We made our way to Pea Island one of the days, and I sat in the shade overlooking the parking lot. I could see everyone coming and going. My niece is in the center of the photo below, her partner and his daughter are standing on the right.
What I learned at this website was that the Visitor Center is on the north end of Hatteras Island on Highway NC 12. There are restrooms and a walkway to the beach, with informational trailheads for those who enjoy nature walks. The visitor center is definitely worth a visit as you will see the different animals and birds you can expect to see in each season. I didn't go inside this time but remember it being very worthwhile. Parking is free!
"The best time to see birds at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge (North Carolina), is during spring and fall migration, particularly in the early morning. While birding is good year-round, these seasons offer the greatest variety of species and the most exciting birding opportunities."
“Migration (September-November): thousands of waterfowl, shorebirds and land birds gather, especially after strong cold fronts, making for excellent birding, this according to the Fish and Wildlife Service.”
Summer: while birding is still good, temporary closures around seabird nesting colonies might occur.
Winter: Pea Island is a wintering ground for many migratory waterfowl, including tundra swans, snow geese and various ducks.
Time of Day: the early morning is generally the best time as many species are most active and vocal at dawn.
Specific areas within Pea Island:
North Pond: a popular spot for observing various waterfowl and shorebirds, especially in fall and winter.
Salt Flats: provides viewing opportunities of birds in the Salt Flats area and North Pond.
Outer Banks: considered a premier spot for wintering migratory waterfowl along the Atlantic Flyway, according to The Outer Banks of North Carolina."
There are other links with information about the area here and here and here. Hopefully I haven't repeated any as my brain was a bit foggy at the time of putting this together. If I have, I will correct later.
The plant below growing in the sandy soil is called Cutleaf evening primrose, especially beneficial to native bees and it is native to the U.S. You can see better photos at the link.
Next is called American searocket, also native to the U.S.
I am grateful for all the information given by these websites. If you click on the links you can read more.
That's all for now.
I hope you have enjoyed it.
Thanks for visiting and
I wish you a great day.
Hello Denise, it looks like a great time and I love your smiles at the end of it all. Thank you so much for sharing your journey. Your illustration at the end of your post is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHello Linda, thank you so much and you are very welcome. It's fun to share :) Thank you for mentioning my little doo-dad at the end. It's a hobby of mind to create these things and I enjoy doing them. If ever you would like one just let me know. It is easy to put one together.
DeleteThanks for sharing—great tips on birdwatching seasons and the Visitor Center. Loved the note about the Cutleaf evening primrose helping native bees!
ReplyDeleteYou are very welcome Roentare and I am always happy when I see any benefits to our native bees. They need all the help they can get :)
DeleteInteresting place then. The photos are lovely. Good to see.
ReplyDeleteThank you Margaret, it is very interesting :)
DeleteThose smiles say it all. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThank you sue, we certainly did have a marvelous time :)
DeleteLovely place to visit, particularly if you enjoy watching birds. The large leaf pennywort is so pretty.
ReplyDeleteThe pennywort is a pretty one I agree :) I didn't get to see many birds this day, except for way off in the distance.
DeleteBuen obaservatorio para las aves y las plantas. Algunas han crecido en los más insospechados lugares.
ReplyDeleteFeliz fin de semana.
Muchas gracias por tu amable comentario. Te deseo a ti también un excelente fin de semana.
DeleteMy tears are dripping. A visit to Pea Island and not a single picture of a bird! You should be placed in the stocks for a day!
ReplyDeleteOh no, not the stocks!!!! ;) To save your dripping tears, I promise to go through my family's photos when I get them and add them to this post. Promise!!! And thank you for the chuckle David. Unfortunately, I am still effectively hobbled for climbing over sand dunes to get photos of birds, but it seemed very quiet that day unless you were able to hike aways.
DeleteAnother interesting place that you visited. Love all the photos and especially the one of you and your husband.
ReplyDeleteThank you Ann, that's very kind of you to say :)
DeleteSuch a great place for birders! The picture of you and your niece is very beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the lovely compliment Angie. Very much appreciated :)
DeleteLooks like a great outing, Denise, even if a bit chilly but at least the sun was shining unlike in NH.
ReplyDeleteIt really was and definitely welcomed having our coats on, but gorgeous sunshine. I hope you get some up in NH soon :)
DeleteHello Denise,
ReplyDeletePea Island was one of my favorite places to visit in the Outer Banks.
