Once in a golden hour
I cast to earth a seed.
Up there came a flower
The people said, a weed.
To and fro they went
Thro' my garden bower,
And muttering discontent
Cursed me and my flower.
Then it grew so tall
It wore a crown of light,
But thieves from o'er the wall
Stole the seed by night.
Sow'd it far and wide
By every town and tower,
Till all the people cried,
'Splendid is the flower!'
Read my little fable;
He that runs may read.
Most can raise the flowers now,
For all have got the seed.
And some are pretty enough,
And some are poor indeed,
And now again the people
Call it but a weed.
The Flower by Alfred Lord Tennyson
I love the poem, I have not heard it before. And also your beautiful flower photos! I recognize spider flowers(Cleome)and cone flowers. My favorites are the deep, rich red flower with the bee on it. And the blue flower with the bumble bee.
ReplyDeleteHappy you like them Ginny. I am trying to ID the others I don’t recognize but it is slow going. I see similar but not quite the same. Happy Sunday to you.
DeleteBeautiful. As weeds so often are.
ReplyDeletethank you EC, weeds are only wildflowers as they say :)
DeleteBeautiful shots!

DeleteI've always liked this poem, Denise. Thanks for airing it again. I also love weeds, those in my garden are not unwanted or unloved because they bring joy to the heart.
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful poem isn't it Valerie? You are very welcome and I'm very happy you welcome them into your garden. Joy indeed :)

DeleteI have never heard this poem and I LOVE IT!!! truly love it... I read it out loud to myself. that purple flower with the bee is amazing. I am a lover of weeds
ReplyDeleteThank you Sandra, so glad. I love those weeds too.
DeleteTennyson describes the characteristics and beauty of flowers. But he also brings up a question : what is a weed?
ReplyDeleteWhat is a weed? A weed is a wildflower in my book. Not welcome if you are a gardener with a green thumb? I don't think dandelions are very welcome in a manicured garden, but how lovely they look spread across an open field, out in the country somewhere.
Deletei love the flowers, a beautiful verse as well!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Debbie.
