THE OLD CAR

The memories of an old life,
That has taken hold,
Alas it is but an old car,
But some things are still gold.

MORE SNOW

At the end of Monday's recipe post here, I made an addition along with those extra recipes at the end, where I mentioned that it had started snowing again.
It was the kind of snow that,  just like last time, covered all the trees making them look picture postcard perfect.  It was really beautiful but...
there's a spring out there somewhere.

A LOVELY POEM

Looking Back
by Edgar A. Guest
1881 to 1959

I might have been rich if I'd wanted the gold
Instead of the friendships I've made.
I might have had fame if I'd sought for renown
In the hours when I purposely played.
Now I'm standing today on the far side of life,
And I'm just looking backward to see
What I've done with the years and the days that were mine,
And all that has happened to me.

I haven't built much of a fortune to leave
To those who shall carry my name,
And nothing I've done shall entitle me now
To a place on the tablets of fame.
But I've loved the great sky and its spaces of blue;

I've lived with the birds and the trees; I've turned from the splendor of silver and gold
To share in such pleasures as these.
I've given my time to the children who came;
Together we've romped and we've played,
And I wouldn't exchange the glad hours spent
With them for the money that I might have made.

I chose to be known and to be loved by the few,
And was deaf to the plaudits of men;
And I'd make the same choice should the chance
Come to me to live my life over again.
I've lived with my friends and
I've shared in their joys,
Known sorrow with all of its tears;

I have harvested much from my acres of life,
Though some say I've squandered my years.
For much that is fine has been mine to enjoy,
And I think I have lived to my best,
And I have no regret, as I'm nearing the end,
For the gold that I might have possessed

Edgar A. Guest was born in Birmingham, England, brought to America when he was ten years old, and died in Detroit, Michigan, at the age of 77.  You can read about him here.

SNOW POST AND QUOTE

"It snowed last year too. I made a snowman and my brother knocked it down.  I knocked my brother down and then we had tea."

SUMMER ROSES

On a cold, chilly evening I was looking at some photos of roses.  I thought I would share them for my next post.

"Oh dear!  Is Summer over?"
I  heard a rosebud moan,
When first her eyes she opened
And found she was alone.
"Oh, why did Summer leave me,
Little me, belated?
Where are the other roses?
I think they might have waited."
Soon the little rosebud
Saw to her surprise
Other rosebuds opening,
So she dried her eyes.
Then I heard her laughing
Gaily in the sun,
"I thought Summer was over.
Why it's just begun."

OLD FAVORITE - PART 4

When I Am Among the Trees
by
Mary Oliver

When I am among the trees,
especially the willows and the honey locust,
equally the beech, the oaks and the pines,
they give off such hints of gladness.
I would almost say that they save me, and daily.

I am so distant from the hope of myself,
in which I have goodness, and discernment,
and never hurry through the world
but walk slowly, and bow often.

Around me the trees stir in their leaves
and call out, "Stay awhile."
The light flows from their branches.

And they call again, "It's simple," they say,
"and you too have come
into the world to do this, to go easy, to be filled
with light, and to shine."

OLD FAVORITES - PART 3

"If ever should you need me
Just take a walk outside,
And cast your thoughts upon the winds
And watch the Cardinals fly."

GO OUT...

Go out, go out I beg you
And taste the beauty of the wild.
Behold the miracle of the earth
With all the wonder of a child.

DENISE'S FIVE DAYS OF QUOTES - PART 5

"I meant to do my work today
but a brown bird sang in the apple tree...
And a butterfly flitted across the field...
And all the leaves were calling me."

A DOG POST TODAY

This is one of those posts I found in my draft folder. We found these lovely dogs in Williamsburg, Virginia, a few years ago.

Two young ladies in colonial costumes were very taken with this lovely dog, as was the little girl.

A Welsh Terrier enjoying a walk .

Liberty Dog - a cardboard cutout - was welcoming skaters to the ice-skating rink in the middle of the town (it was in the winter when we visited).

This young dog's ears were standing at attention, but he seemed happy and content.

There were many more dogs enjoying a walk with their human companions.  It was a lovely day for walking.

I will leave you with one quote I found from Ogden Nash.  It made me smile.

"A door is what a dog is perpetually on the wrong side of."

AN OLD GATE

I could happily lean on a gate all the livelong day, chatting to passers-by about the wind and the rain.  I do a lot of gate-leaning while I am supposed to be gardening; instead of hoeing, I lean on the gate, stare at the vegetable beds and ponder.

I have my own memory of an old gate in front of our home, and from the ages of five to fifteen, I spent many a time swinging on it, leaning on it, climbing up it (to a child it seemed like Mt. Everest) and watching the world go by.  This is not that gate I am sharing today, but an old photo I took on our last trip to England.

ANOTHER FAVORITE....

Another repeat from the old blog, definitely one of my favorites.  He's a beauty and was focused on catching up with his humans.

Thank you everyone who has left a comment.  It is taking me much longer to read and publish than usual.  Life is a bit busy again and I will answer all as soon as I can.

A story from my sister-in-law.  She was chatting to a neighbor this morning, of how much she liked lemons and had just planted a small tree.  A little while later she found several in a bag, waiting for her on the doorstep.  What a sweet neighbor.

When we were living near Long Beach in California, back in our navy days, the house we rented had a huge lemon tree in the back garden, with the most enormous lemons.  I had never seen one like it, loaded with them on every branch.  The scent was intoxicating.  I had only ever bought lemons in the supermarket.  How I wish I had that lemon tree now, but then we had better move to warmer climes.

THERE WAS THIS LOVELY DOG.....

From the archives

I was just browsing through my old blog and found this lovely dog.  We found him with a club of some sort, people who had other dogs just like him.  We were in Niagara Falls a few years ago, taking a break at an outside eating area, when they all turned up.  I had a lovely time observing these beauties.  They were all very well behaved, gentle as were their owners who obviously loved them very much.  It looked like they were on an outing, all young dogs still being trained perhaps.  Their humans were taking photos of them too.

If you would like to see more photos of those lovely dogs, you can click on this link.  It will take you to the page where I originally posted this one.

Also, there is a website with the loveliest photos of three very cute dogs, done by a professional photographer.  Worth a visit I can assure you.  You can see those here
