BIRDS AT HUNTLEY MEADOWS

Great Egret


When we visited Huntley Meadows last Tuesday, we had a lot of fun looking at the Great Egrets and the Great Blue Herons.  We even spotted a Green Heron that day.  This is the first one I have seen in all the times we have visited.  But perhaps that's because we didn't know where to look, or went at the wrong time of the day.  We were a little earlier on this visit.

    Fantastic and amazing flight captures, Denise! The only birds I have ever caught in flight with my camera (before I lost it a couple of years ago) were seagulls. Thank you so much for sharing, I love this series!

    Wonderful wonderful pictures! I love the flying reflection! Your flight shots are marvelous. The Great's body looks perfectly straight in flight. I also love the one from the rear, his feet almost touching the water. It shows off his yellow feet! SO many various poses.

    Hello Denise!:) These are all wonderful images. The Green Heron, and the inflight shots of the Great Blue Heron, and close up portraits are
    fab u lous!! The Egrets in flight are so streamlined, they almost look like arrows shooting across the landscape. Have a great Weekend!:)

    My pod images were still in my camera, I had a look at them last night, and although similar to the ones you shared, I don't think they are the same, but I'll try to post them next week.

    I didn't know there was a green heron. I see herons fly over my garden but they no longer drop in. Once upon a time, when the pond was healthily maintained, the herons would come to catch newts. If there was weed on the pond they would drag it out and shred it to find the baby newts. Interesting to watch.

    Wonderful shots! We do get blue and green herons here. If there are egrets in this area, they stay out of urban areas entirely. It'll be time soon for them all to be heading south though.

    Hi Denise, what a super post, the Great Egret is called a Great White Egret over in England, great images, they are not an easy bird to photograph. The Green Heron is such a beauty but your images of the Blue Heron with the reflections in the water are brilliant. Regards John

    Love the GB Heron flight images and the close-up profiles. Your egret with the reflections are fabulous, and the 'hidden' green heron shot is awesome Denise.

    Hi Denise, I couldn't find an e-mail for you so will reply to your comment on my blog here. Yes, hiking poles are wonderful. Mine are very old but the ones they make now are easily collapsable and also have shock absorption built in. They are very helpful in balance situations. Go to a reliable sporting goods store and have them show you the different types of poles.
