THE GREAT BLUE HERON AND THE RED-WING BLACKBIRD

Two of my favorite birds at Meadowlark Gardens and here they were together.  I don't always get to see them.  The Red-wing Blackbird is the first song that I recognize, and when I hear its trill, I know I will get a sighting but not always a guarantee of a photo.

I was very happy to see them both on our visit to the garden at the beginning of June.  In fact they were in such close proximity of each other,  I got the two of them in the same frame.  This never happens and I felt very fortunate.
A small moment in time in the grand scheme of things. I had a very enjoyable moment or two taking photos, and then I just observed.
Those bright red lapels are very striking don't you think?
The heron was momentarily distracted, but he soon returned his focus on his fishing at the end of the pond.
I thanked the blackbird for this beautiful display.
I thanked them both.
Getting the perpetual stare from the heron, he moved his feathers...
and joined his mate in a tree nearby...
and I joined my mate who was waiting on a bench not too far from this tree, enjoying his own observations.

  2. What a treat, such splendid photos! Being a birdwatcher, I am enchanted. The heron closeups are wonderful! But the way you have captured the blackbird in all his beauty is amazing! The colors, the feathers, just perfect! Deep and intense. And what luck to catch them both together!

  4. I think I have reported in the past about the two herons that stole my fish and proceeded to eat them on my lawn. Still love them, though.

Thanks for your tips and hints, Denise. You might like my final sentence!!

  8. I like that idea. Sometimes you just have to put your camera down and enjoy the moment.

  9. There is a pond in my neighbourhood and once I had a heron perched on my backyard fence, flew off before I could get a photo.

  10. I have seen both of these species, Denise, when we lived in VA. From our apt view I've seen a great blue heron flying over the Nashua River but no red singed blackbirds from that view.
