"Who wants my jellyfish?
I'm not sellyfish!"
Somewhere between Destin and Perry (Florida in January 2014), a distance of 215 miles, I saw it floating in low tide at one of the many beaches we visited. I was focused on a sandpiper fishing nearby, but I was glad I took a couple of photos of this interesting creature.
I found some fascinating facts about jellyfish online. The link I originally used is no longer working, but I am grateful for the interesting information it gave me.
Did you know....
...some jellyfish are bigger than a human and others are as small as a pinhead?
...people in some countries eat jellyfish?
...that jellyfish have been on Earth for millions of years, even before dinosaurs?
...jellyfish have no brains but some kinds have eyes?
...jellyfish are mainly made up of water and protein?
...a group of jellyfish is called a smack?

The only one I knew was that they have no brain. Yet they can think enough to sting people! Your photo is both interesting and creepy.

DeleteI always find jellyfish interesting; I sometimes find them washed up on my beach. When I was a child, we used to pick them up and throw them to each other, and everyone would scream "Ew!"... haha!!!

ReplyDeleteWhen we lived by the ocean I used to see them often, but that’s been many years ago now :) Being stung by one is very painful and I am fortunate not to have had that experience :)
Deletethe photos are the best ever seen by my eyes of a jellyfish. if you meet one in the water they don't act as beautiful as they look. this info is amazing. of course now I have "no brain" ha ha ha

DeleteWhen I was a kid in California I would see them washed up on the shore. That's all I remember of them. You did get some really good photos.

DeleteI remember seeing them in an exhibit at one of the aquariums we went to years ago and thought them absolutely beautiful to look at. Fascinating creatures but happy to stay away from them.

ReplyDeleteHere in the UK we had more jellyfish visit our coastlines in the summer of 2025 than usual ... they think it was because of our very hot summer weather.
I wouldn't like to eat one, and I don't like octopus either!
When I was in Spain, a few years back now, I had paella which had octopus in the ingredients ... I did try some, but not had any since.

You are very welcome Jan :) and thank you for your interesting comment about them in your extra hot summer. I only ate octopus one time. A Spanish friend cooked paella for lunch. It wasn’t to my taste but I don’t like too many things from the sea. Some fish and shrimp and lobster yes but I don’t like clams or oysters or any of the shellfish. I just don’t like the texture.
