to the two industrious young men - brothers - who turned up yesterday afternoon and asked if they could shovel our driveway. We also asked them if they could do the path up to the front door and around our mailbox and we explain about the thick ice (we stopped our mail until next week, so that our mailman wouldn't have to deal with trying to get to our mailbox and he's such a nice man, he would do that).
As soon as they left, dear other half got the car out and was able to get through the neighborhood okay, stopped off for a few groceries and brought me back a coffee. He was very glad to get out.
There is still not as much room to drive in the neighborhood, as there are big mounds of snow on each side to navigate, but navigate he did. With this storm being so widespread, many of you are probably seeing these same conditions yourselves. At least the parking lots at the stores have been cleared for the most part, and the main roads are clear.
Our weekend forecast: a very cold start with temperatures near 25-30 degrees F (-3.9°C to -1.1°C) for highs and sub-freezing, near-record lows (single digits to teens) through the weekend. The weather remains cold and mostly dry through early next week, with daytime highs gradually rising from the mid 20s to upper 30 degrees F by midweek. Woo-hoo! A heatwave!
Gregg asked if I would like to get a grilled chicken sandwich from one of our fast-food places we go to. I was happy to say yes, and I took a few photos coming back, just to show you what the roads were like.
I was happy to get out so, a big shout out to the two young men who knocked on our door. Also, a big thank you to all those hard-working people who get up in the wee hours to clear our roads. We are very grateful!
What a blessing! We have not had anyone knock at the door yet, which is unusual. It has been 3 degrees! You are both so brave to have ventured out!!

Deleteit is so nice to read positive posts about the young people of today, so many of them are really wonderful. our snowblower broke after one pass on the driveway and that was it. no one has come, but they would not even be able to get to the front door, the snow was/is solid ice and still unshoveled. we are just getting too old. a friend of chucks came and got the snowblower and drove it to the shop to get it fixed, they said it would be 2 - 3 weeks. i have not left the house in 10 days, but i am ok, i will really appreciate getting out when i can. i am so happy you had help, and a chicken sandwich. we will not last too much longer before we will have to go for food, i can't have it delivered!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Debbie and it's the reason I like to share these lovely people I come into contact with, in this case these young lads. We also hear about other acts of kindnesses from family and friends. There are a lot of good people out there and that has always given me hope. We are no longer at an age where we are able to do these heavy dig-outs or gardening clean-ups. I think this is way too much for the snowblowers as you found out. By the time you get out and about it will be such a wonderful treat. I felt that way yesterday :) Both of us can occupy ourselves very well and even when housebound are never bored but it sure was nice to take a drive finally. I hope you will be able to soon also.

It's -5 degrees here and will stay that way all day, and it's supposed to get even colder overnight tomorrow! More snow is expected.

DeleteGod bless those young men, I would love for someone to knock on my door looking for odd jobs.. yikes on the side view of that snow. we did not have wind damage or frozen pipes, it is cold cold cold and 2 more days to fret over the pipes.. not usual for us... glad you could get out and about

ReplyDeleteIt is nice to have the boy help dig you out. We were blessed our neighbor used his snow blower on our driveway. We did around the car and deck. DeleteIt's always wonderful to see young people out there trying to earn a few bucks. I was on my way home from work the one day and saw three young boys walking down the road with shovels. They were obviously out to make money too.

ReplyDeleteThank you John :) We also had lots of warnings from our son about watching out for the sudden walls of snow. He turned right and the road was just a mountain of snow. Fortunately, not going too fast but we did come across them when we did our own right-hand corner drives, in places at least.

ReplyDeleteIsn't that the truth? We have mountains of the stuff. As long as it doesn't prove to be too much of a danger, I think they are going to let nature takes its course. I don't know why I said that but it seems to make sense to me :) I just hope we don't get too much flooding :(

DeleteLots of snow. That's great Denise. When we had bad snow back in 2010 and 2018 we helped the neighbours and shovelled their snow from their house to the car so they could get to their cars easily :-D

DeleteSuch a cheerful post! And a sweet man to bring you coffee, that was so thoughtful. I havent been out for a week and have no real desire to, but Larry has, and he will probably go again tomorrow. We don't need anything really, but it does him good.
