"The temple bell stops but I still hear the sound coming out of the flowers."
Matsuo Bashō was born in 1644 near Ueno in Iga Province, Japan. The Matsuo family was of samurai descent and his father was probably a musokunin, a class of landowning peasants granted certain privileges of samurai. (Musokunin means, "low-status samurai without land, low-status farmer without land.") Little is known of his childhood. The Matsuo were a major ninja family, and Bashō was trained in ninjutsu (the traditional Japanese art of stealth, camouflage and sabotage, developed in feudal times for espionage, and now practiced as a martial art.) DeleteMatsuo Basho was a very sensitive man. His expression would be very well received today in the realm of botanical science where much research is being done into plant communication.
