THE SMITHSONIAN NATIONAL ART MUSEUM IN WASHINGTON DC - SON'S PHOTOS
Our son was in DC and had about a hour to use up, so he came here. He said I could share his photos when I asked. I will have more eventually, as he also went to the Air and Space Museum. Thank you son!
I have cropped explanations from larger photos, so they are a little bit fuzzy. You should be able to read them better if you enlarge each photo. There is older and more contemporary art in no particular order.

I am not familiar with those at each side of the Jackson Pollock painting, and when I tried to zoom in on their id cards, they were too blurry.

AROUND AND ABOUT FROM MONDAY 10-21-24 TO SUNDAY 10-27-24
This week's 10-day weather forecast.
Monday - 10/21/24: we drove over to the garden center and bought three pots of mums for the back deck. We also bought a planter for one (it is in the middle between the two yellow mums) and will get the others in a week or so. I chose two bright yellow mums, and one a reddish burgundy color. They are a pretty combination and I am enjoying them as I look through the patio door while I am typing this.
The deck was swept free of leaves a couple of days ago, but the trees are still full of them. I think they make everything look pretty, a glad tidings of the season. (Everyone in the neighborhood is sweeping up leaves.) We will get the broom out soon.
After doing a quick browse in the garden's gift shop, I chose something for a small fairy garden I'm planning, an impulse buy. Some call him The Green Man? Not sure if that’s right. I believe there are several names around the world. He came complete with a bird in a nest in the top of the tree, a squirrel at its base on one side, and two small mushrooms on the other. I could not resist. As I said, an impulse buy for my future fairy garden.
This has been put on the backburner for a while, but I add to it occasionally and store in a box. And the above is healthier than a chocolate brownie, but not as tasty and we won’t go down that road today. There is an interesting article about The Green Man, which I think this fellow may be. You can read it at this link.
Tuesday - 10/22/24: Gregg is on his way south to visit his brother and sister for a few days. He did the shopping yesterday and asked if there was anything special that he could get me. A couple of diamonds perhaps. No? Then I will take a small piece of salmon thank you very much. I have just baked it. Very simple and no fuss. I put it on parchment paper sprayed with avocado oil, another quick spray on the top. Sprinkle with a little salt and pepper, and garlic powder. In a reheated oven on 450 degrees F. for 15 minutes, very yummy. Even with an oven that runs on the cooler side, it was cooked perfectly. You'll have to be the judge on the timing with your own oven temperature, and of course you probably have your favorite way of cooking fish. This is my favorite fish next to grilled rainbow trout, which I have never cooked before and only had on special occasions at a restaurant. My dear's favorite is cod. I bought a packet of frozen vegetables about a month ago and felt they needed to be eaten. They went very well as a side dish. I measured out a cup-and-a-half.
- Wednesday, 10/23/24:
Our son came over for a while. He called and asked if I needed anything from the store. I was grateful as I had forgotten to put fruit on the list for my morning smoothie. He also stopped in and got me a coffee, all very welcomed, his company most of all. Son and dear daughter-in-law thoroughly enjoyed their trip to New York, and we have heard lots of wonderful stories about the people they met, and about the city itself. Son enjoys NY very much. He had to go into DC yesterday and to use up some time as he was early for a meet-up, he spent time at the National Art Gallery. I will have some photos later, ones he shared with me. Here is one of them.

MONDAY MORNING RECIPE - CABBAGE AND POTATO SOUP - APPROXIMATELY 8 SERVNGS
We are definitely going through soup weather. It's going to heat up later this week but in the meantime, it’s been chillier and I wanted to make it on such a day. It comes from a food blog called 'Simply Recipes' hosted by Stephanie A. Ganz. It looked so good I put it on our rotation and we made it a couple of days ago. You can find the original recipe at this link.
Cabbage and Potato Soup - 8 servings
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1 medium yellow onion, diced
1 medium green cabbage, chopped (about 8 cups packed)
1 lb. Yukon gold potatoes, large dice (about 4 cups)
6 cups chicken stock or vegetable stock
(If you would like to make your own stock, Stephanie's recipe can be found here.)
Salt and pepper to taste.
(Optional: Lemon juice, olive oil and fresh herbs like dill or parsley or chives.)
In a large Dutch oven over medium, heat the olive oil and add the diced onion. Cook until the onion is translucent but not brown, 1 to 2 minutes. Add the chopped cabbage and increase the heat to medium-high. Cook the cabbage and onions, stirring occasionally to soften the cabbage and develop some golden brown color, 8 to 10 minutes.
Add the potatoes, chicken stock, salt and pepper (It's okay to use a heavy hand with the salt and pepper our host said, “because you are seasoning two very neutral vegetables, and you want to bring out their subtle flavors”.
Cover and bring to a simmer. Lower heat and cook until vegetables are tender, 20 to 30 minutes.
Taste and adjust the seasonings. You can garnish with a squeeze of lemon juice and/or a few chopped herbs.
Serve immediately.
Refrigerate leftovers for up to 5 days.
This has a very smooth, easy and delicious flavor. Nothing spicy added while cooking, except for the salt and pepper.
When we sat down to eat Gregg added a little rice wine vinegar in his bowl the first night but I didn’t. I wasn’t too sure about that. The next night I was curious, so I drizzled in a couple of splashes. Much to my surprise I thought it added a nice, tasty little zing. If you want to try this I would go easy at first to make sure it is to your taste.
I added a packet of oyster mushrooms cut into large dice. These were put into the pan at the same time as the onions. I am sure any mushroom would do. We enjoyed this addition very much.
Stephanie mentions that this would be an excellent soup to give someone who is under the weather. I agree as it is a very smooth, nourishing, mild tasting soup.
She suggested adding lemon juice, herbs like dill, parsley, or chives for a garnish.
Another suggestion was a spoon of sour cream on the top.
She has had this for breakfast with a poached or fried egg.
Crusty rolls would go great but I didn’t have any and didn’t miss them.

SATURDAY MORNING AT THE BIRD FEEDER - BIG BUNNY
HAPPY SUNDAY - FOR THE LOVE OF TREES
Tree love begins when two seeds of love are planted together...how it happens...no one really knows...but once planted side by side, like two trees, their love begins to grow.
They grow so close together their limbs are always touching and anyone who sees them understands the love they share between them...as they're forever holding hands.
Individually they are independent and wonderful but together...each other they enhance...watch them in the wind...see how beautifully they dance.
Watch them weather any storm together...watch them feel each other's pain...watch them share their joy and laughter...watch them play out in the rain.
Watch if one tree teeters in the wind in a sudden summer squall...how the other tree is there to catch them...and will not let them fall.
Watch if one tree is filled with sorrow...is ever nervous or afraid...how the other tree is there with arms outstretched to offer the comfort of its shade.
Watch how there is no jealousy between them...no feelings they have to hide...if one tree is taller or more colorful than the other...there is only delight...and joy...and pride.
Watch how, no matter how old and wrinkled they become...they remain young in their hearts...and how their roots have grown so intertwined they can't be pulled apart.
The road to joy and happiness...that's an easy choice for me...yes, if I could choose one path to true love...then tree love it would be.
