From my archives, an old post from March 2013.
We were at the Dockside Restaurant on the Lynnhaven Inlet in Virginia Beach (Virginia) and at the back where there were tables overlooking the water, there was a marina that attracted many water birds. Besides the usual Gulls, which I always love, there were also Pelicans and Red-breasted Mergansers. (These Mergansers were a first for me. I have seen Hooded Mergansers before.) We had a great view of all the birds, and we were delighted with the show that they put on, especially the Pelican’s take off.
It would have been nice to get some sunshine for these photos, but it was a very grey day. Still, I was happy with what I could get.
Here he goes!
Lift-Off...
and away he goes!
Thanks for dropping in today and
I hope the rest of your week is a great one.

What amazing pelican photos! I am glad there is no sun. It might have ruined the perfection of your shots. Very impressive. I have never seen a real pelican.
ReplyDeleteThank you Ginny :) You have a good point there. I hope you get to see a real one, they are a wonderful sight.
DeleteBeautiful bird, they are so big yet so graceful. I sat under one and I didn't know once. Nothing happened..lol
ReplyDeleteVery true Margaret and you have some beautiful ones over your way don't you? I've seen an Australian pelican but only in pictures. Glad you did not know about your own pelican, that could have been quite a shocking surprise otherwise, lol!
DeleteHave you also seen Common Merganser, Denise? If not, you need to add that to your list. I will be leading a group of birders along the north shore of Lake Ontario on Saturday, and we should see all three species.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen a Common Merganser David and I will definitely add it to my list. I look forward to seeing your photos from your trip to the north shore :)
DeleteWhat an awesome series. There is nothing quite like watching a bird take flight.
ReplyDeleteThank you Ann :) very true!

DeleteWow, wow. And goes he does. Excellent work.
ReplyDeletePS: When I'm on the laptop (forgive me if I mentioned this already), if I'm on the laptop commenting, I have to have third party cookies on to comment as me. Not sure if that helps.
Wishing you a wonderful day!
Thanks very much Ivy :) I appreciate that. That's for the advice! I'll try that. You have a wonderful day too :)
DeleteHave a nice day!
ReplyDeleteThank you Anne, you too :)
DeletePelicans are my favorite birds, I love the because they are award and quite ugly to look at and oh so graceful in the air, we love to watch them riding the updrafts a long tall buildings. Today on our local news, the subject was pelicans. The wild life people were begging people who clean their catch at the docks provided, to put the carcass in the trash can provided and to NEVER give one to the pelicans, we have numerous pelcans dead from swallowing the carcass and the bones get stuck in their throat and they die a terrible death. they can swallow whole fish but not the carcass. the signs warn but people ignore.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info Sandra, I never would have thought of that, not that I fish.
DeleteSuch a wonderful series of this take-off. Love it! Happy Wednesday to you.
