Ever since the reported bear sighting, I haven't been feeding the birds as requested. However, it hasn't stopped the woodpeckers from visiting. This Downy Woodpecker is perched on the top of the framework of our deck. Maybe she has been be running out of space in the tree to poke her food into, as now she is using the top of the frame! I found her rapidly beating beak into the holes she has made, and now the frame is looking a bit raggedy. Thank you little Downy!
For a while she remained undisturbed...
and continued to poke food into those holes, or maybe making bigger holes.
There she was, minding her own business, busy at task in hand...
when all of a sudden company flew in.
A Red-bellied Woodpecker, also a female, decided to pay a visit...
A slight 'argy-bargy' ensued.
For the time being the Red-bellied woodpecker had the upper hand.
Somehow, I don't think the damage to the top of the frame was caused by one woodpecker.
The little Downy looked up expectantly...
The little Downy stayed for a few minutes, then gave up and flew away.
"Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish."
I’m betting little Miss Downy pays absolutely no attention to your request! At least she (and the red-bellied) provide wonderful photo ops as they destroy your fencepost!
ReplyDeleteI think you would be correct Sallie :) Yes, I enjoyed taking their photos but now I have to figure out how to save my fence post.
DeleteIt is the cockatoos here. If they are in the mood they rip and tear to their destructive heart's content.
ReplyDeleteAnd they look so adorable! :)
DeleteQue maravilha esta sequência de fotografias, aproveito para desejar uma boa semana.

Obrigado, estou feliz que você gostou deles. Desejando-lhe uma boa semana também :)
DeleteIt's a hard life when others interrupt a birds hard graft. Still, I guess the rule What's yours is mine still applies in bird land.
ReplyDeleteIt does indeed Valerie :)

ReplyDeleteAn interesting story about woodpeckers and cool photos. The woodpecker is a useful bird. All the best:)
Thank you Lucyna :) It is very entertaining to watch them.
DeleteHello, Cute series on the Woodpeckers. The Downy woodie is so cute. I hope the bear has moved on! Wishing you a happy day and a great new week!
ReplyDeleteThank you Eileen! I am hoping our bear has found his territory miles away from here in a more wooded area with no people :) Happy day and great week to you also.
Deleteshe is really beautiful and now we have proof that not only can humans not get along, it goes for woodpeckers also... beautiful post
ReplyDeleteThank you Sandra, glad you enjoyed :) The behavior similarities between birds and humans didn't go unnoticed by me.
DeleteI love pretty Downys! And maybe he is eating something that would destroy the wood there. He may be doing you a favor! Hugs!
ReplyDeleteNever thought of that! Thank you :))) Hugs back to you too :)
DeleteI just know about woodpeckers through TV and stuff and seeing them like this gives me a more realistic view of them. :)
ReplyDeleteHi there, and welcome! I enjoyed visiting your blog and seeing your part of the world. Glad you enjoyed my woodpeckers. There are so many beautiful animals and birds from your part of the world I see only in books and nature shows. One of the reasons I enjoy blogging.
DeleteGreat story. We miss so much of what's going on in the critter world by not being patient.
ReplyDeleteThanks Red :) Many have such busy lives and it is a great pleasure for me to sit still for a while and look at the birds out back.
Deletelove your woodpecker photos
ReplyDeleteThank you Linda, so glad :)
DeleteWonderful pictures of all the fuss! Yes, we are told not to feed the birds right now because of the bears around. But then things like this happen; you can't win.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ginny, yes isn't that the truth? :)
DeleteOh dear, wood peckers just doing what comes naturally! Beautiful photos!
ReplyDeleteWren x
Thank you Wren, and they certainly do. One used to come ratatatting on the aluminum siding under our bedroom window. It was a great alarm clock :)
DeleteA lovely series of photos. We have been listening to a woodpecker in our oak tree for the last couple of days but we cannot see it!!! Enjoy your day, Diane
ReplyDeleteThank you Diane, I hope you get to see your woodpecker soon :) You enjoy your day also.
DeleteThey're very pretty!
ReplyDeleteThank you William :)
