I will be sharing only one sculpture today. A fun piece rather imaginatively called "The Mother of Dragons" and the artist who created it is Dale Lewis. From a distance you can only see the back view and although I knew this was going to be far more interesting up close, I was in awe when I was standing only a few feet away. The ‘scraposaurs’ as they are called, were all amazing to look at, but this one was a definite favorite.
We had to wait for a while as even though the garden was on the quieter side (we had arrived relatively early), there was a small crowd taking it all in. I thought perhaps it would be a while before everyone left but eventually they moved on and we were on our own.
This particular sculpture is in the form of a prehistoric Pterodactyl protecting her chicks. The mother is 11 feet in height with an 18-foot 8-inch wingspan. She is made of stainless-steel scrap. The name was inspired because of her likeness reminding the artist of a dragon protecting her chicks, and fancifully thought that the babies could grow up to be dragons.
If you look closely at the teeth, you will see they are forks.
We arrived on a dull day and thought it might rain, but we lucked out and made it back home before that happened. I can only imagine what this piece looks like when it glistens in the sun.
Dale Lewis’ website with other works of art can be found at this link, and here you can see more.
We had a fun time but did not get to see every sculpture. The humidity was high and am still not able to walk as far as I would like but pleased to say I did better than I have done. The exhibit closes on October 19th, 2025, and there will be plenty of time to come back and see the rest.
It takes about an hour-and-a-half to get here depending on traffic and is a beautiful drive. We usually stop somewhere for lunch on the way back.
I will have a few more to share when I put my next scraposaurs post together, hopefully in a day or so.
Thanks for looking and have a great day.
It does look like a good time, Denise! Thank you so much for sharing this!
ReplyDeleteThank you Linda, it really was wonderful! And you are very welcome :)
DeleteIt is awesome!!!! And birds are all descended from dinosaurs. You got great photos. I love it!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Ginny :) and appreciate your comment very much :) It is amazing that they are, isn’t it?
DeleteI love the idea of forks for teeth and the amazing mama dragon! Great photos. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean, very clever isn’t it? :) Thank you and you are very welcome.
DeleteIt is effective for sure, the teeth = forks, imagination is a great thing to have, Denise.
ReplyDeleteI couldn’t agree more Margaret :)
DeleteWow! I love scrap metal work and his are so good! The imagination artist's have to have to create from junkyard scraps has always amazed me. Even those small garden sculptures you see in garden shops made from bolts and such...well, I don't know why they fascinate me so. Also love color so the chameleon and the hippo were favorites, of course. Loved the links. Especially the one that he gave the tour of his workshop. What a retirement project, eh? He has a very kind face. Thanks for sharing!! :)
ReplyDeleteMe too and totally agree Rita :) glad you enjoyed the links too. I love garden shops, they have things in them I don’t get to see in other stores. And he got into this so late! You’re right, he does have a kind face, I saw that straight away.
DeleteGlad the big mommy didn't snatch you when you got close to those chicks. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeletePhew! Lol! :)
DeleteAn interesting exhibition and without doubt better than having the scrap wind up in the dump, although there is probably a decent market for scrap metal. I will look forward to more pictures.
ReplyDeleteThank you David and much better! aI will have to find out more about that market you mentioned. I am curious now. I will be getting another post done next week :)
DeleteThis would be a fun place to visit. This sculpture is fascinating. It amazes me how people can take a bunch of scrap and turn it into art. Clever using the forks for teeth.
