Years ago we found ourselves in Victoria. We had a lovely long walk and I was fascinated by this beautiful sculpture, remembering it from our first visit ten years previously. A little research revealed that this lady is called "The Spirit of the Republic", an eight-foot statue across the street from the BC Legislative Buildings. It is a memorial honoring those Canadian Veterans who volunteered to fight in the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939. Nearby is a plaque with the title "No pasarán!", which means "They Shall Not Pass". We were there in the Autumn and that lush carpet of gold and red leaves were a perfect adornment for this beautiful statue. You can read more about her at this link.
The bronze statue reminds me of an evil queen of some sort. The wild flower bloom is gorgeous. The garden is to honour the soldiers to fight in Spanish civil war. That is very noble of Canada to fight for Spain there
ReplyDeleteThank you Roentare, glad you enjoyed and I do agree, that it was very noble :)
