ON THE WAY TO SKYLINE DRIVE

Last month we decided to point our car in the direction of Skyline Drive, and these bucolic rural scenes were on the way.

There was also a lot of farmland.

According to a website I found at this link:

There are 43,225 farms in Virginia.

The typical Virginia farmer is 58.5 years old.

The average farm size is 181 acres.

Farms cover 7.8 million acres.

Approximately 36 percent of Virginia's primary farm operators are female.

Less than 15 cents of every consumer dollar spent on food actually goes to the farmer.

The website sources are from the 2017 USDA Census of Agriculture, 2016 survey data from National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) and the Economic Reserarch Service (ERS).

"Agriculture is the most healthful, most useful and most noble employment of man.

~George Washington~

"We have neglected the truth, that a good farmer is a craftsman of the highest order, a kind of artist."

~Wendell Berry~

I am once again thanking and remembering our farmers.

  1. The amount of money that the farmers receive is horrifying. I suspect that the same is true here. Which is sad and bad.

  3. Yes no farmers no food. They have a hard job and are very much reliant on the weather. Lovely photographs of the farmland

  4. It's sad the farmers do the work and profit so little. Love seeing the silhouetted silos.

  5. Beautiful farm land. That is unbelievably sad how little a farmer gets for his hard work.

  9. the photos are so peaceful and beautiful. I dread the fact that farms are falling by the wayside these days. and am so sorry they have to struggle to grow our badly needed food. My cousins here are all farmers, but not for local produce, they sell tomatoes to Huntey and Potatoes to the chip people, they are helping feed the USA and around the road. it is a struggle because of drought and heat and climate changes. not as profitable as it was for their dad, grand and great grands

    1. Hi Sandra and thank you :) Thank you cousins for me too. The weather plays a major part in their lives, that's for sure and we owe them so much. There will never be enough thank you's for all they do to keep food on our tables.

  15. We watch a television programme called Countryfile. It gives a lot of information about the life of farmers in different UK regions. Farming life all over the world has been and continues to be hard work in an effort to produce food. We're very grateful to the farming communities especially in their efforts to keep up with all the government regulations that are needed in these challenging time. We try to remember this when we enjoy our drives in the countryside. Beautiful photos and quotes that are very true Denise.
