our trip to The Butterfly Conservatory at Niagara Falls in June 2013.
When we entered the Conservatory, we encountered more butterflies than we had ever seen in any other, and we have visited many over the last ten years or so. It was such a fun experience. You had to be very careful where you stepped because on occasion there were some resting at our feet.
There was a statue inside, of Diana, Goddess of the Hunt. Her story is at this link if curious. She had a visitor resting on her, which you can see below.
She didn't seem to mind. There was a lot of activity going on around her and in every other corner of the conservatory.
The photo above and below are of the same butterfly. It is the Tiger Mimic Queen.
The Blue Morpho is a butterfly when followed around did not stop anywhere. I was trying to get the other side of its wings, which is an incredible blue color but the only time it stopped, this is the side it showed.

Black Swallowtail. I couldn't find out much about this one. Most seem to have some sort of pattern but wasn't able to identify it exactly.
The butterfly above and below is Postman (Heliconius melpomene)
Atala - Eumaeus atala
Red Lacewing - Cethosia biblis
Rice Paper Butterfly (also known as a White Tree Nymph) Idea Luconoe

And then...
I came around the corner and found a painted turtle in a small pond.

DeleteYou got fabulous and beautiful shots! I have seen the other side of the Morpho's wings, they are like neon blue.
ReplyDeleteThank you Ginny, and you described them perfectly :)
DeleteBeautiful they are.
ReplyDeleteThank you Margaret :)

ReplyDeleteHi Ann, how wonderful! Thank you for letting me know your daughter and her friend have been to this amazing place :) I wonder if you could share some of her pictures sometime? I would love to see them.

DeleteHello Denise,
ReplyDeleteBeautiful butterflies, I love the statue and the turtle. Take care, enjoy your day!
Thank you Eileen, as I love old statues I am always drawn to them, the modern art ones also. I try to get into the mind of the sculptor to make sense of them and appreciate them through the artist's eyes, though my favorites are always these classics.
Deletethe blue morpho looks like the red admirals in our yard that come and sit on me when i stand still. I did follow the link and the blue is gorgeous. Have never seen a butterfly that had different underside from top side. awesome pics
ReplyDeleteThank you and how wonderful that you get them visiting you Sandra :) I remember being very surprised when I realized that many butterflies are 'two-sided'. Adds to their beauty somehow.
DeleteWonderful photos
ReplyDeleteThank you Christine :)
DeleteOh my! These are awesome.
ReplyDeleteThey certainly were, thanks Linda :)
DeleteI love butterflies but I have to say that the little turtle caught my attention today!
ReplyDeleteYes, a little darling for sure :) I took to him too Latane.

ReplyDeleteAgree totally :)
DeleteWow...such a great variety of beauties!! I had to embiggen the swallowtail...seems to be missing its right "tail"?!!
ReplyDeleteSeveral of the butterfly wings were a bit tattered, including the one you mentioned. They just kept fluttering along, a good message in that. Thanks Anni :)
DeleteJust gorgeous! Amazing colors! I like to think of the social butterflies of the world.
ReplyDeleteThank you Gigi, I thought they were too. I wonder who coined the social butterfly phrase. It is a great way to describe a person :)
DeleteJust looked it up :) The explanation is here:
