This video is quite a long one - 9 minutes and 45 seconds - but when I realized we were going to be seeing the Changing of the Guard, I kept the video going. If you have difficulty seeing it below, the YouTube address is at this link.
I also must add that there will be those of you who don't have a solid connection. I know Diane at My Life in Charente 2 hasn't been able to watch any of the videos for that reason. So sorry Diane but I will be sharing photos in the near future.
Our New Zealand guest is now on the next leg of his journey. Bill, when you read this, Gregg and I can honestly say we miss you. You were a wonderful house guest/friend/family member, and we look forward to the time when we can meet up again.
Isn't it sad how many of our cultures have to have a Tomb for Unknown Soldiers...
ReplyDeleteI agree EC, it is very sad.
DeleteThanks for sharing and I would also say you are the perfect hosts!
ReplyDeleteI can see it! How often do they do this?
ReplyDeleteI found the following for you Ginny.
Delete"The Guard is changed every thirty minutes during the summer (April 1 to Sep 30) and every hour during the winter (Oct 1 to Mar 31). During the hours the cemetery is closed, the guard is changed every 2 hours. The Tomb is guarded, and has been guarded, every minute of every day since 1937."
Such an awesome thing. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThank you Pam. Glad you enjoyed it.
DeleteWhat a wonderful thing for your guest to see! I would love to be there for it.

DeleteHello, I have seen this before on TV. I am glad you and your cousin had a nice visit. Maybe next time you will visit him in New Zealand. Happy Monday, enjoy your day and new week ahead.
ReplyDeleteThank you Eileen. Who knows, maybe :) Happy day to you and also for the week ahead.
DeleteI don't think I could hold my camera still that long, in fact I know I could not..
ReplyDeleteI surprised myself Sandra, it is the longest video I have ever taken.
DeleteHello Denise!:) I enjoyed the dignified precision of the changing of the quards. I hope Bob has a safe journey home.:)
ReplyDeleteThank you Breathtaking, I will pass your wishes on. The Sentinels are very well coordinated, very impressive.
DeleteSadly this post is beyond me as you have already realised, I look forward to seeing your photos when you post them. Diane
ReplyDeleteI will try and do a post soon Diane :)
DeleteI watched with a lump in my throat. It is so sobering and moving! I have seen it in person but it has been a LONG time ago! Thank you so much for sharing it!
ReplyDeleteI did the same Marie, it is a very moving ceremony.
DeleteSome of the ritual to it is similar to how it's done at our Tomb at the War Memorial as well.
ReplyDeleteI would be interested to see this done in Ottawa.
DeleteI'll record it sometime. They switch out every hour.
DeleteI look forward to it.
DeleteSo impressive. Yes, it is 'sad' that there are so many tombs like this around the world - but perhaps they give people pause for thought.
ReplyDeleteI sincerely hope so Mike.
DeleteThat's a nice thing to say about a house guest you hadn't met before. Glad your time together was good.
ReplyDeleteThank you Ellen and justly deserved. Bill was great!
