HUMMINGBIRD CLEARWING MOTH

On Sunday we went to a park we haven't been to before. It is called Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens in Washington DC.  Considering it was so hot yesterday, there were a lot of people walking around.  I will post more from the garden later, but I wanted to share the first hummingbird moth I had seen in ages.

We hadn't gone far before Gregg said he thought
he had sighted a hummingbird. It wasn't but it was a hummingbird moth.  It would have been lovely to see the bird of course, but I was delighted with this little beauty.

I found a great website here, where you can read more information.
Our little friend is a Hummingbird Clearwing, Hemaris thysbe (Fabricius, 1775) in the family Sphingidae.
I will show you more photos of the garden very soon.

  1. Oh my GOSH!! How on earth did you get such fabulous and clear photos? This is amazing to me. I have never seen or heard of him. He has stripes, fringe on his tail, green fur, and clear wings. We see quite a few hummingbird photos, but this is something much more rare and unusual. The last photo, it looks like he is hovering in the air completely still to pose for you!!! I am totally stunned.

  3. What I know about nature could be written on the back of a postage stamp and I have never heard of a hummingbird moth. But what a beauty. And your photos are fabulous!

  10. seeing this clearwing moth brought back memories of our years in Virginia. We had butterfly bushes in the front yard and these were frequent visitors. I can remember my amazement at the first time I saw one. Thanks for the memory reminder, Denise.

    1. That's interesting, the first time I ever saw one it was on a butterfly bush. I remember being amazed too. You are very welcome for the memory it evoked Dorothy. Happy traveling!

  11. Hi Denise,
Not a moth I have ever seen or heard of.
Wonderful set of images of this beautiful moth.
Do you get Hummingbirds in your area, I have read of people putting out feeders in Canada for them.
    All the best, John

    1. Hi John, glad you enjoyed him. We do get the occasional hummingbird but I have never put out feeders as I never know when their migration occurs. I should find out I know. All the best to you too my friend.
