CHILDREN LEARN WHAT THEY LIVE

If children live with...
criticism, they learn to condemn
hostility, they learn to fight
ridicule, they learn to be shy
shame, they learn to feel guilty
tolerance, they learn to be patient
encouragement, they learn to be confident
praise, they learn to appreciate
fairness, they learn justice
security, they learn to have faith
approval, they learn to like themselves
acceptance and friendship,
they learn to find love in the world.

Let's teach our kids love and acceptance for one another, no matter what our differences, starting from the day they are born.  Teach them love for one another, which should include love of self. It is not our weakness, it is our strength.

Children are our most precious commodity, they are our hope for a better world.

MY FENCE POST THIS WEEK FOR GOSIA'S FENCES AROUND THE WORLD

An old favorite photo of a mother sowing the seed early.  Mum was taking photos of her children surrounded by nature and they were all looking through the fence.
I was resting on one of the benches, waiting for a bird to visit a branch I had seen them visit earlier.  It was enjoyable watching the family across the lake.  They were looking through the fence at the koi and several turtles below, a heartwarming scene as I listened to their excited voices.  The fence sealed the deal for today's post.  Thank you for hosting Gosia!

If you would like to see other fences around the world, or join in with your own, you will find them here.

Thank you for visiting everyone and have a great day!

CHILDREN'S GARDEN AT GREEN SPRING GARDENS

I know of at least two gardens where they have set aside a children's area, Meadowlark and here.  There must be more of course but I haven't as yet been to those.  I enjoy them for their whimsical, charmingly decorative features.
You can see a very large chalkboard, well used.  Even someone I know decided to sign someone's name.  I smiled when that someone pointed it out.
There are gardening classes and camps for children to attend here

"This is the real secret of life - to be completely engaged with what you are doing in the here and now.  And instead of calling it work, realize it is play."
~Alan W. Watts~
"For a small child there is no division between playing and learning; between the things he or she does 'just for fun' and things that are 'educational.'  The child learns while living and any part of living that is enjoyable is also play."
~Penelope Leach~
"Play gives children a chance to practice what they are learning."
~Mr. Rogers~
I will finish with a poem I found recently.  Unfortunately there was no author's name.  I will keep searching.

"I tried to teach my child with books,
He gave me only puzzled looks.
I tried to teach my child with words,
They passed by him often unheard.
Despairingly, I turned aside,
'How shall I teach this child,' I cried?
Into my hands he put the key,
'Come,' he said, 'play with me."
~Anonymous~

Have a great weekend everyone, and thank you so much for stopping by.

You are a marvel....

"You are a marvel.  You are unique.  In all the years that have passed, there has never been another child like you.  Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers, the way you move.  You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven.  You have the capacity for anything."

~Henry David Thoreau~

A PARENT'S PRAYER

(A photo I have shared before.  I thought these sweet children would be a perfect fit for the Parents Prayer below.)

"Help me give my children the best...
not of trappings or toys, but of myself, cherishing them on good days and bad days, theirs and mine.

Teach me to accept them for who they are, not for what they do;

To listen to what they say, if only so they will listen to me.

To encourage their goals, not mine,
and please, let me laugh with them and be silly.

Let me give them a home where respect is the cornerstone, integrity the foundation, and there is enough happiness to raise the roof.

May I give them the courage to be true to themselves, the independence to take good care of themselves, and the faith to believe in a power much greater than their own.

See that I discipline my children without demeaning them, demand good manners without forgetting my own, and let them know they have limitless love no matter what they do.

Let me feed them properly, clothe them adequately and have enough to give them a small allowance, not for the work they do but for the pleasure they bring.

And let me be moderate in all things, so that the joy of getting will help them discover the joy of giving.

See that their responsibilities are real, but not burdensome, that my expectations are high but not overwhelming, and that my thanks and praise are thoughtful, and given when they are due.

Help me teach them that excellence is its own reward and not the glory it brings.

But when it comes...and it will...let me revel in each honor, however small, without once pretending that it's mine.  My children are glories enough.

Above all let me ground these children so well, that I can dare to let them go."

(If you would like to see where I got this photo from, it is amongst all the posts from the Scottish Festival in Virginia.  We attended the festival in September 2009, and to see all the posts I shared of that day, you can click on this link.  Long time blogging friends may remember them, but will hopefully enjoy them again.  It was an amazing day spent with good friends.)

FOR CHILDREN EVERYWHERE

Today's photos were taken in the children's area of Green Spring Gardens.

Children are like flowers
Water them with love
Nourish them with praise
Give them a compliment
Each and every day
Be their sun
When all you see is rain
Protect them from storms
And shelter their pain
Children are like flowers
That blossom every day
Little pieces of us
And everything we say

~Angela Charles~

"While we try to teach our children all about life,
our children teach us what life is all about."

"... and she loved
a little boy very, very much
even more than she
loved herself."

~Shel Silverstein~

"See you later Alligator
After a while Crocodile
Bye bye Butterfly
Be sweet Parakeet
Give a hug Ladybug
See ya soon Raccoon
Out the door Dinosaur
Take care Polar Bear
So long King Kong
Blow a kiss Goldfish
Toodleloo Kangaroo"

"My wish for you is,
to splash in muddy puddles, to run through green fields, to feel the sun on your skin, to make special friends, to find the end of the rainbow, to sleep under the stars, to spread your wings and fly like a bird."

"Embrace the unique way your child is blooming, even if it is not in the garden you imagined."

"Every child is a different kind of flower, and altogether make this world a beautiful garden."

"You are amazing, remember that!"

"Bless those who see life through another window, and those who understand their views."

"Always believe that something wonderful is going to happen."

HUNTLEY MEADOWS - Tuesday, August 23rd, 2016

Huntley Meadows is another place we enjoy.  My Sister-in-law was visiting and we took her there.  I think she brought us great luck, as we saw more bird life than we have ever seen at one time, particularly Great Blue Herons.  There were several in the area, and I spotted this one in a tree across the marsh.  As there was a very pretty blue sky for a backdrop, I chose my photos for SkyWatch Friday.

Five more photos so that I can join in with Willy-Nilly Friday Five.

1) A Blue Dasher Dragonfly.  He was very cooperative waiting for me to line up a shot.

2)  Hubby and his sister enjoying the Egret in the distance.

3) Little nature lover.  Start them early.  She was with her grandmother.  We enjoyed the little girl's fascination with the young Great Blue Heron.  This is Gregg's photo.

4) I was very curious what this is.  It starts to grow over the marshy plants at this time of the year and I have learned that it is a parasitic plant called Dodder. You can read about it here.  It would be worth scrolling down as there are other very interesting parasitic plants mentioned, all very interesting, and this is the eighth one down.

5) A change from the above, a tea light in a pretty blue glass container after stopping at a restaurant on the way home.  If one used one's imagination a little, one could almost see that this was a setting sun symbolic of the lovely day we had, that was almost at an end but not quite over.
