yes, thank goodness for youth and good people help others. It does restore one's faith in mankind, as you say.
DeleteGod bless those young men, I would love for someone to knock on my door looking for odd jobs.. yikes on the side view of that snow. we did not have wind damage or frozen pipes, it is cold cold cold and 2 more days to fret over the pipes.. not usual for us... glad you could get out and about
ReplyDeleteGod bless indeed Sandra and thank you :) I wish someone would knock on your door, and that your pipes will remain unfrozen and everything and everyone will be safe. Good luck on that extraordinarily cold weather in Florida!
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteIt is nice to have the boy help dig you out. We were blessed our neighbor used his snow blower on our driveway. We did around the car and deck. The ice on top was so thick, it had to be chopped up before we could shovel the snow. Take care, stay warm. Happy February! Have a wonderful week!
It certainly was Eileen and glad you also had help from your neighbor. Thank you and I wish you the same :)
DeleteIt's always wonderful to see young people out there trying to earn a few bucks. I was on my way home from work the one day and saw three young boys walking down the road with shovels. They were obviously out to make money too.
ReplyDeleteIt does feel good to get out after being stuck inside because of the weather.
It is, very much so. They learn responsibility at such an early age. I was just thinking of your description of the young boys walking down the road with shovels, and I immediately thought that would make a great photo, lol! Stay warm and safe Ann :)
DeleteHappy Sunday!
ReplyDeleteAnd to you also Anne, thank you :)
DeleteYou would have been imprisoned in your own home without the help of those two young men. It's good to hear that there are kind, helpful people in the world.
ReplyDeleteWe would have indeed Janice, and I am happy to share about the good and kind young and older people we come into contact with. I also enjoy hearing these stories from other parts of the world also. Just does the heart good, doesn't it?
DeleteHappy February. Love you friend.
ReplyDeleteHello there my dear friend, and a Happy February to you. Love you too Regine :)
DeleteI think you are getting there as long as no more comes. Very good photo at the end.
ReplyDeleteThank you John :) We also had lots of warnings from our son about watching out for the sudden walls of snow. He turned right and the road was just a mountain of snow. Fortunately, not going too fast but we did come across them when we did our own right-hand corner drives, in places at least.
DeleteNice to hear of hardworking young men.
ReplyDeleteI agree Christine, thank you :)
DeleteI am glad you got out…thanks to the neighbor boys.
ReplyDeleteHi Linda and thank you and still thanking those neighborhood boys :)
DeleteFreezing here at 30 degrees this morning. Stay bundled up. Very nice young men.
ReplyDeleteHello my dear friend, they were very nice young men indeed. Very chilly your way too. Thinking of you and wishing you nothing but the best :)
DeleteThanks, and the same to you!
DeleteWhat a God send those young men were! How wonderful. Glad you could get out and about for a little drive and that it was a safe drive for you!!
ReplyDeleteMost definitely Ellen and thank you :)
DeleteTHOSE ARE SOME VERY VERY SPECIAL YOUNG MEN WITH EXTRA SPECIAL UPBRINGING. WARM HUGS
ReplyDeleteCECILIA
Couldn't have said it better Cecilia, Warm hugs to you too :)
DeleteIt's true, it's not so much the snow but where you have to put it!
ReplyDeleteIsn't that the truth? We have mountains of the stuff. As long as it doesn't prove to be too much of a danger, I think they are going to let nature takes its course. I don't know why I said that but it seems to make sense to me :) I just hope we don't get too much flooding :(
DeleteKind, industrious young men! We did not get the snow much of the country did. We just had a typical subzero January, so nothing unusual about that. I'm pleased you were finally able to get out.
ReplyDeleteHi Sandra, they certainly were. Thank you! I've stopped dreaming of spending a winter up north. We have even talked about renting a place but, like near Yellowstone but somehow, at our age, it doesn't seem quite as appealing....lol!
DeleteLots of snow. That's great Denise. When we had bad snow back in 2010 and 2018 we helped the neighbours and shovelled their snow from their house to the car so they could get to their cars easily :-D
ReplyDeleteThanks Ananka, definitely pretty to look at. That's a real sweet thing you did helping your neighbors. They must have appreciated that very much and still sing your praises :)
Deletei have my guy who shows up and does the job and disappears before I see him.
ReplyDeleteThat's real sweet of your guy. Bless his heart! :)
Deleteoops just typed and had it disappear.
ReplyDeleteWell, thank you for the thought Marcia. That has happened to me too :)
DeleteHappy February 1st, dear friend. Spring is on the way....hang on!! Much love, Andrea xoxo
ReplyDeleteHi Andrea and a Happy First of February to you too dear friend :) The way January zipped along at light speed, I'm most definitely thinking Spring will be here before we know it. You hang on too and also sending much love, Denise xoxo
DeleteYes, Happy First of February... and here's to a big improvement in the weather.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
And again to you too Jan :) I'll raise a glass to that. All the best, Denise
DeleteThat was wonderful how these guys came out to help you! It had to be freeing to get out and get some food. I am glad you are okay.
ReplyDeleteIt was! Good guys! Thank you so much for your concern Sandie, I very much appreciate that :) You're right, it was very freeing.
DeleteTe deseo una buena semana y lindas fotos. . Te mando un beso
ReplyDeleteEs un deseo maravilloso, muchas gracias :) Espero que el tuyo también esté lleno de momentos felices. Te mando un beso.
DeleteSuch a cheerful post! And a sweet man to bring you coffee, that was so thoughtful. I havent been out for a week and have no real desire to, but Larry has, and he will probably go again tomorrow. We don't need anything really, but it does him good.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice that Larry does that for you Sue, two sweet guys :) Larry sounds like Gregg. We don't need a lot either really but as you say, it's good for them to get out and about, our son is the same way.
DeleteYour two young helpers gladdened my heart. A little kindness is what the world needs.
ReplyDeleteMine too :) and agree with you 100%.
