I saw this pretty bird on a trip to Monterey, California, several years ago, in the summer of 2008. I found these photos again while looking through my folders.
He is a California Scrub Jay. There is information about this bird here.
You can find them in open habitats, oak woodlands and chaparral along the West Coast, as well as in backyards, pastures and orchards. Typically, though not always, in lower and drier habits than the Steller Jay.
This was the first and last time I have seen this bird. Hopefully, one of these days, we will be heading back to California on a road trip. It is good to plan!
He is handsome. I have heard of them, but have never seen one. They do not live anywhere near here.
ReplyDeleteHi Ginny, sorry to say they don't. I have added a map to my post with their range. Thanks for asking :)
DeleteThank you.
ReplyDeleteI am always grateful when you share birds that we do not have and I will not see.

Thank you John :) We will get back there one day. I agree, striking is a good description of this beautiful bird. You and your loved ones stay safe too.
DeleteThey are highly entertaining birds! They reside in my garden and I love to watch them. They even had a nest in our cherry laurel one year and I enjoyed watching the little ones grow and eventually leaving the nest. They're quite intelligent I think.
ReplyDeleteHello Carola, and how wonderful that must be to see this pretty bird so regularly in your garden, and to see their babies grow. I would absolutely love that experience. Thank you for sharing that :)
DeleteThis is so cool! We’ve never seen one in all our trips to California to visit Art’s sister. Someday.... when we can travel again, I shall have to keep my eyes open for one.
ReplyDeleteThat's great Kay, I hope it won't be too long before you can visit Art's sister. I am looking forward to going out west again so that I can do the same :)
DeleteHandsome looking one.
ReplyDeleteHe surely is :) Thank you Margaret!
DeleteYou photograph the most beautiful birds.
ReplyDeleteThank you Gigi, they always seem to be very photogenic on the occasions when they stop long enough for me to press the shutter and button :)