Great photos of you and your family. Take care, have a great day and a happy weekend.
I can see why Eileen, it's an incredible place! Thank you very much and I wish you the same :)
DeleteWe have been to Pea Island :). Nice family pictures.
ReplyDeleteThank you Linda and how wonderful that you know the place :)
DeleteI love the Pennywort! I haven't been to SC other than perhaps passing through when heading to FL 50 years ago. Looks like a wonderful place to explore.
ReplyDeleteHi Val, thank you, I rather liked that Pennywort myself :) I hope you get to see this area one day but know what you mean about passing through places. We've done that a lot over the years and not seen as much around us, always being on a time schedule to get to places.
DeleteEnjoyed the photos of you with hubby and your niece. I'll be seeing one of my nieces on Tuesday. Happy Mother's Day weekend to you!
ReplyDeleteThank you Ellen and how lovely you will be seeing your nieces soon. Happy Mother's Day to you also :)
DeleteYou all look very happy! Thank you for the information.
ReplyDeleteThank you Sandra and you are very welcome. We truly were very happy, such a special time to be together again :)
DeleteAnother wonderful outing! I do love seeing all those smiles. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Rita, sweet of you to say :)
DeleteDenise you really and truly showed your family so many fantastic places. Did they request the places or did you and Gregg make the itinerary
ReplyDeleteHugs cecilia
Thank you Cecilia but we had Gregg's sister and her husband to thank for this outing as they opened up their home to all of us and took us to quite a few places during the short time we were there. There were a few places my family requested but after Gregg asked his sister if it would be okay, we just made it so as we knew they would enjoy the area. There were a few things they wanted to do and we did our best to accommodate those requests. It was fun doing them :)
DeleteA wonderful trip. Great photos :-D
ReplyDeleteThank you Ananka, very much appreciated :)
DeleteAnother lovely day! You are wonderful hosts.
ReplyDeleteThank you Christine and I would add my s-in-law and b-in-law as they were our hosts for three days and showed us such a wonderful time while we stayed with them :)
DeleteBardzo lubię takie rodzinne wycieczki. Widać, że dobrze się bawiliście. Miłego weekendu:)
ReplyDeleteDziękuję bardzo, to była cudowna podróż z rodziną.
DeleteI have never heard of Pea Island. So interesting. I have also never been to Hatteras - which I am pretty sure puts me in the minority for those of us from Virginia/North Carolina. Glad you enjoyed your visit!! Hope you have a wonderful weekend ahead. Happy Mother's Day to you!
ReplyDeleteHello Jennifer, the only reason we found out about the place was because Gregg's sister and husband moved there a few years' back. They have introduced us to a lot of great places since then. Thank you, you have a wonderful weekend and Happy Mother's Day also :)
DeleteThis looks like a great spot for your visit. I've never been to Sea Island or that part of the coast so it's like a little holiday for me, too!
ReplyDeleteHi Jeanie, I'm really happy you think so. Thank you my friend :)
DeleteLooks a lovely trip and I enjoyed seeing your photographs ... that's a very nice one of you and Gregg.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your weekend.
All the best Jan
You are so kind Jan, thank you ever so much :) You enjoy your weekend also.
DeleteA nice and peaceful place to spend time with your family, Denise. This is a wonderful picture of you and your niece, and these pictures are a reminder of your special time together. The largeleaf pennywort is sure an interesting plant. You took some lovely pictures of that.
ReplyDeleteHappy Mother's Day to you, dear friend.
~Sheri
Hello Sheri, it certainly was and I appreciate your sweet words. I agree, the pennywort is an interesting plant. Thank you and Happy Mother’s Day to you too dear friend :)
DeleteParecen que disfrutaron su viaje. Te mando un beso
ReplyDeleteMuchas gracias :) Me alegra decir que sí. Les mando un beso
DeletePea Island looks like a very special place to visit with your niece and family. Lovely photo of you and Gregg.
ReplyDeleteKind of you to say Beverley, thank you so much. Everyone enjoyed their time there :)
DeleteI love that they grow in the sand and I really, really love that rest rooms are along the walk. That's super helpful. It's always nice when I go to a new area like a walking park and there are bathrooms.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree! First place I find out about :)
Delete:-)
