One last photo of the sunrise taken by family. This one I didn't share in my other post but I think you will enjoy it. I am not sure which one of our family photographers took it.
One day we visited the Wright Brothers National Memorial, link here.
I parked myself on a bench while family enjoyed looking around and I took photos of dogs. They occupied my time beautifully (I have been to this memorial many times over the years. We lived three hours away for quite a long time and we took all our visitors). Though I didn't do much while here this time, these beautiful pups kept me happy.
I had quite a few people chatting to me as I sat there. One person I met was a very nice lady who had her adorable four-legged friend with her, and he was very curious about me (not in these photos). She was concerned and tried to gently pull him away, but I assured her he was no bother at all and that I was enjoying him. True!
Showing a little relief she told me how happy she was that this was such a dog-friendly state. She was visiting from Pennsylvania and she had met many nice people who welcomed her pup. I was happy to hear that. We saw a lot of dogs on our travels, and there were many at the memorial.
Gregg later joined me and showed me this photo, a likeness of the Wright brothers...
but these were about all we took between the two of us. We knew a family album would be up online sometime, and I will be able to share more later.Another place we visited, not on the same day as the memorial, was a town called Duck (maps below with names in white, corresponding to the area where these places are located).
A timeline of its history can be found at this link. It is a charming little town and has a long boardwalk overlooking the Currituck Sound. After pointing the family in the right direction, Gregg and I found yet another place to enjoy, right next to Duck's Cottage Coffee and Books, which I remembered from our many visits previously. They have seats on the side of the building next to a small pond. It's a pleasant, fun little shop that also sells pastries, muffins, biscotti and others. Traditional coffee is served but you can also choose house lattes with names like Nutty Duck, Mucky Duck and Swan Other, with customer favorites of the Purple Martin, Ruddy Duck, Peep in a Cup and the CocoDuck. I only just found this out at their website and thought the names an absolute hoot.
We were spotted...
and dear sweetie was also, as our dueling photos show.
Below is the water tower which is a well known sight. Its original tower was built in 1963 and was demolished in 2020. That one was a 200,000-gallon steel water tower. A new, larger 400,000-gallon water tower, (160 feet high) was constructed in its place and began serving the community in June 2020.
And there you go, that's more information that I've learned about any other water tower ever, says I with a smile! I can highly recommend browsing around Duck if you are ever in the area. The day is getting short, I have a few things to do around here, so I will finish my latest post. More coming!
Thanks for visiting and
I hope your day is a great one.
The first photo is wonderful, and especially with the bird almost right in the center. wjat did you buy at the Coffee & Books place? Looks like it was wonderful weather!
ReplyDeleteThank you Ginny :) The weather was coolish but for the most part we had sunny skies the whole time they were here. Gregg popped in and bought me a coffee, a plain latte, and didn’t notice the names on the menu board.
DeleteI am thoroughly enjoyiing these holiday posts - keep them coming.
ReplyDeleteAwww thank you Sue, much appreciated. More soon :)
DeleteLooks like a fun time with your family. I love the cute dogs and the beautiful sunrise.
ReplyDeleteTake care, enjoy your day!
It was a lot of fun Eileen, thank you :)
DeleteGood to see these photos of the area. Nice sunrise, pretty colours.
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed Margaret thank you :)
DeleteImagine the look on the Wright Brothers faces if they could see aeroplanes today?
ReplyDeleteIf only we could David :)
DeleteWhat a lovely day you had. Thanks for taking us along. This looks like a place I would enjoy visiting. Love the names for those coffee drinks.
ReplyDeleteThank you Ann, and you are very welcome :) weren’t they fun names?
DeleteWhat a lovely trip so far.
ReplyDeleteThanks Christine, it was lovely! :)
DeleteHave a nice day!
ReplyDeleteThank you Anne, you also :)
DeleteWe have stayed in the Duck area at least two times and Nags Head a couple other times. We enjoy the boardwalk in Duck. We have been to the Wrights Brother memorial a few times. Lot of walking there! As an aside, our friends with whom we share a large beach house in the OBX forego that trip this year, opting for an Alaska land/cruise tour instead.
ReplyDeleteWell, the cruise sounds very nice but I would rather be on terra firma here on in. I am sure they will have a lovely time :) I am glad you’ve enjoyed this area. I shall be happy to go again in the Fall or whenever a good time is to see the migrating birds.
DeleteYou had lovely weather, by the look of it - bright and cool?
ReplyDeleteThank you Janice and it was exactly as you describe :)
DeleteHi there. Glad to see you back here. I like that photo of you and Gregg. And those names are a hoot, especially Peep in a Cup. Haha.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the nice welcome back Gigi :) I am still chuckling about those names.
DeleteDear Denise :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful sunrise capture and those dogs were a great distraction whilst you waited on the bench and the lady seemed nice,Those coffee names are fun too. It's so interesting to see where you took your family.
Thank you Sonjia, I am happy you found my post interesting :)
DeleteDenise, how nice that there are benches for you to spend some time while the adventureous in the family explore. Are you schedule to have knee replacement?
ReplyDeleteThank you Marcia, I thought so too :) I am trying to hold off on knee surgery. I am due to go back to the doctor soon so will know more then. Right now I am having awful hip pain on the other side, overcompensation I suppose. I know arthritis is a factor.
DeleteGreat photos - I do love the ducks and would enjoy sitting and watching for for a while.
ReplyDeleteThanks Carol, truthfully I could have sat there all day :)
DeleteThis whole area looks lovely and welcoming. I used to live in Atlanta and have been to South Carolina but that's as far as I went.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Sandra, I felt the same way :) South Carolina is a beautiful state too.
DeleteDenise you took your family to so many of our favorite places. WOW and the weather was most agreeable
ReplyDeleteHugs and thanks for sharing
Cecilia
We tried our best and there were still a few places we didn’t get around to, but as we all said, “Next time.” :) You are very welcome. Thank you my friend and sending hugs.
DeleteThat first photograph is just wonderful.
ReplyDeleteAnother great post and read, thank you.
All the best Jan
Thank you so much Jan, makes me happy that you enjoyed them. I thought so too about that first photo and couldn’t get enough of those sunrises :)
DeleteAll the best to you too.
Me enamore del perrito. Te mando un beso.
ReplyDeleteMuchas gracias. Yo también lo hice :) Te mando un beso.
DeleteI'm happy for you that there are many nice benches and chairs for you to sit and enjoy the scenery while your loved ones trek around. Cute photo of the two of you on the bench.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ellen, sweet of you to say. And they certainly do take care of people at these places.
DeleteWonderful photos. I always like seeing happy dogs :-D
ReplyDeleteMe too Ananka and there were many happy dogs that day :)
DeleteThis looks like such a lovely area and a great day too. Looks like you had terrific weather! That always helps.
ReplyDeleteWe had lots of sunny weather but in NC it was a tad chilly. It certainly didn't spoil the fun though. When we got back home up here the weather warmed up a bit and we sat on the deck every night. It was wonderful! :)
DeleteLove the shot of the pups! All of the shots were fun to look through.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ivy, I appreciate that :)
