I got up early this morning. It is 4.45 a.m. and there is a fine blanket of snow everywhere. Thankfully it seems to have stopped. From what I have heard on the weather reports it isn't going to be more than an inch deep around here.

BIRDS AND SNOW - AN OLD POST 10 YEARS AGO
Yesterday I was more interested in how icy it was going to get as when I went to collect the mail at around 6.30 p.m., it was sleeting and everything was covered in ice, especially our driveway which is on a hill and can be very treacherous in bad weather. I thought it prudent to go down to the mailbox at a 45 degree angle on the grass, and even that had a fine sheet of ice on it but it was better than the alternative. I got back up without too much difficulty and only felt myself sliding a couple of times.
An hour later it had started to snow and was still snowing when I went to bed at 11.00 p.m. This morning all is quiet. I will be filling up the bird feeders first thing and throwing out the peanuts. In the top photos we start off with an American Robin and a Carolina Wren. Below is a Dark-Eyed Junco. The photos of all feathered friends were taken during the last dusting of snow a couple of weeks ago. Below is a male Cardinal. I love his bright red coloring against the white of the snow.
The Blue Jay was taken the following day when the snow had stopped and the sun was out. It is always a race between the Blue Jays and the Squirrels to get hold of the peanuts.
Added note to this old post on February 20th, 2021. While we are not going out anywhere I will be sharing several old posts. This one was dated January 12th, 2011 before hubby had retired and was traveling out of state on business.

Thank you so for taking the time to leave a comment. I enjoy reading them very much and always try to return a visit. As I do monitor comments it may take a while for them to appear, even quite late depending on what is going on and how much time I am able to spend on the computer.
I appreciate all who look at my blog, but I won't be publishing any businesses. If you are only able to publish anonymously, would you sign your name please, and leave an addy so I can return your visit where possible? Thank you!
My favorite is the cute little Wren. Wrens are maybe my favorite bird. Are Robins in your area all year round? They come here in the spring, and a few are already here! It is too early, and snow is on the ground. What were they thnking?
ReplyDeleteThanks Ginny :) Wren’s are sweet little birds and have a mighty song. We don’t usually see Robins until the Spring.

ReplyDeleteAll the photos and birds are beautiful. I like the tiny Robin the most. Have a nice day:)
Thank you Lucyna, and you have a nice day also :)
DeleteThey are all so pretty and so adorable. I love the bright cardinal in the snow too. I have tiny little baby blue jays and baby cardinals here already this year!
ReplyDeleteThank you Martha, how lovely! Spring will be here before we know it :)
Deletethat peanut seems so huge in the jays mouth; now that we don't have an outdoor cat we have a lot more birds, and we are really enjoying watching them; we have a bird seed feeder and a suet feeder, even have doves coming especially during the cold snaps
ReplyDeleteHi Linda, I know. It also always amazed me when this one chipmunk used to stuff several peanuts into its cheeks and carry off with them, and then come back for more.
Deletebirds and snow are a great combination - lovely photos!
ReplyDeleteThank you Carol :)
DeleteSince we don't have blue Jays this far south, it's always a special treat when bloggers like you share!
ReplyDeleteI woulda left the mailing the box. Lol
So glad you enjoyed them Anni. Yes, 11 years ago I didn't think about it but now I would have second thoughts and said nuh-uh, and have indeed done so on occasion, lol!
DeleteBeautiful bird photos!
ReplyDeleteThank you Christine :)
DeleteYour bird photos are darling, Denise. I love seeing them in the snow. The blue jays are really something aren't they? They can outsmart the squirrels any day.
ReplyDeleteThank you Martha Ellen, me too. They certainly are characters and so feisty, probably why they make me laugh :)
DeleteA wonderful old post. Great photos of the birds! That Carolina Wren is so sweet!
ReplyDeleteThank you Ellen, I love those Wrens also :)
DeleteI remember how my mother would put out some peanuts on a platform outside one of the second floor windows. Squirrels and blue jays would come pretty quick.
ReplyDeleteThey certainly know where the food is :) Bless your mother for doing that. Thank you for that memory William :)
Deletebeautiful bird pictures. those blue jays are aggressive birds. I have seen them put cats in the wind if they came close to their nest. It's going to be 64 degrees I saw on the news here tomorrow. Probably will have one more big snow though before it's over.
ReplyDeleteHi Betsy, yes they are very feisty birds, and very protective of their young. I think these are the ones that also dive at people aren't they? I think you're right :)
