"I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December
A magical thing
And sweet to remember
We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December."
1860-1935
"I Heard a Bird Sing"
Oliver Herford (December 2, 1860 to July 5th, 1935) was an Anglo-American writer, artist and illustrator. He was born in Sheffield, England to Rev. Brooke Herford and Hannah Hankinson Herford. Oliver's father, Brooke, was a Unitarian minister who moved the family to Chicago in 1876, and to Boston in 1882.
And that birds survive, and sing, in the depths of winter is a wonderful example of their resilience.

DeleteYou take the most lovely bird photos, Denise. I visited the creek hoping to see some birds, and only one sweet one came by, but flew away. And a grand bird, maybe an Eagle, up above. I like this December poem, it's delightful.
ReplyDeleteHave a bright new year!
